Book Women and the Decade of Commemorations

Download or read book Women and the Decade of Commemorations written by Oona Frawley and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When women are erased from history, what are we left with? Between 1912 and 1922, Ireland experienced sweeping social and political change, including the Easter Rising, World War I, the Irish Civil War, the fight for Irish women's suffrage, the founding of the Abbey Theatre, and the passage of the Home Rule Bill. In preparation for the centennial of this epic decade, the Irish government formed a group of experts to oversee the ways in which the country would remember this monumental time. Unfortunately, the group was formed with no attempt at gender balance. Women and the Decade of Commemorations, edited by Oona Frawley, highlights not only the responsibilities of Irish women, past and present, but it also privileges women's scholarship in an attempt to redress what has been a long-standing imbalance. For example, contributors note the role of the Waking the Feminists movement, which was ignited when, in 2016, the Abbey Theater released its male-dominated centenary program. They also discuss the importance of addressing missing history and curating memory to correct the historical record when it comes to remembering revolution. Together, the essays in Women and the Decade of Commemorations consider the impact of women's unseen, unsung work, which has been critically important in shaping Ireland, a country that continues to struggle with honoring the full role of women today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If historical culture is the specific and particular ways that a society engages with its past, this book aims to situate the professional practice of public history, now emerging across the world, within that framework. It links the increasingly varied practices of memory and history-making such as genealogy, podcasting, re-enactment, family histories, memoir writing, film-making and facebook histories with the work that professional historians do, both in and out of the academy. Making Histories asks questions about the role of the expert and notions of authority within a landscape that is increasingly concerned with connection to the past and authenticity. The book is divided into four parts: 1. Resistance, Rights, Authority 2. Memory, Memorialization, Commemoration 3. Performance, Transmission, Reception 4. Family, Private, Self The four sections outline major themes emerging in public history across the world in the 21st century which are all underpinned by the impact of new media on historical practice and our central argument for the volume which advocates a more capacious definition of what constitutes ‘public history‘.

Book ON THE WAY TO OUR DREAM

Download or read book ON THE WAY TO OUR DREAM written by SUN Yanlin and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is to help readers to accurately understand the rich connotation of the Chinese Dream and to clarify the role of each Chinese in achieving the dreams at different stages and in different positions. It aims to provide readers with a better understanding of the contemporary China and its past, and the opportunities it offers, emphasizing the “China opportunity theory” rather than the “China threat theory”. The work systematically explores the historical and cultural development of the Chinese Dream, presenting it as a logical conclusion. The study and promotion of the Chinese Dream is not a political issue. The Chinese Dream encompasses various aspects, including culture, economy, science and technology, military, and politics. It is also a dream shared by people all over the world. It is not a means to sacrifice the interests of other countries, but a global dream that promotes openness, peaceful coexistence, mutual benefit, and win-win cooperation with all countries around the world. The realization of the Chinese Dream is examined from the perspectives of industrial economics, strategic studies, theories of enterprises, and organizational behavior. People from all walks of life in China have their own missions to fulfill their own dreams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once assumed to be a driver or even cause of conflict, commemoration during Ireland's Decade of Centenaries came to occupy a central place in peacebuilding efforts. The inclusive and cross-communal reorientation of commemoration, particularly of the First World War, has been widely heralded as signifying new forms of reconciliation and a greater "maturity" in relationships between Ireland and the UK and between Unionists and Nationalists in Northern Ireland. In this study, Jonathan Evershed interrogates the particular and implicitly political claims about the nature of history, memory, and commemoration that define and sustain these assertions, and explores some of the hidden and countervailing transcripts that underwrite and disrupt them. Drawing on two years of ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Belfast, Evershed explores Ulster Loyalist commemoration of the Battle of the Somme, its conflicted politics, and its confrontation with official commemorative discourse and practice during the Decade of Centenaries. He investigates how and why the myriad social, political, cultural, and economic changes that have defined postconflict Northern Ireland have been experienced by Loyalists as a culture war, and how commemoration is the means by which they confront and challenge the perceived erosion of their identity. He reveals the ways in which this brings Loyalists into conflict not only with the politics of Irish Nationalism, but with the "peacebuilding" state and, crucially, with each other. He demonstrates how commemoration works to reproduce the intracommunal conflicts that it claims to have overcome and interrogates its nuanced (and perhaps counterintuitive) function in conflict transformation.
