Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 36: Cellular Analogues of Conditioning and Neural Plasticity is a collection of paper that details the various aspects of neural plasticity from various methodological perspectives. The title covers the physiological–morphological and biochemical methods in studying neural plasticity. The coverage of the text includes topics such as neuroplasticity in the superior cervical ganglion as a consequence of long-lasting inhibition; evidence for remodeling of synaptic contacts in muscles of adult frog; and calcium and presynaptic factors in synaptic plasticity. The selection also covers the regulation of acetylcholine receptors; molecular mechanisms of sensitization and desensitization of ß-receptors connected with adenylate cyclase; and cellular and behavioral studies of learning and memory in simpler systems. The book will be of great use to neurologists, neurosurgeons, and behavioral scientists.

Book Cellular Mechanisms of Conditioning and Behavioral Plasticity

Download or read book Cellular Mechanisms of Conditioning and Behavioral Plasticity written by D.L. Alkon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I would like first to thank Charles Woody and his organizing committee for arranging the symposium on the "Cellular Mechanisms of Conditioning and Behavioral Plasticity," which was also a satellite meeting of the International Union of Physiological Sciences 30th International Congress. The proceedings of this symposium are represented by the chapters that follow. During the 1970s, Dr. Woody and co-workers were able to carry out a remarkable series of microelectrode studies, both intracellular and extracellular, of cortical nerve cells during conditioning of the eye-blink response to sound in the intact waking cat. He demonstrated enduring changes in excitability and membrane resistance in pericruciate cortical cells during associative conditioning of the eye blink, changes that are facilitated by ACh and cGMP and reinforced by stimulation of the hypothalamus (the latter con firming the original studies of Voronin). These findings have been of considerable im portance in our attempt to understand the conditioning process at the cellular level.

Book Neural Network Models of Conditioning and Action

Download or read book Neural Network Models of Conditioning and Action written by Michael L. Commons and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, this title was the result of a symposium held at Harvard University. It presents some of the exciting interdisciplinary developments of the time that clarify how animals and people learn to behave adaptively in a rapidly changing environment. The contributors focus on aspects of how recognition learning, reinforcement learning, and motor learning interact to generate adaptive goal-oriented behaviours that can satisfy internal needs – an area of inquiry as important for understanding brain function as it is for designing new types of freely moving autonomous robots. Since the authors agree that a dynamic analysis of system interactions is needed to understand these challenging phenomena – and neural network models provide a natural framework for representing and analysing such interactions – all the articles either develop neural network models or provide biological constraints for guiding and testing their design.

Book Gravitational Physiology

Download or read book Gravitational Physiology written by J. Hideg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 19: Gravitational Physiology covers the proceedings of the 28th International Congress of Physiological Sciences. The volume presents studies that tackle the biological concerns caused by the interactions between complex living organisms and altered gravitational field. The articles in the text are organized into parts, based on their main theme. The first part presents materials about the general problems when adapting to altered gravity system, such as physiological mechanisms of adaptation of mammals to weightlessness, and studies of biorhythms in biosatellite experiments. In the next part, the selection presents papers about metabolism and morphology that include stress metabolic aspects in space flight and the effect of spaceflight on human lymphocyte activation. The text also covers the function and structure of gravity-dependent systems, along with hypokinesia and immobilization. The book will be of great interest to health professionals involved in various space programs.

Book Cardiovascular Physiology Microcirculation and Capillary Exchange

Download or read book Cardiovascular Physiology Microcirculation and Capillary Exchange written by A. G. B. Kovàch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Physiological Sciences, Volume 7: Cardiovascular Physiology: Microcirculation and Capillary Exchange is a collection of papers that tackles the advances in the understanding of microcirculation and capillary exchange. The text first details the coordination of microcirculatory function with oxygen demand in skeletal muscle, and then proceeds to discussing the role of intravascular pressure in the regulation of the microcirculation. Next, the selection covers the circulatory actions of prostacyclin and thromboxane, along with the routes of transcapillary transport. The last two parts of the text deal with the lymphatic system and blood-brain barrier. The book will be of great interest to health professionals, particularly cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons.

The purpose of the symposium was to examine current know ledge of the brain's function in supporting conditioned behavior. The research of those assembled has led to much of this knowledge. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the organizational help of Drs. D. Alkon, D. Cohen, J. Disterhoft, T. Thach, R. Thompson, and L. Voronin, and also the UCLA Brain Research Institute, the UCLA Mental Re tardation Research Center, and Dolores Squires, who assisted faith fully in the administrative organization of the symposium. Book Neural Plasticity

Download or read book Neural Plasticity written by Peter R. Huttenlocher and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neural plasticity--the brain's ability to change in response to normal developmental processes, experience, and injury--is a critically important phenomenon for both neuroscience and psychology. Increasing evidence about the extent of plasticity--long past the supposedly critical first three years--has recently emerged. Neural Plasticity offers the first succinct and lucid integration of this research and its implications. Pointing out the negative and the positive consequences of plasticity, Peter Huttenlocher describes plasticity in children and adults (in normal aging and in response to trauma), in sensory systems, the motor cortex, higher cortical functions, and language development, proceeding system by system, and paying particular attention to the cerebral cortex. One of the book's strengths is its range of references, not only to studies on human subjects but to the experimental study of animal models as well. This book will be a unique contribution to research and to the literature on clinical neuroscience.

Book Neuroscience for Rehabilitation

Download or read book Neuroscience for Rehabilitation written by Helen Sue Cohen and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 1999 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this introductory text uses clinical examples to bridge the gap between basic neuroscience and the practice of neurologic rehabilitation. Each chapter illustrates the relationship between the nervous system and behavior. Current, portable, and clearly written, the text covers discrete systems for acquiring information, the neural mechanisms that control specific kinds of human function, and how the nervous system responds to insult and injury. New in this edition: Neurotransmitters, support structures and blood supply, sensorimotor interaction, and aging of the nervous system.
