Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Celebration at Braintree, Mass: July 4, 1876 An American in a foreign land, speaking of his own country, would naturally dwell upon its national aspects, its history as a whole, its marvellous resources, extended domain, considering those masculine traits that suggest and reveal force, renown, and results. Upon American soil the same individual will turn with warmer and tenderer emotions to the "spot of his origin," and will be drawn by ties of affection to his home, to the town of his nativity, regarding all that concerns it with minute and special interest. With such filial regard and affection let us recite, on this glorious anniversary, the story of the birth and growth of our venerable mother town. Tracing back this interesting narrative for two hundred and thirty-six years, we shall find, "A thousand fantasies Begin to throng into our memory, Of calling shapes, and beckoning shadows dire, And airy tongues, that syllable men's names On sands, and stones, and desert wilderness." Book Illustrated Programme of the Centennial Celebration in New York April 1889

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Illustrated Programme of the Centennial Celebration in New York, April, 1889: 1789, 1889 How the Centennial Anniversary of the Inauguration of President Washington Will Be Celebrated - Throngs of Visitors from Every State in the Union Will Crowd the Streets - The Harbor Resplendent With Men-of-War and Merchant Marine Rich with Bunting - Military Organizations and Industrial Exhibits in Two Monster Processions - The Magnificent Decorations Which Will Span the Streets Along the Line of March - Arrangements for the Reception of President Harrison as on the Day when Washington Arrived - The Ball at the Metropolitan Opera-House and the Big Banquet - A Valuable Art Exhibit of Old Historic Paintings - The Men Who Have Arranged the Programmes. A programme for the approaching Centennial Celebration of the Inauguration of George Washington was first put forward early in February of 1888, or something more than fourteen months ago. It was a very modest affair compared with the official programme which was finally adopted and printed about ten days ago. It suggested in the first place that the celebration be confined if possible to one day, that is to say, April 30, 1889, pointing out. however, that it might be necessary to have the naval parade in the harbor on the afternoon of the day before. The naval parade, according to this original plan, would be participated in by vessels belonging to the United States and foreign countries, such as France. England, and Germany, which would (still according to the programme) be especially interested in the event. The accent was probably contemplated to fall on England in making this statement. In addition to the naval parade it was proposed to have a grand military parade in which military organizations from the different cities, as well as from New York State and New York City, should be invited to lake part. Other suggestions were as follows: The different trades should also be invited to take part in the parade. Some formal exercises should take place on the steps of the Sub-Treasury, where Washington was inaugurated, and also in St. Paul's Church, where Washington attended service on the date of his inauguration. Possibly in addition some further literary exercises should be held at the Metropolitan Opera-House, including, among other things, an oration and a poem. After the literary exercises were over and the parade had taken place it would be a good idea to have a banquet in the evening which the President of the United Slates and other guests invited should attend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Celebration, July 2, 3, 4, 1916, Commemorative of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Granting of the First Charter, April 17th, 1816, to the Village of Peekskill House were held Councils of War, at which plans were perfected affecting not only the defences of the Highlands and West Point, but campaigns against New York and in the South. Arnold met Washington at the Bird sall House, renewed his request for West Point and received the commis sion, departing the next day to his command. I will not recite the whole story of the treason. It was a Peekskill boy, John Paulding, who had just os caped from the military prison in New York, who with two other West chester men, Williams and Van Wart, effected the capture of Andre near Dobbs Erry. There are few incidents connected with Arnold's treason and its failure which seem to indicate a special Providence watching over the liberties of America and frustrating the ingenuity, skill and machinations of its enemies.
