Although Kitchener shares so much of the character of the region today, its past was considerably different. Until 1916, Kitchener was Berlin, “Canada’s German capital.” Over two-thirds of the residents were of German origin; many retained strong traces of that past. These became controversial when Canada fought two wars against Germany. By the middle of the First World War, the idea of “a patch of Germany” in the heart of southern Ontario became untenable. Berlin became Kitchener, but not without a battle which split the small city. This is the first scholarly history of Kitchener. Based on wide-ranging research, it illustrates how a community so unlike its neighbours became a part of the broader Canadian community in the twentieth century. Much of the information is new, and many myths are punctured. The romantic mists which have surrounded the story of the early Mennonite settlers are lifted. The full story of the great controversies of the First World War is told for the first time. The impact of the Depression and the extraordinary economic boom which accompanied the Second World War are analyzed. Kitchener’s sometimes-eccentric politicians are seen, not as deviations, but as representatives of a long tradition of civic populism. Over 100 photographs accompany the text. Maps and tables further illuminate Kitchener’s development. Kitchener: An Illustrated History will be of interest, not only to its residents, but also to Canadians generally who are interested in the history of multiculturalism and the transition from rural to urban Canada. This book illustrates the difficulties as well as the rewards of maintaining distinct cultural traditions. The problems it identifies concern many Canadians today.

At its core old Toronto consists of walkable neighborhoods and a financial district deeply connected to the global economy. Newer parts of the region have downtown centers linked by networks of arterial roads and expressways, employment districts with most of the region's jobs, and ethnically diverse suburbs where English is a minority language. About half the population is foreign-born—the highest proportion in the developed world. In many ways this is a story of successive governments, ambitious politicians, diligent bureaucrats, and endless library reports straddling the decades. Their aim appears to have been making even better a system that, despite weaknesses, was clearly the best in Canada. Three distinctive trends emerged in Ontario librarianship after the 1930s: first, a growing sense of professionalism in librarianship; second, an enhanced sense of belonging to a pan-Canadian library movement that in 1946 would result in the formation of the Canadian Library Association; and third, a heightened awareness of the competing demands of high culture and popular culture. Public libraries became an important vehicle for promoting community, albeit with competing visions of “space and place,” as Canada generally and Ontario specifically experienced post-World War II immigration and the baby boom. As libraries approached the 21st century, the concerns of digital formats and the all-encompassing Internet intertwined to alter the book-centric "bricks and mortar" world of libraries. Nonetheless, public libraries were well placed to survive this new threat, just as they had with the challenges of radio, television, and telecommunication challenges in the 20th century.

Book excerpt: For the last 50 years, development patterns in Canada have emphasized building out onto greenfield lands at the urban edge at a rate that has outstripped the rate of population growth. This development pattern has resulted in the loss of farmland and natural areas, rising car dependency and traffic congestion. Moreover, many municipalities lack the resources to pay for the infrastructure needed to support expansion into greenfield areas. One of the ways municipalities have sought to address these issues is through residential intensification, i.e., encouraging housing development in existing urban areas where infrastructure and transit services are already in place. Infill development, adaptive reuse, brownfield development, lot splitting and secondary suites are examples of intensification that can result in the following: Ÿ Reduce infrastructure costs; Ÿ Use land more efficiently; Ÿ Preserve rural and natural areas outside existing urban boundaries; Ÿ Revitalize urban areas in decline; and Ÿ Create more transportation choice through easier access to daily destinations like work, shopping and entertainment (e.g., mixed-use, pedestrian- and transit-oriented neighbourhoods). Despite the considerable potential benefits, intensification faces a series of practical challenges: Ÿ Higher development costs; Ÿ Neighbourhood opposition; Ÿ Regulatory issues. This study aims to profile successful examples of municipal initiatives that have helped to overcome obstacles such as these, either by removing barriers or providing positive incentives. Most importantly, they have resulted in concrete results "on the ground, " in that they have helped trigger or facilitate projects that may not have otherwise gone ahead. The report profiles 12 case studies of local initiatives that support intensification. This document is intended to be of use to municipal officials and other stakeholders across the country who may be looking for mechanisms with which to encourage intensification.
