Download or read book Ground water Use in Canada 1981 written by Paul J. Hess and published by Environment Canada, Inland Waters Directorate. This book was released on 1986 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Estimates of the volume of ground-water use in Canada were prepared for 1981. Six maps show the spatial distribution and annual volumes of ground water used by municipal and industrial users. The major findings of this report are the following: (1) over 6.2 million, or 26% of Canadians, rely on ground water for their domestic supply; (2) approximately 38% of the municipalities in Canada rely entirely or partially on ground water; (3) approximately 1.46 billion cubic metres, or about 4% of total water use in Canada, is obtained from ground water (this percentage is increased to 8% if water use by the thermal component within the industrial sector is not included in the calculations); (4) approximately 87% of total water use for livestock is obtained from ground water; and (5) ground water is important for fish enhancement programs"--Abstract, p. vii.

Book The Proposal Economy

Download or read book The Proposal Economy written by Pamela Stern and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2015-01-26 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001 the northern Ontario town of Cobalt won a competition to be named the province’s “Most Historic Town.” This honour, though purely symbolic, came as Cobalters were also applying for and winning federal and provincial development grants to remake this once important silver mining centre as a destination for mining heritage tourism. This book, based on extended ethnographic and multi-method research in Cobalt, examines the multiple ways that development proposal writing is intertwined with neoliberal citizenship. Under current forms of neoliberal governance, proposal making and applying for grants have become normalized activities for individuals, non-profit organizations, schools, and municipalities. The authors argue that the residents of Cobalt have become entrenched in a “proposal economy,” a system that empowers them to imagine, engage, and propose but not to count on the state to provide certain services. The Proposal Economy makes an empirical and theoretical contribution to the literature on citizenship and neoliberal governance. In addition to the detailed and nuanced ethnography, it provides new perspectives on the ways that citizenship is produced and reproduced under conditions of neoliberalism.

Book Measuring the Effectiveness of Regional Governing Systems

Download or read book Measuring the Effectiveness of Regional Governing Systems written by David K. Hamilton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-23 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional governance is a topical public policy issue and is receiving increased attention from scholars, government officials and civic leaders. As countries continue to urbanize and centralize economic functions and population in metropolitan regions, the traditional governing system is not equipped to handle policy issues that spill over local government boundaries. Governments have utilized four basic approaches to address the regional governing problem: consolidating governments, adding a regional tier, creating regional special districts, and functional cooperative approaches. The first two are structural approaches that require major (radical) changes to the governing system. The latter two are governance approaches that contemplate marginal changes to the existing governance structure and rely generally on cooperation with other governments and collaboration with the nongovernmental sector. Canada and the United States have experimented with these basic forms of regional governance. This book is a systematic analysis of these basic forms as they have been experienced by North American cities. Utilizing cases from Canada and the United States, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the pros and cons of each approach to regional governance. This research provides an additional perspective on Canadian and U.S. regional governance and adds to the knowledge of Canadian and United States governing systems. This study contributes to the literature on the various approaches to regional governance as well as bringing together the most current literature on regional governance. The author develops a framework of the values that a regional governing system should provide and measures to assess how well each basic approach achieves these values. Based on this assessment, he suggests an approach to regional governance for North American metropolitan areas that best achieves these values.

Book It s a Working Man s Town

Download or read book It s a Working Man s Town written by Thomas William Dunk and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a valuable addition to the debate on the nature of contemporary working-class culture, Thomas Dunk shows that the function and meaning of gender, ethnicity, popular leisure activities, and common-sense knowledge are intimately linked with the way an individual's experience is structured by class. After reviewing the principal theoretical problems relating to the study of working-class culture and consciousness, Dunk provides a detailed ethnographic analysis of "the Boys" – the male working-class subjects of this study. Male working-class culture, he argues, contains both the seeds of a radical response to social inequality and a defensive reaction against alternative social practices and ideas. In a new forward, Dunk contextualizes the original text with regard to the debates about class and masculinity that have occurred since the book was first published.
