The Science of Sadness proposes an original scientific account of grief, melancholy, and nostalgia, advocating a unique ethological approach to these familiar, woeful emotions. One of the leading scholars in the psychology of music and music cognition, David Huron draws on hundreds of studies from physiology, medicine, neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and the arts to resolve long-standing problems that have stymied modern emotion research. A careful examination of sadness-related behaviors reveals their biological and social functions, which Huron uses to formulate a new theory about how emotions in general are displayed and interpreted. We’ve all shed tears of joy, tears of grief, tears of pain. While different emotions often share the same weepy display, Huron identifies the single function that unites them. Bulgaria and Romania are preparing for accession and are expected to join in 2007. Croatia submitted its application for membership in 2002 and Macedonia in 2004. Part One of this paper presents an overall analysis of the situation and development of producer groups and farmer cooperatives across the CEE countries, including the new EU members, the applicant countries and Balkan states alike. Part Two provides a case study of FAO's experiences and lessons learned with technical assistance programmes and projects in the subregion. The example presents a number of practical suggestions as to how development organisations, governments, donors and advisers might be best able to facilitate the formulation and implementation of policies and strategies that promote the further development of more autonomous and financially sustainable producers' organisations and cooperatives in CEE countries.

This book celebrates a community whose legacy can be found as physical traces in the landscape, and in the social and economic transformations that have occurred over the decades in the larger society. As a result of the 2014 apology, supported by all members of the legislative assembly, for historic laws directly and specifically imposed on Chinese Canadians by past provincial governments, a number of legacy projects were formulated. These projects, including this book, Celebration: Chinese Canadian Legacies in British Columbia, were developed and advised by a council consisting of community leaders and academics (in total, 20 members and two co-chairs). As with all legacy projects, this book reflects the goals of educating the public and increasing awareness of past discriminatory practices.
