Book excerpt: Urban ethnic groups frequently are confronted by residential segregation, discrimination, xenophobia, and conflict. However, ethnic diversity has also enriched the urban scene with a variety of languages, religions, businesses, and cultural activities. In this volume, distinguished scholars present analyses of ethnic population change in twelve urban areas: Chicago, Los Angeles, Sydney/Melbourne, Paris, London, Amsterdam, the Ruhr conurbation, Vienna, Milan, Madrid, Johannesburg/Durban, and Singapore. EthniCity reveals fundamental commonalities in ethnic community dynamics as well as significant differences from place to place. It will be important for scholars and students of human geography, sociology, anthropology, and history.

Download or read book Singapore written by Jason Lim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 9 August 2015, Singapore celebrated its 50th year of national independence, a milestone for the nation as it has overcome major economic, social, cultural and political challenges in a short period of time. Whilst this was a celebratory event to acknowledge the role of the People’s Action Party (PAP) government, it was also marked by national remembrance as founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew died in March 2015. This book critically reflects on Singapore’s 50 years of independence. Contributors interrogate a selected range of topics on Singapore’s history, culture and society – including the constitution, education, religion and race – and thereby facilitate a better understanding of its shared national past. Central to this book is an examination of how Singaporeans have learnt to adapt and change through PAP government policies since independence in 1965. All chapters begin their histories from that point in time and each contribution focuses either on an area that has been neglected in Singapore’s modern history or offer new perspectives on the past. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, it presents an independent and critical take on Singapore’s post-1965 history. A valuable assessment to students and researchers alike, Singapore: Negotiating State and Society, 1965-2015 is of interest to specialists in Southeast Asian history and politics.

Download or read book The Politics of Nation Building and Citizenship in Singapore written by Michael Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since independence in 1965 Singapore has strengthened its own national identity through a conscious process of nation-building and promoting the active role of the citizen within society. Singapore is a state that has firmly rejected welfarism but whose political leaders have maintained that collective values, instead of those of autonomous individuals, are essential to its very survival. The book begins by examining basic concepts of citizenship, nationality and the state in the context of Singapore's arrival at independence. The theme of nation-building is explored and how the creation of a national identity, through building new institutions, has been a central feature of political and social life in Singapore. Of great importance has been education, and a system of multilingual education that is part of a broader government strategy of multiculturalism and multiracialism; both have served the purpose of building a new national identity. Other areas covered by the authors include family planning, housing policy, the creation of parapolitical structures and the imporatnce of shared `Asian values' amongst Singapore's citizens.
