Book excerpt: Freemasonry is a religion of works. One of its many symbols is the balance. Masons believe they will be judged by their works, based upon the balance of right and wrong in their lives. In this Picture Book you will see the true nature of Freemasonry. In II Cor. 11:13-15 we read of the "works" religions: "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore, it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." All Masons in America enter Blue Lodge, which contains three degrees, illustrated by the three steps at the base of the pyramid. Most Masons (85%) never progress beyond Blue Degrees. Those who wish to delve deeper into the mysteries choose either the Scottish Rite (also called Jewish Rite) of 30 degrees on the left side of the pyramid, or the York Rite (also called Christian Rite) of 10 degrees on the right side of the pyramid, for a total of 33 and 13 degrees respectively. York Rite is practiced only in the Americas, whereas the Scottish Rite is worldwide. Both are Templar Rites. Many Masons in America join both Rites. The highest degree a Mason can earn is 32° Scottish Rite or 13° York Rite. Both are equal in prestige. 33° cannot be earned. It is honorary, awarded by the ruling body of Universal Freemasonry -- the Supreme Council. At any given time approximately 5,000 33rd degree Masons are in the world -- most of whom hold high positions in their governments. Initially, only 32° Scottish Rite Masons and 13° York Rite Masons could join the Shrine. Shriners, who operate Children's Hospitals, take an oath and pray to Allah, the god of Moslems (see pp. 28-30 this section). However, since 9/11 terrorist attacks on America by Moslems, Shriner membership has been decimated. To keep their Children's Hospitals open, Shriners have opened membership to 3° Master Masons.

My books and papers were destroyed by fire with the rest of my property in 1931, so that of material, consciously prepared or preserved as such, I have none. I had, however, the habit ever since leaving England in 1904 of writing weekly to my mother, and of enclosing briefly minuted items I thought might entertain her. All these documents she kept with my letters, including a few diaries of special missions or journeys during the Wan In the longest of these, describing Baghdad in 1917, she inked over my pencil version with the result, as in a palimpsest, that some of the words she could not read then I cannot decipher now. These surviving records I have wherever possible quoted in original with, I hope, a gain in immediacy and actuality by recording not only historic facts, sometimes already known, but also my feelings at the time with stories and details, trifling in themselves yet constituting atmosphere the hardest of all things to recapture after many years. There are no corrections but many omissions, especially of personal remarks intended only for home consumption. The retention of many faults of youthful slang and flippancy proceeds not so much from any illusion as to their intrinsic demerits as from a preference for the varied patina of the past over the shiny smoothness of a Vernis Martin surface. The loss of a slowly collected library bearing on the chief interests of a mans life is a handicap, less only than the loss of serious docu ments. Not total replacement, not even the Socialist ideal of the British Museum Library access to everything, possession of nothing can recall the annotations andcross-references of many years. In a book full of Oriental names it is impossible to avoid the vexed question of transliteration. That is a subject upon which, as indicated, I have strong ideas and even stronger feelings. In 1920 Sir Herbert Samuel made me Chairman of a small Committee appointed for the purpose of transliterating Palestinian Arabic. We worked long and hard, and in due course submitted to His Excellency the neat little viii . Preface brochure which at this moment meets my resentful gaze. One, headquartered in London, subscribes to and promotes an idolatrous and pantheistic view of the world. It is monarchist, capitalistic, wealthy, right-wing. The other, in Paris, is atheistic and humanistic in origin and outlook. It is republican, socialist, poor, left-wing. One is Scarlet. The other, the Beast. The breakthrough theory which I have developed with Scripture as my guide makes sense of the massive literature I have collected on Freemasonry as well as its apparent contradictions. My library includes books written by members of and defectors from both English and French Freemasonry. At the beginning of my research, like many other revisionist authors, I thought revisionist authors were reporting one single plot. I gradually realized that many authors were exposing what in reality were often the machinations of one group of conspirators against the other. The devices of both wings of Masonry were so similar that without Scripture as a guide, one could easily perceive only a single intrigue. This interesting twist in the historical drama, confirmed again and again by my research, points to the existence of a struggle between the two powers in Freemasonry. Although revisionist authors are supposedly concerned about one plot, I noticed that all exposes pointed to Paris as the center of an intrigue before World War I. After the War, however, evidence points to the shift of intrigue to London. I will explain this shift in the course of this book.
