Book Cell Biology Genetics Molecular Biology Evolution and Ecology Volume 2

Download or read book Cell Biology Genetics Molecular Biology Evolution and Ecology Volume 2 written by Dr. Sonali Santosh Kadam and published by AG Publishing House. This book was released on with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First stated as a method for understanding the basis of biological events, molecular biology seeks to understand how organisms work by delving into the structure and function of individual molecules and how these molecules interact with one another and with the larger environment. According to this book understanding how the chemicals that make up cells impact the behavior of living things is a central goal of molecular biology and genetics. To understand how these molecules work in the dynamic environment of a live cell, biologists use a wide range of molecular and genetic techniques. These methods are being used by groups in our department to investigate a broad range of issues, including as the basic mechanisms governing transcription and translation as well as pathways involved in signal transduction. Among them are the role of the senses of sight and smell and how genetic diversity in wild populations influences evolution. Although the systems being studied include a variety of model species, including bacteria, the yeast, slime molds, worms, the fruit flies, zebrafish, and mice, the findings from these research have some direct or indirect relevance to human health. This book covers the key topics in cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, evolution, and ecology, such as the structure and function of nucleic acids, a general review of cells, and DNA replication with knowledge of genetics and their evolutionary histories.

Book Evolutionary Developmental Biology

Download or read book Evolutionary Developmental Biology written by Brian K. Hall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although evolutionary developmental biology is a new field, its origins lie in the last century; the search for connections between embryonic development (ontogeny) and evolutionary change (phylogeny) has been a long one. Evolutionary developmental biology is however more than just a fusion of the fields of developmental and evolutionary biology. It forges a unification of genomic, developmental, organismal, population and natural selection approaches to evolutionary change. It is concerned with how developmental processes evolve; how evolution produces novel structures, functions and behaviours; and how development, evolution and ecology are integrated to bring about and stabilize evolutionary change. The previous edition of this title, published in 1992, defined the terms and laid out the field for evolutionary developmental biology. This field is now one of the most active and fast growing within biology and this is reflected in this second edition, which is more than twice the length of the original and brought completely up to date. There are new chapters on major transitions in animal evolution, expanded coverage of comparative embryonic development and the inclusion of recent advances in genetics and molecular biology. The book is divided into eight parts which: place evolutionary developmental biology in the historical context of the search for relationships between development and evolution; detail the historical background leading to evolutionary embryology; explore embryos in development and embryos in evolution; discuss the relationship between embryos, evolution, environment and ecology; discuss the dilemma for homology of the fact that development evolves; deal with the importance of understanding how embryos measure time and place both through development and evolutionarily through heterochrony and heterotrophy; and set out the principles and processes that underlie evolutionary developmental biology. With over one hundred illustrations and photographs, extensive cross-referencing between chapters and boxes for ancillary material, this latest edition will be of immense interest to graduate and advanced undergraduate students in cell, developmental and molecular biology, and in zoology, evolution, ecology and entomology; in fact anyone with an interest in this new and increasingly important and interdisciplinary field which unifies biology.

Book Population Genetics and Evolution

Download or read book Population Genetics and Evolution written by Gerdina de Jong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least since the 1940s neo-Darwinism has prevailed as the consensus view in the study of evolution. The mechanism of evolution in this view is natural selection leading to adaptation, working on a substrate of adapta tionally random mutations. As both the study of genetic variation in natural populations, and the study of the mathematical equations of selec tion are reckoned to a field called population genetics, population genetics came to form the core in the theory of evolution. So much so, that the fact that there is more to the theory of evolution than population genetics became somewhat obscured. The genetics of the evolutionary process, or the genetics of evolutionary change, came close to being all of evolutionary biology. In the last 10 years, this dominating position of population genetics within evolutionary biology has been challenged. In evolutionary ecology, optimization theory proved more useful than population genetics for interesting predictions, especially of life history strategies. From develop mental biology, constraints in development and the role of internal regula tion were emphasized. From paleobiology, a proposal was put forward to describe the fossil record and the evolutionary process as a series of punc tuated equilibria; thus exhorting population geneticists to give a plausible account of how such might come about. All these developments tend to obscure the central role of population genetics in evolutionary biology.
