Book excerpt: Now in its second edition, this comprehensive history of the Celts draws on archaeological, historical, literary and linguistic evidence to provide a comprehensive and colourful overview from origins to the present. Divided into three parts, the first covers the continental Celts in prehistory and antiquity, complete with accounts of the Celts in Germany, France, Italy, Iberia and Asia Minor. Part Two follows the Celts from the departure of the Romans to the late Middle Ages, including the migrations to and settlements in Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Brittany. This section also includes discussions of the Celtic kingdoms and the significance of Christianisation. Part Three brings the history of the Celts up to the present, covering the assimilation of the Celts within the national cultures of Great Britain, France and Ireland. Included in this consideration are the suppression of Gaelic, the declines, revivals and survivals of languages and literatures, and the histories of Celtic culture. The book concludes with a discussion of the recent history of the meaning of 'Celtic' and an examination of the cultural legacy of the Celts in the modern era.

  • Publisher : Clarendon Press

Download or read book Beyond the Rubicon written by J. H. C. Williams and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2001-07-12 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the middle and late Republican periods (fourth to first centuries BC) the Romans lived in fear and loathing of the Gauls of northern Italy, caused primarily by their collective historical memory of the destruction of the city of Rome by Gauls in 387 BC. By examining the literary evidence relating to the historical, ethnographic, and geographic writings of Greeks and Romans of the period - focusing on invasion and conflict - this book attempts to answer the questions how and why the Gauls became the deadly enemy of the Romans. Dr Williams also examines the problematic notion of the Gauls as 'Celts' which has been so influential in historical and archaeological accounts of northern Italy in the late pre-Roman Iron Age by modern scholars. The book concludes that ancient literary evidence and modern ethnic presumptions about 'Celts' are not a sound basis for reconstructing either the history of the Romans' interaction with the peoples of northern Italy or for interpreting the material evidence.

Book Gallo Roman Bronzes and the Process of Romanization The Cobannus Hoard

Download or read book Gallo Roman Bronzes and the Process of Romanization The Cobannus Hoard written by John Pollini and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the first comprehensive publication of a cache of eight bronzes from east-central Gaul. The types of objects and accompanying inscriptions suggest that these bronzes originally came from a sanctuary of a god named Cobannus. The first part of the book describes, analyzes, and interprets the individual objects, which are divided between the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Shelby White - Leon Levy Collection. The latter part of this work places the cache within a chronological, cultic, and cultural context. The Cobannus hoard is valuable not only from an artistic point of view but also for the information it provides on many different aspects of the religious, social, and political life of Roman Gaul. The book is lavishly illustrated, with 2 maps and 117 illustrations.
