This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Census of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1905, Vol. 3: Prepared Under the Direction of the Chief of the Bureau of Statistics of Labor; Manufactures and Trade There are three features of this, the third volume of the series present ing the results of the Decennial Census of the Commonwealth for 1905, which distinguish it in a marked degree from the corresponding volume of the Census of 1895 giving statistics of Manufactures, namely (1) the inclusion of statistics of Trade as distinct from Manufactures, a new requirement of the Census law of 1901; (2) the exclusion of hand trades and neighborhood industries, so called; and the manner in which the results of this Census have been tabulated for presentation in print. Pursuant to the provisions of the Census law of 1904 requiring a Census of Trade to be taken in addition to the customary Census of Manu factures, a schedule was sent to every individual, firm, or corporation en gaged in mercantile business in the Commonwealth during the year Before this schedule was prepared, a special agent of the Bureau visited leading mercantile houses in order to ascertain what line of information would be of most value to merchants and dealers of all classes, and also to ascertain whether the b0oks were kept in such a manner that the facts desired could be obtained. The schedule was approved in December, 1901, by the Governor and Council, and work on the collection of the statistics was begun early in January, 1905. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its settlement in 1630, Boston, its harbor, and outlying regions have witnessed a monumental transformation at the hands of humans and by nature. Remaking Boston chronicles many of the events that altered the physical landscape of Boston, while also offering multidisciplinary perspectives on the environmental history of one of America's oldest and largest metropolitan areas. Situated on an isthmus, and blessed with a natural deepwater harbor and ocean access, Boston became an important early trade hub with Europe and the world. As its population and economy grew, developers extended the city's shoreline into the surrounding tidal mudflats to create more useable land. Further expansion of the city was achieved through the annexation of surrounding communities, and the burgeoning population and economy spread to outlying areas. The interconnection of city and suburb opened the floodgates to increased commerce, services and workforces, while also leaving a wake of roads, rails, bridges, buildings, deforestation, and pollution. Profiling this ever-changing environment, the contributors tackle a variety of topics, including: the glacial formation of the region; physical characteristics and composition of the land and harbor; dredging, sea walling, flattening, and landfill operations in the reshaping of the Shawmut Peninsula; the longstanding controversy over the link between landfills and shoaling in shipping channels; population movements between the city and suburbs and their environmental implications; interdependence of the city and its suburbs; preservation and reclamation of the Charles River; suburban deforestation and later reforestation as byproducts of changing land use; the planned outlay of parks and parkways; and historic climate changes and the human and biological adaptations to them.

Book The Triumph of Ethnic Progressivism

Download or read book The Triumph of Ethnic Progressivism written by James J. CONNOLLY and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progressivism, James Connolly shows us, was a language and style of political action available to a wide range of individuals and groups. A diverse array of political and civic figures used it to present themselves as leaders of a communal response to the growing power of illicit interests and to the problems of urban-industrial life. In showing that the several reform visions that arose in Boston included not only the progressivism of the city's business leaders but also a series of ethnic progressivisms, Connolly offers a new approach to urban public life in the early twentieth century.

  • Author : Gerald Gamm
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press

Download or read book Urban Exodus written by Gerald Gamm and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2001-03-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the country, white ethnics have fled cities for suburbs. But many have stayed in their old neighborhoods. When the busing crisis erupted in Boston in the 1970s, Catholics were in the forefront of resistance. Jews, 70,000 of whom had lived in Roxbury and Dorchester in the early 1950s, were invisible during the crisis. They were silent because they departed the city more quickly and more thoroughly than Boston's Catholics. Only scattered Jews remained in Dorchester and Roxbury by the mid-1970s. In telling the story of why the Jews left and the Catholics stayed, Gerald Gamm places neighborhood institutions--churches, synagogues, community centers, schools--at its center. He challenges the long-held assumption that bankers and real estate agents were responsible for the rapid Jewish exodus. Rather, according to Gamm, basic institutional rules explain the strength of Catholic attachments to neighborhood and the weakness of Jewish attachments. Because they are rooted, territorially defined, and hierarchical, parishes have frustrated the urban exodus of Catholic families. And because their survival was predicated on their portability and autonomy, Jewish institutions exacerbated the Jewish exodus. Gamm shows that the dramatic transformation of urban neighborhoods began not in the 1950s or 1960s, but in the 1920s. Not since Anthony Lukas's Common Ground has there been a book that so brilliantly explores not just Boston's dilemma but the roots of the American urban crisis.

Book The Third Electoral System 1853 1892

Download or read book The Third Electoral System 1853 1892 written by Paul Kleppner and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This analysis of the contours and social bases of mass voting behavior in the United States over the course of the third electoral era, from 1853 to 1892, provides a deep and rich understanding of the ways in which ethnoreligious values shaped party combat in the late nineteenth century. It was this uniquely American mode of "political confessionals" that underlay the distinctive characteristics of the era's electoral universe. In its exploration of the the political roles of native and immigrant ethnic and religious groups, this study bridges the gap between political and social history. The detailed analysis of ethnoreligious experiences, values, and beliefs is integrated into an explanation of the relationship between group political subcultures and partisan preferences which wil be of interest to political sociologists, political scientists, and also political and social historians. Unlike other works of this genre, this book is not confined to a single description of the voting patterns of a single state, or of a series of states in one geographic region, but cuts across states and regions, while remaining sensitive to the enormously significant ways in which political and historical context conditioned mass political behavior. The author accomplishes this remarkable fusion by weaving the small patterns evident in detailed case studies into a larger overview of the electoral system. The result is a unified conceptual framework that can be used to understand both American political behavior duing an important era and the general preconditions of social-group political consciousness. Challenging in major ways the liberal-rational assumptions that have dominated political history, the book provides the foundation for a synthesis of party tactics, organizational practices, public rhetoric, and elite and mass behaviors.
