Book Celebrating Buffalo s Waterfront

Download or read book Celebrating Buffalo s Waterfront written by Bill Zimmermann and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-13 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a great time to discover, explore, and be an active part of Buffalo's dynamic waterfront. On, near, or under the water, child or adult, there's something for everyone to love. Our waterfront is now a destination full of excitement and has a palpable new energy that's positively a cause for celebration. This book captures our waterfront's storied past and it's spectacular transformation to where we are today. The best chapters have yet to be written. As a city and as a region, we are completely inseparable from our waterfront. It's an embarrassment of wealth that is our connection to our past, present, and future. We depend on this water for our power, recreation, industry, and agriculture. It has separated us in war, and it's what binds us in peace. And for good and for bad, it dictates our weather. It's our identity to the world, reflecting our radiant beauty. In short, our water is the glue that binds us together. This fluid connection, however, is only a magnificent illusion. The same water we gaze out upon today isn't the same water we'll see tomorrow. While seemingly abundant and permanent, our glue is constantly racing away at the staggering rate of 750,000 gallons per minute. We dedicate this book as a celebration of its journey.

Book Sales Celebrations

Download or read book Sales Celebrations written by Sarah Elvins and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the two world wars, the retail world experienced tremendous changes. New forms of competition, expanded networks of communication and transportation, and the proliferation of manufactured goods posed challenges to department store and small shopkeeper alike. In western New York, and in Buffalo and Rochester in particular, retailers were a crucial part of urban life, acting as cultural brokers and civic leaders. They were also cultivators of area pride. Even as they adopted the latest merchandising techniques or stocked the newest items, merchants emphasized their local roots and their ability to put a local spin on national trends and innovations. Regional identity became a powerful selling tool not only during the prosperity of the 1920s but also through the economic crisis of the Great Depression. Sales and Celebrations explains how local traditions and institutions affected the evolution of American consumer culture. It expands our understanding of American consumerism, demonstrating that local particularities and loyalties could often coexist with, and occasionally challenge, the spread of mass consumption. In her award-winning study, Professor Sarah Elvins provides new insight into the relationship between America's largest metropolises and its smaller centers. Retailers in Buffalo and Rochester did not simply imitate the practices of their counterparts in Manhattan and Chicago; they highlighted their unique ability to serve the wants and needs of their particular markets. By drawing attention to this persistent power of the local, Sales and Celebrations illuminates a neglected aspect of the story of American culture in the interwar period.

Book Landscape Infrastructure

Download or read book Landscape Infrastructure written by Ying-Yu Hung and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrastructure is a much discussed topic within the field of landscape architecture. It regards the entire urban and rural space as a network that calls for an integrated planning and urban design approach. Natural and man-made infrastructures are viewed as forming a single, overarching whole. The book examines this robust and ecologically sustainable approach with essays by well-known experts in the field. It also documents 14 international case studies by SWA landscape architects and urban designers, among them the technologically innovative roof domes for Renzo Piano’s California Academy of Science in San Francisco, the restoration of the Buffalo Bayou in Houston, and several master plans for ecological corridors in China and Korea. Other projects develop smart re-use concepts for railroad tracks that no longer serve their original purpose, such as Kyung-Chun railway in Seoul or Katy Trail in Dallas. All projects are described extensively with technical diagrams and plans. The publication offers ideas for reinventing, repurposing, and repositioning infrastructure as a viable medium for addressing issues of ecology, transit, urbanism, and habitat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One of Richard Sullivan's Trilogy is a sweeping historical novel of the Irish-American grab for power in Buffalo NY in the 19th Century and the personalities involved: newspaper editors, politicians, thugs and innocents.Newlywed Sam Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain, was gifted with a spledid home with servants, as well as a part ownership of the Buffalo Express newspaper by his generous father-in-law, yet the Great American Storyteller would find neither happiness nor success in this unruly city. When First Ward dock-walloper Fingy Conners' family members all died mysteriously within a single year, he inherited everything, including his father's saloon. Using his saloon as the key, he set out to control labor contracting on Buffalo's docks. So overwhelming was his iron-handed saloon-boss system that within a few years he controlled the entirety of shipping on the Great Lakes, ascending to enormous wealth and power in less than a decade, defrauding voters, installing his own puppet politicians, and dominating the entire Buffalo Police Department. By hiring, paying, feeding, watering and boarding laborers out of his saloons, Conners enslaved thousands of families in Buffalo and all around the Great Lakes in misery and hunger for two decades. After the Sullivan Brothers were placed in an orphanage by their destitute mother following the death of their Union soldier father in the Civil War, poverty, insecurity and violence infected their lives. John P. Sullivan, the city's powerful First Ward alderman, was installed in that office by Fingy Conners and held it for a quarter century. The brothers grew up with Conners and maintained their troubled alliance with the saloon-boss throughout their lives. Brother James' fortuitous encounter with Mark Twain as a boy, soon after the famous author moved to Buffalo to edit the Buffalo Express newspaper, and the friendship it initiated, would have a remarkable influence on James for the rest of his life. As Detective Sergeant James E. Sullivan of the Buffalo Police Department, Jim lacked his brother's blind ambition, and found himself caught up amid forces he could not surmount. He was compelled to follow the orders of his Sheehan-Conners controlled superiors and to rescue his brother from the endless messes the Alderman created for himself.Jack White, secret murderer and Boston politician, was Buffalo's most powerful alderman, ever. Posing as a Republican, White helped pave the way for the rise of Democrats Sheehan, Sullivan and Conners. But once he'd served his purpose, his former allies swiftly did away with him.In the middle of this maelstrom are the Sullivan wives; the Alderman's Annie, who is blinded to what's transpiring around her by the perks she enjoys due to her husband's status, and the Detective's Hannah, who is rewarded with little more an endless stream of grief and frustration for standing by her spouse.
