Robin Blyth has more than enough bother in his life. He’s struggling to be a good older brother, a responsible employer, and the harried baronet of a seat gutted by his late parents’ excesses. When an administrative mistake sees him named the civil service liaison to a hidden magical society, he discovers what’s been operating beneath the unextraordinary reality he’s always known. Now Robin must contend with the beauty and danger of magic, an excruciating deadly curse, and the alarming visions of the future that come with it—not to mention Edwin Courcey, his cold and prickly counterpart in the magical bureaucracy, who clearly wishes Robin were anyone and anywhere else. Robin’s predecessor has disappeared, and the mystery of what happened to him reveals unsettling truths about the very oldest stories they’ve been told about the land they live on and what binds it. Thrown together and facing unexpected dangers, Robin and Edwin discover a plot that threatens every magician in the British Isles—and a secret that more than one person has already died to keep. She expected plenty of it when she volunteered to serve as an old lady’s companion on an ocean liner, in order to help her beloved older brother unravel a magical conspiracy that began generations ago. What she didn’t expect was for the old lady in question to turn up dead on the first day of the voyage. Now she has to deal with a dead body, a disrespectful parrot, and the lovely, dangerously outrageous Violet Debenham, who’s also returning home to England. Violet is everything that Maud has been trained to distrust yet can’t help but desire: a magician, an actress, and a magnet for scandal. Surrounded by the open sea and a ship full of suspects, Maud and Violet must first drop the masks that they’ve both learned to wear before they can unmask a murderer and somehow get their hands on a magical object worth killing for—without ending up dead in the water themselves. Download or read book Freya written by Anthony Quinn and published by Europa Editions. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[A] double bildungsroman” of two British women “set against a background of political and cultural upheavals” in the direct aftermath of WWII (The New Yorker). It begins on May 8, 1945. The streets of London are alive with VE-Day celebrations. In the crowd, twenty-year-old Freya Wyley meets eighteen-year-old Nancy Holdaway. Freya’s acerbic wit and free-wheeling politics complement Nancy’s gentle, cautious nature, and what begins on that eventful day in history is the story of a transformative friendship that spans two decades. As Freya chooses journalism and Nancy realizes her ambitions as a novelist, their friendship takes on the nuances of sexual, emotional, and professional rivalries. Beneath the relentless thrum of changing times are the eternal battles fought by women in pursuit of independence and the search for love. Stretching from the war haunted halls of Oxford and Nuremburg to the cultural shifts of the early 1960s, Freya brings to life two extraordinary women facing down an era of political and personal tumult. “With this three-dimensional portrait of his headstrong heroine, whose hard-gloss shell conceals a hard-fought vulnerability, Quinn achieves a distinct and unusual creation.” —The New York Times

Download or read book Reverse Ritual written by Rudolf Steiner and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2001 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious ritual is often seen as a way of bringing divine influences down into the material world. In this profound and stimulating work, Rudolf Steiner and Friedrich Benesch introduce the idea of "reverse ritual"--a way that each of us can raise our souls to the spiritual realm. In this process, the everyday world becomes a portal through which we can enter the dimension of the sacred. Here, each of us can be a "priest," and each of our actions can be a cosmic, ritual act. This stimulating collection of writings on spiritual communion of humanity includes two further lectures by Steiner that show how this process can engage our social lives. Also included are two additional essays as appendices: "Sacramental and Spiritual Communion" by Dietrich Asten and "Human Encounters and Karma" by Athys Floride. The introduction by Christopher Schaefer brings these ideas into focus for modern seekers. Contents: Part One: "The Spiritual Communion of Humanity" (5 lectures from GA 219) Part Two: "Preparing for the Sixth Epoch" Part Three: Commentaries by Friedrich Benesch Appendices: Selections from Dietrich Asten: "Spiritual and Sacramental Communion" & Athys Floride: "Human Encounters and Karma."

Download or read book The Bare Enigma of Murder written by W.F. Kim-Henry and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main characters of this novel are both police officers: one is a senior female officer with a very privileged background, while the second eschews promotion and is satisfied with his lot, despite his privileged background. The book takes its cue from the machinations within the police of the early 1960s, when policing still adhered to the pro-active principles of the Peel Doctrine: all the minutiae of inter-rank and inter-departmental rivalries are brought to light. The novel covers serious crimes like murder and treason, as well as the rivalries between departments of state and a city and county police force. The solving of crimes is left to the female officer; she has to fight not only criminals but some senior officers who seem to be doing their best to undermine her. On the other hand, there are others who wish to enhance her prospects for high office. Her investigations lead her to an unconventional address where she makes a breakthrough in her enquiries; this also brings a whiff of romance into the novel. Through the convolutions of the final chapters, successes or failures in both police work and romance are revealed.
