Book Language Cognition and Emotion in Keats s Poetry

Download or read book Language Cognition and Emotion in Keats s Poetry written by Katrina Brannon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language, Cognition, and Emotion in Keats’s Poetry applies an innovative cognitive linguistic approach to the poetry of John Keats, the first of its kind to employ a cognitive-based framework to explore the expression and articulation of emotion in his work. Brannon adopts an embodied perspective to emotion, rooted in cognitive linguistics, cognitive grammar, and cognitive poetics but also works from figurative language and stylistics, in examining a selection of Keats’s poems. This approach allows for a close interrogation of the texts themselves but also the languages that compose them, comprising lexical and grammatical elements, which, when taken together, bring out the emotional saliency of Keatsian poetry. While revealing fresh insights into the work of John Keats, the book also sheds further light on the importance of cognitive approaches to poetic and grammatical analyses and how both language and the body can serve as forms of communication through which metaphors can be expressed and contextualized. This volume will appeal to students and scholars interested in cognitive linguistics, figurative language, emotion studies, cognitive science, and Anglophone poetry.

Book Shakespeare Christianity and Italian Paganism

Download or read book Shakespeare Christianity and Italian Paganism written by Eric Harber and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows that, when Shakespeare wrote his plays, he responded to the political, religious and social conflicts in the Christianity of the day, giving those areas a new perspective through pagan (Italian and Greek) mythology. In particular, it offers a reading of The Winter’s Tale, which it has been said is “one of the most linguistically dense, emotionally demanding and spiritually rich of all the plays”. Productions as far afield as Mexico and Paris have brought Shakespeare’s plays up to date to enhance or challenge the lives of their communities. From South Africa to Gdansk, Shakespeare has been adapted to be read in schools. His plays have prompted a dialogue with many European scholars whom this book addresses.

Book The Third Turning of the Wheel

Download or read book The Third Turning of the Wheel written by Tenshin Reb Anderson and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his previous book, Being Upright: Zen Meditation and the Bodhisattva Precepts, Reb Anderson Roshi described how we must become thoroughly grounded in conventional truth through the practice of compassion before we can receive the teachings of the ultimate truth. In The Third Turning of the Wheel, he introduces us to the next stage of our journey by invoking the wisdom of the Samdhinirmocana Sutra. According to Anderson, the main purpose behind this enigmatic sutra is to reconcile the apparent contradictions between the original teachings of the historical Buddha and the later teachings of Mahayana Buddhism. Anderson reflects on the great metaphysical questions proposed in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra—the nature of ultimate reality, the structure of human consciousness, the characteristics of phenomena, the stages of meditation, and the essential qualities of a buddha—with the clarity of a scholar and the insight of a practitioner.
