The Bacteria Book is a fun and informative introduction to a STEM subject that brings kids up-close to the big world of tiny science. With remarkable photography, kooky character illustrations, and lots of fun facts, this book uses real-life examples of microbiology in action to show how tiny microbes affect us in big ways.

Book Recapturing a Future for Space Exploration

Download or read book Recapturing a Future for Space Exploration written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than four decades have passed since a human first set foot on the Moon. Great strides have been made in our understanding of what is required to support an enduring human presence in space, as evidenced by progressively more advanced orbiting human outposts, culminating in the current International Space Station (ISS). However, of the more than 500 humans who have so far ventured into space, most have gone only as far as near-Earth orbit, and none have traveled beyond the orbit of the Moon. Achieving humans' further progress into the solar system had proved far more difficult than imagined in the heady days of the Apollo missions, but the potential rewards remain substantial. During its more than 50-year history, NASA's success in human space exploration has depended on the agency's ability to effectively address a wide range of biomedical, engineering, physical science, and related obstacles-an achievement made possible by NASA's strong and productive commitments to life and physical sciences research for human space exploration, and by its use of human space exploration infrastructures for scientific discovery. The Committee for the Decadal Survey of Biological and Physical Sciences acknowledges the many achievements of NASA, which are all the more remarkable given budgetary challenges and changing directions within the agency. In the past decade, however, a consequence of those challenges has been a life and physical sciences research program that was dramatically reduced in both scale and scope, with the result that the agency is poorly positioned to take full advantage of the scientific opportunities offered by the now fully equipped and staffed ISS laboratory, or to effectively pursue the scientific research needed to support the development of advanced human exploration capabilities. Although its review has left it deeply concerned about the current state of NASA's life and physical sciences research, the Committee for the Decadal Survey on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space is nevertheless convinced that a focused science and engineering program can achieve successes that will bring the space community, the U.S. public, and policymakers to an understanding that we are ready for the next significant phase of human space exploration. The goal of this report is to lay out steps and develop a forward-looking portfolio of research that will provide the basis for recapturing the excitement and value of human spaceflight-thereby enabling the U.S. space program to deliver on new exploration initiatives that serve the nation, excite the public, and place the United States again at the forefront of space exploration for the global good.

Book The New Revelation

Download or read book The New Revelation written by Zemfira Minaeva and published by T/O "Neformat". This book was released on with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ancient times, man has used the trial and error method as the only available way of making decisions on all aspects of his life. According to scientific data, the trial and error method actually implies 99.99% mistakes. This means that, on average, only one out of 10,000 attempts made by man is successful. Such a poor efficiency does not leave human society with any chance to cope with the fast escalating challenges and threats of our time. This book contains information on the groundbreaking discoveries that fundamentally alter our conception of the world and human capabilities. By unifying science and religion, the author of these discoveries has managed to develop, inter alia, a scientifically proven alternative to the trial and error method. This new method of decision-making demonstrates how to make each of man’s trials successful and thereby increase the efficiency of any activity, including spiritual, dramatically - up to 10,000 times. For the first time in history, humanity can be transfigured spiritually (Mt 17:2) by using the extraordinary potential of the new knowledge. This is the only way to intellectual and technological breakthroughs that can lead the world community to unprecedented prosperity and harmony instead of the “abomination of desolation” at “the end of the age” (Mt 24:14-15).

Book Molecular Microbial Ecology of the Soil

Download or read book Molecular Microbial Ecology of the Soil written by Gudni G. Hardarson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grain legume crops, e.g. common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), and soyabeans (Glycine max L.) are amongst the main sources of protein in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Their high protein content derive from their ability, in symbiosis with Rhizobium bacteria, to fix atmospheric nitrogen. Incorporating contributions from molecular biologists, microbiologists, plant breeders and soil scientists, this volume reports the results of an FAO/IAEA Co-ordinated Research Programme (1992-1996), whose main objective was to develop molecular biological methods to study rhizobial ecology. Use of better tracking methods will help enhance biological nitrogen fixation and thus grain legume yields, while reducing their reliance on soil- and/or fertilizer-nitrogen. This volume will be invaluable to scientists working on biological nitrogen fixation, soil microbial ecology and legume production.
