Book excerpt: Elvan, eldest of House Galmoth, is content to stay in and always eager to jump into character. Someday, he will find a facade that suits him, one that meets his mother's expectations of him. He's spent the last two years playing investigator, raking through ledgers to clear his mother's name while ignoring his family business and noble House crumbling around him. When the last servant quits, Elvan is forced back into the world and must choose between continuing his fruitless investigation and saving his home from the collectors. On his last lead, he meets Drace, a lonely shopkeeper who sweeps him away on a flight from the royal inquisitors, who is the same man that arrested Elvan's mother. They dive deep into the kingdom of Spheris, shrouded by the smog of rising industry, lit by the flicker of gas lamps. Here, the magic users must practice their art in secret, away from the eyes of the crown. After discovering their intertwined pasts, Elvan and Drace forge forward, uncovering the plot that led to his mother's exile, but who can they go to when the guilty ones are at the highest level of power? Can they dodge the inquisitors and questionable motivations of Elvan's sister, the Duchess, long enough to bring the crown to justice? Or will they fall to the same fate as Elvan's mother? Elvan will have to prepare for his greatest role yet: Himself.

  • Author : Dag Nikolaus Hasse

Download or read book Success and Suppression written by Dag Nikolaus Hasse and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Renaissance marked a turning point in Europe’s relationship to Arabic thought. On the one hand, Dag Nikolaus Hasse argues, it was the period in which important Arabic traditions reached the peak of their influence in Europe. On the other hand, it is the time when the West began to forget, and even actively suppress, its debt to Arabic culture. Success and Suppression traces the complex story of Arabic influence on Renaissance thought. It is often assumed that the Renaissance had little interest in Arabic sciences and philosophy, because humanist polemics from the period attacked Arabic learning and championed Greek civilization. Yet Hasse shows that Renaissance denials of Arabic influence emerged not because scholars of the time rejected that intellectual tradition altogether but because a small group of anti-Arab hard-liners strove to suppress its powerful and persuasive influence. The period witnessed a boom in new translations and multivolume editions of Arabic authors, and European philosophers and scientists incorporated—and often celebrated—Arabic thought in their work, especially in medicine, philosophy, and astrology. But the famous Arabic authorities were a prominent obstacle to the Renaissance project of renewing European academic culture through Greece and Rome, and radical reformers accused Arabic science of linguistic corruption, plagiarism, or irreligion. Hasse shows how a mixture of ideological and scientific motives led to the decline of some Arabic traditions in important areas of European culture, while others continued to flourish.

It’s like a mashup of Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and the Iron Druid Chronicles, with a pinch of Doctor Who for flavor.” -- HPB Review ˃˃˃ "Excellent YA Fantasy/Sci-Fi Series Debut, with a hint of Neil Gaiman." -- Jamie Maltman, author of "Bush with Darkness" ˃˃˃ "I found myself connecting with Sawyer, a homeschooled teen with a knack for following his curiosity and instinct, and was drawn into discovering the world of knotwork alongside him. Such a fascinating idea! " -- Pam Laricchia, author of "Free to Learn" ˃˃˃ "The characters are completely believable (think Orson Scott Card) and the story concept is a new and surprising twist on the concept of the standard Sci-Fi multiverse. I have been following Kevin Tumlinson's work for a couple of years now, this latest book is definitely his best so far. He has found his own Voice as a writer, and I like that Voice." -- David Grundy "Tumlinson's Sawyer Jackson reaches new fantasy heights — a real contender in the fantasy genre!" "Slip into the Knotwork ... a new and unique fantasyland from Kevin Tumlinson." "Incredible flights of fantasy!" "A slight bit of fantasy noir, and yet still the Sawyer Jackson series could even be an appropriate set of fantasy books for kids age 9-12."

Book Contextualizing Premodern Philosophy

Download or read book Contextualizing Premodern Philosophy written by Katja Krause and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together contributions from distinguished scholars in the history of philosophy, focusing on points of interaction between discrete historical contexts, religions, and cultures found within the premodern period. The contributions connect thinkers from antiquity through the Middle Ages and include philosophers from the three major monotheistic faiths—Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. By emphasizing premodern philosophy’s shared textual roots in antiquity, particularly the writings of Plato and Aristotle, the volume highlights points of cross-pollination between different schools, cultures, and moments in premodern thought. Approaching the complex history of the premodern world in an accessible way, the editors organize the volume so as to underscore the difficulties the premodern period poses for scholars, while accentuating the fascinating interplay between the Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and Latin philosophical traditions. The contributors cover many topics ranging from the aims of Aristotle’s cosmos, the adoption of Aristotle’s Organon by al-Fārābī, and the origins of the Plotiniana Arabica to the role of Ibn Gabirol’s Fons vitae in the Latin West, the ways in which Islamic philosophy shaped thirteenth-century Latin conceptions of light, Roger Bacon’s adaptation of Avicenna for use in his moral philosophy, and beyond. The volume’s focus on "source-based contextualism" demonstrates an appreciation for the rich diversity of thought found in the premodern period, while revealing methodological challenges raised by the historical study of premodern philosophy. Contextualizing Premodern Philosophy: Explorations of the Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and Latin Traditions is a stimulating resource for scholars and advanced students working in the history of premodern philosophy.
