Book Burial Records 1717 1962 of the Eastern Cemetery Portland Maine

Download or read book Burial Records 1717 1962 of the Eastern Cemetery Portland Maine written by William B. Jordan and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern Cemetery is Portland's oldest burial ground. It is believed that burials were made here in the 1600s, but no records or markers survive from that period. Record keeping was equally lax in the 1700s. To bring order into the use of the cemetery, the Selectmen were authorized in 1795 to lay out the "Burial Ground into regular plats & divisions," but it was not until 1890 that a thorough and systematic survey of this large cemetery was finally done. At that time William Augustus Goodwin produced a listing of 4,136 gravestones, monuments, tombs, and grave sites, along with an accurate map showing the location of every marker. In compiling the present volume, Professor Jordan visited and checked each grave on the Goodwin map, and made additions and corrections as required. He also compared the stones with the extant burial records, and has included entries for allthose persons known to have been buried here, but for whom there are no markers. In addition, several appendices list individuals whose bodies were consigned to the Portland Medical School or the Maine Medical School for teaching purposes, individuals buried in the Alms House Yard, victims of the shipwreck of the Bohemia and the 1866 Portland fire, and individuals placed in the City Tomb whose subsequent burial place was not recorded in the city burial records. In this large collection of about 7,000 records, each entry gives the person's full name, death date, and burial location. Other data, such as age, relationships, military service, race, and religion are given where known. The data are alphabetically arranged by the name of the deceased, and there is a cross-index to other persons named. The introduction to the volume gives a detailed history of the cemetery.

Book Hamilton County Ohio Burial Records Harrison Township

Download or read book Hamilton County Ohio Burial Records Harrison Township written by Mary H. Remler and published by Heritage Books. This book was released on 1984 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Hazel L. Berry and Mary H. Remler. This volume comprises genealogical data gleaned from five cemeteries within the Harrison Township. Harrison is the northern-most township of Hamilton County, and the first plat for this village was recorded in 1813. Records are grouped by cemetery, arranged by lot number, and include (as available) first and last name, date of birth or age, date of death, and remarks. In 1817, Jabez C. Tunis donated one acre of land for a cemetery, stipulating that it always be used as a public burial ground-the Harrison Park Cemetery. Sixty-three burials were removed to Glen Haven Cemetery in 1887, and in 1894, the remaining burials were removed to the Woodlawn Cemetery. Three burials remain in the park to fulfill the donation requirements. Glen Haven Cemetery was incorporated in 1857 and is still active. This, the largest section, also provides (as available) place of birth, cause of death, and place of residence. Land for the Woodlawn Cemetery was deeded to the Presbyterian Church in 1832. The cemetery, now owned by Harrison Township, is still active. On February 10, 1829, two and three-tenths acres of land were deeded to the Presbyterian Church. The church building was demolished in 1879, but the Old Baptist Cemetery remains. The cemetery that later became St. John The Baptist (Catholic) Cemetery was first established in 1857. A map of Hamilton County cemeteries, maps of the individual cemeteries (with lot locations), a list of abbreviations used, and a surname index augment the text.

Book Burial Inscriptions and Other Data of Burials in Berwick York County Maine to the Year 1922 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Burial Inscriptions and Other Data of Burials in Berwick York County Maine to the Year 1922 Classic Reprint written by Wilbur Daniel Spencer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Burial Inscriptions and Other Data of Burials in Berwick, York County, Maine, to the Year 1922 An attempt to preserve burial records is a seri ous and far from satisfactory undertaking. Such data are often wrong or incomplete. In some cases, where there are no markers, the cemetery or town records furnished the facts required. This was only possible, with accuracy, since 1892, when the law made imperative the registration of vital statistics, and when the situation of the grave was still known. Many burial grounds are entirely lost. Ancient burial inscriptions, for a period of many years in the town's history, provide the only inform ation of many early residents. The names of some of them will never be found hereafter except in these lists, as they were transcribed long ago and the tab lets themselves are defaced or entirely gone. Book Early Anglo Saxon cemeteries

Download or read book Early Anglo Saxon cemeteries written by Duncan Sayer and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY) open access license. This book is available as an open access ebook under a CC-BY licence. Early Anglo-Saxon cemeteries are known for their grave goods, but this abundance obscures their interest as the creations of pluralistic, multi-generational communities. This book explores over one hundred early Anglo-Saxon and Merovingian cemeteries, using a multi-dimensional methodology to move beyond artefacts. It offers an alternative way to explore the horizontal organisation of cemeteries from a holistically focused perspective. The physical communication of digging a grave and laying out a body was used to negotiate the arrangement of a cemetery and to construct family and community stories. This approach foregrounds community, because people used and reused cemetery spaces to emphasise different characteristics of the deceased, based on their own attitudes, lifeways and live experiences. This book will appeal to scholars of Anglo-Saxon studies and will be of value to archaeologists interested in mortuary spaces, communities and social archaeology.

Book A Graveyard Preservation Primer

Download or read book A Graveyard Preservation Primer written by Lynette Strangstad and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Graveyard Preservation Primer has proven itself to be a time-tested resource for those who are seeking information regarding the protection and preservation of historic graveyards. It was first written to help stewards of early burial grounds responsibly and effectively preserve their graveyards. Much information found in the first edition of the book remains valid today. Still, much has changed in the twenty-five years since its first publication, and the new edition reflects these changes. Attitudes and the understanding of historic graveyards as an important cultural resource have grown and developed over the years. Likewise, changes in treatments have also taken place. Perhaps the most dramatic change in burial ground preservation is in the world of technology. Changes in computers and the way we use them have also changed preservation practices in historic graveyards. Discussion of technological changes in the new edition includes those in mapping, surveying, photography, archaeology, and other areas of evaluation and planning. Consideration is given, too, to maintenance and conservation treatments, including both traditional and newer treatments for stone, concrete, and metals. Metals were not discussed in the earlier editions, and protection and preservation of the landscape as it relates to graveyards is an expanded focus of this book. The historic preservation of cemeteries and burial grounds is an aspect within the discipline of historic preservation that is unknown to many. Those whose responsibility is the care of these historic sites may be unfamiliar with appropriate approaches to such areas as documentation, planning, maintenance, and conservation. Unwitting personnel can do irreparable harm to these important cultural resources. The Primer is an effort to protect historic cultural resources by breaching the gap between maintenance staff, cemetery boards, friends’ groups, and graveyard preservation professionals by offering readily available, responsible information regarding graveyard protection and preservation. It is also designed to assist those who would undertake a preservation project in the reclaiming of a neglected or abandoned historic cemetery. The book is generously illustrated with diagrams and photos illustrating procedures and gravemarker and graveyard forms, styles, and materials. The appendix section is completely updated and expanded, offering a worthwhile resource in itself.
