Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, I have been interested in global analysis of nonlinear systems. The original interest stemmed from the study of snap-through stability and jump phenomena in structures. For systems of this kind, where there exist multiple stable equilibrium states or periodic motions, it is important to examine the domains of attraction of these responses in the state space. It was through work in this direction that the cell-to-cell mapping methods were introduced. These methods have received considerable development in the last few years, and have also been applied to some concrete problems. The results look very encouraging and promising. However, up to now, the effort of developing these methods has been by a very small number of people. There was, therefore, a suggestion that the published material, scattered now in various journal articles, could perhaps be pulled together into book form, thus making it more readily available to the general audience in the field of nonlinear oscillations and nonlinear dynamical systems. Conceivably, this might facilitate getting more people interested in working on this topic. On the other hand, there is always a question as to whether a topic (a) holds enough promise for the future, and (b) has gained enough maturity to be put into book form. With regard to (a), only the future will tell. With regard to (b), I believe that, from the point of view of both foundation and methodology, the methods are far from mature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Workshop on Control Mechanics has been held at the University of South ern California annually since 1988 under the leadership of late Professor Janislaw M. Skowronski. The primary goal of Professor Skowronski in organizing this series of work shops was to promote the use of advanced mechanics method in control theory with a special emphasis on the control of nonlinear mechanical systems subject to uncertainty. This goal has been achieved through a consistent participation of a large number of researchers in the field of control and mechanics and an intensive exchange of their ideas. Professor Skowronski passed away unexpectedly on March 21, 1992, after the conclusion of the Fifth Workshop. The great success of the Fifth Workshop as well as the entire Control Mechanics Workshops over the years is almost exclusively due to his dedication, enthusiasm, and organizational capabilities. His untimely demise is a great loss to us and to the mechanics and control community. The proceedings of the Fifth Workshop presented in this volume are dedicated to Professor Angelo Miele, one of the pioneers and ,a leading contributor in many fields of control theory and its applications. His contribution spans a wide range of topics such as optimization theory, flight mechanics, astrodynamics, ocean engineering, and numerical methods. The presentations in the workshop reflected many of the areas in which Professor Miele has been active. The papers included in this volume are divided into three major groups of topics.

Book Towards Whole cell Mapping of Single molecule Dynamics

Download or read book Towards Whole cell Mapping of Single molecule Dynamics written by Mohamed Hossam El Beheiry and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging of single molecules inside living cells confers insight to biological function at its most granular level. Single molecules experience a nanoscopic environment that is complicated, and in general, poorly understood. The modality of choice for probing this environment is live-cell localisation microscopy, where trajectories of single molecules can be captured. For many years, the great stumbling block in comprehension of physical processes at this scale was the lack of information accessible; statistical significance and robust assertions are hardly possible from a few dozen trajectories. It is the onset of high-density single-particle tracking that has dramatically reframed the possibilities of such studies. Importantly, the consequential amounts of data it provides invites the use of powerful statistical tools that assign probabilistic descriptions to experimental observations. In this thesis, Bayesian inference tools have been developed to elucidate the behaviour of single molecules via the mapping of motion parameters. As a readout, maps describe heterogeneities at local and whole-cell scales. Importantly, they grant quantitative details into basic cellular processes. This thesis uses the mapping approach to study receptor-scaffold interactions inside neurons and non-neuronal cells. A promising system in which interactions are patterned is also examined. It is shown that interactions of different types of chimeric glycine receptors to the gephyrin scaffold protein may be described and distinguished in situ. Finally, the prospects of whole-cell mapping in three-dimensions are evaluated based on a discussion of state-of-the-art volumetric microscopy techniques.

Book Membrane Organization and Dynamics

Download or read book Membrane Organization and Dynamics written by Amitabha Chattopadhyay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together information on membrane organization and dynamics from a variety of spectroscopic, microscopic and simulation approaches, spanning a broad range of time scales. The implication of such dynamic information on membrane function in health and disease is a topic of contemporary interest. The chapters cover various aspects of membrane lipid and protein dynamics, explored using a battery of experimental and theoretical approaches. The synthesis of information and knowledge gained by utilizing multiple approaches will provide the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the underlying membrane dynamics and function, which will help to develop robust dynamic models for the understanding of membrane function in healthy and diseased states. In the last few years, crystal structures of an impressive number of membrane proteins have been reported, thanks to tremendous advances in membrane protein crystallization techniques. Some of these recently solved structures belong to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, which are particularly difficult to crystallize due to their intrinsic flexibility. Nonetheless, these static structures do not provide the necessary information to understand the function of membrane proteins in the complex membrane milieu. This volume will address the dynamic nature of membrane proteins within the membrane and will provide the reader with an up-to date overview of the theory and practical approaches that can be used. This volume will be invaluable to researchers working in a wide range of scientific areas, from biochemistry and molecular biology to biophysics and protein science. Students of these fields will also find this volume very useful. This book will also be of great use to those who are interested in the dynamic nature of biological processes.
