Download or read book Abortion in India written by Leela Visaria and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India was a pioneer in legalizing induced abortion, or Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) in 1971. Yet, after three decades, morbidity and mortality due to unsafe abortion remain a serious problem. There is little public debate on the issue despite several national campaigns on safe motherhood. Instead, discussion on abortion has mainly centred around declining sex ratio, sex-selective abortion, and the proliferation of abortion clinics in urban areas. Adding to the problem is that abortion continues to be a sensitive, private matter, often with ethical/moral/religious connotations that sets it apart from other reproductive health-seeking behaviour. This book fills a gap in our understanding of the ground realities with respect to induced abortion in India to create an evidence-based body of knowledge. Using both quantitative and qualitative research methods, the case studies show why and under what circumstances women seek abortion and the quality of services available to them. They also explore inter-generational differences in attitudes and practices, the perceptions and selection of providers, female-selective abortion, and informal abortion practitioners. Among other issues, the contributors show that strong preference for sons, availability of modern techniques for diagnostic tests, widespread acceptance of the small family norm, and heavy reliance on female sterilisation as the primary method of contraception lead women to abort unwanted pregnancies. A book that goes beyond the smokescreen of data and regulations to unravel the human story behind elective abortion, it will be of interest to those studying health, public policy, and gender, apart from the general reader.
Download or read book Environmental Concerns and Sustainable Development written by Sakarama Somayaji and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of this 21st century, environmental concerns have received utmost attention from all segments of human society. The extreme abuse of nature and ruthless hunt for material happiness are the reasons for post-enlightenment destruction of the environment. Many consider the issues related to environmental degradation as an †̃environmental crisis'. During the last century, humans have been exploiting nature not merely for need but also for greed. Environmentally-concerned individuals call for immediate action to stop being greedy and act positively. In India too this environmental awareness is fast spreading and the Honourable Supreme Court of India has directed the Central and state governments to introduce courses regarding environmental issues at all levels of education. This book is a compilation of research results pertaining to development, environment, and sustainable development in the form of articles.

Download or read book Gujarat Kutch India M7 7 Earthquake of January 26 2001 and Napa M5 2 Earthquake of September 3 2000 written by John M. Eidinger and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Earthquake Investigation Committee of the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph describes the performance of lifelines in two earthquakes: the Gujarat earthquake of January 26, 2001, and the Napa earthquake of September 3, 2000. The Gujarat earthquake severely struck the Kutch District of the Gujarat State, India, and resulted in about 17,000 fatalities, 150,000 injuries, and left more than 500,000 homeless. The most heavily damaged lifelines were water and electric power. Other lifelines were substantially affected included communications, wastewater, ports, railways, highways, roads, and bridges. The Napa Earthquake was a moderate-sized earthquake in California. Recorded peak ground accelerations were as high as 0.49g, with a recorded peak ground velocity of 15 inches per second. This report presents the findings for the following lifelines: water, telephone, highways, railroads, ports, hospitals, airports, fire department response, radio communications, highway bridges, electric, and natural gas.
