Book excerpt: Twenty-five years after she began exchanging drawings with a mysterious boy in the guest book of a Carolina beach house, Macy Dillon is back at Sunset Beach—this time toting a hurting heart and a broken family. Questions of childhood, loss, and longing for love are explored in The Guest Book. When Macy Dillon was five years old her father encouraged her to draw a picture in the guestbook of a Carolina beach house. The next year, Macy returned to discover a drawing by an unidentified little boy on the facing page. Over the next eleven years the children continue to exchange drawings … until tragedy ends visits to the beach house altogether. During her final trip to Sunset, Macy asks her anonymous friend to draw her one last picture and tells him where to hide the guest book in hopes that one day she will return to find it—and him. Twenty-five years after that first picture, Macy is back at Sunset Beach—this time toting a broken family and a hurting heart. One night, alone by the ocean, Macy asks God to help her find the boy she never forgot, the one whose beautiful pictures touched something deep inside of her. Will she ever find him? And if she does, will the guestbook unite them or merely be the relic of a lost childhood?

Book Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall

Download or read book Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall written by Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2006 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany's (American, 1848-1933) extraordinary country estate in Oyster Bay, New York, completed in 1905, was the epitome of Tiffany's achievement and in many ways defined this multifaceted artist. Tiffany designed every aspect of the project inside and out, creating a total aesthetic environment. This publication accompanies an exhibition that reveals Tiffany's most personal art, bringing into focus this remarkable artist who lavished as much care and creativity on the design and furnishing of his home and gardens as he did on all the wide-ranging media in which he worked. Although the house tragically burned to the ground in 1957, many of its surviving architectural elements and interior characteristics are included in this volume. Also featured are Tiffany's personal collections of his own work-breathtaking stained-glass windows, paintings, glass and ceramic vases-as well as the artist's collections of Japanese, Chinese, and Native American works of art. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

Book Alsace to the Alsatians

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher J. Fischer
  • Publisher : Berghahn Books
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 9781845457242
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Alsace to the Alsatians written by Christopher J. Fischer and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region of Alsace, located between the hereditary enemies of France and Germany, served as a trophy of war four times between 1870-1945. With each shift, French and German officials sought to win the allegiance of the local populace. In response to these pressures, Alsatians invoked regionalism--articulated as a political language, a cultural vision, and a community of identity--not only to define and defend their own interests against the nationalist claims of France and Germany, but also to push for social change, defend religious rights, and promote the status of the region within the larger national community. Alsatian regionalism however, was neither unitary nor unifying, as Alsatians themselves were divided politically, socially, and culturally. The author shows that the Janus-faced character of Alsatian regionalism points to the ambiguous role of regional identity in both fostering and inhibiting loyalty to the nation. Finally, the author uses the case of Alsace to explore the traditional designations of French civic nationalism versus German ethnic nationalism and argues for the strong similarities between the two countries' conceptions of nationhood.

The most famous is Halloween, also known as Samhain, but you will be familiar with others, too, such as the Summer and Winter Solstices. Wiccans celebrate these sabbats with rituals, crafts, and food and drink, and in this book, Silja reveals how you can bring some of that magic into your life, even if working as a solitary witch. She also details other special days throughout the year, such as August 23, the Roman festival of Vulcanalia, which is celebrated with bonfires. Discover, too, how Wiccans celebrate personal rites of passage, such as the naming of a baby and a couple committing to each other in a Wiccan wedding, known as a handfasting. Finally, Silja explains how to write your own daily, weekly, or monthly rituals to bring you peace and happiness. Lavishly illustrated throughout, this is your essential guide to all your Wiccan celebrations.

  • ISBN : 3593418215
  • Pages : 277 pages

Download or read book Welcome Home Boys written by Sebastian Jobs and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
