Book 25th Anniversary of Bangladesh in Trafalgar Square

Download or read book 25th Anniversary of Bangladesh in Trafalgar Square written by Mayar Akash and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 is the 50th year of Bangladesh and as such the Bangladeshi community in UK are celebrating the 50th anniversary through various projects. The celebrations and festivities are subdued because of the Covid 19 pandemic and the lockdown restrictions; but nevertheless various events have taken place. 25 years ago on 14th April 1996, as a younger man I was in Trafalgar Square, London, taking photos of the event that took place, under the Nelson's column and the Gallery. There I was impressionable and a photography enthusiast attending and taking photos. This event was before digital photography, using 35mm film negatives. While I wasn't in the politics but as a photojournalist, it was a setting to capture memorable shots. We know that so much has changed and also so many people in the photos are no longer with us. Though they are not my relations I look at the photos memorably; as we once shared the same space in our lives; where we crossed paths. So, as they will live in my memories, I want to share them with those who, it will mean something to them.

Download or read book Bangladesh 50 written by A K M Shahidul Islam and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 16th December 1971, a new nation was born. Bangladesh, literally meaning the 'country (or land) of Bengal', came into being with a declaration of independence following nine months of liberation war. So, on 16th December 2021, the 'land of Bengal' will be celebrating its 50th Victory Day and the birth of its nation. Proud Bangladeshis from all walks of life both in the country and right across the world will come together to commemorate the occasion. It will no doubt be a time of reflection, remembrance and gratitude for the many people who lost their lives but there will also be those who wish to look forward reflecting on how far the country has come and what the future holds. The initiator of this book A K M Shahidul Islam grew up in Bangladesh but now lives in France and like many proud Bangladeshis wanted to do something to commemorate our 50th Victory Day. Mr Islam was a Tour Guide whilst studying in Dhaka for four years from 2010 to 2014. During this time, he had the opportunity to meet hundreds of guests in Bangladesh and to travel with them to all corners of Bangladesh many times. Mr Islam made lots of friends with people from different countries and they are all still in touch. To celebrate the happy moment together with Bangladeshi, Mr Islam invited his friends to share their memories of Bangladesh and its people to honour and give back to a community who offered them the best hospitality while they were at their beautiful homeland. Today, the patchwork pieces of a single bonding with friends met on the way, come together to create a rich quilt made of stories, images, emotions and vibrations. We are all proud to present you today the results of our collaboration. The 'Bangladesh@50: Through the Lens of Our Global Friends' book project consists of photographs and words that beautifully capture some unique perspectives on Bangladesh. Our memories of the country and its people are still alive today and this is strongly reflected in our short stories. These stories have all been written with love for Bangladesh and the very spirit of the book is aimed at connecting people in Bangladesh with each of the visitors. What's really interesting has been to note both the similarities and differences between the perspectives. People may have travelled to the same physical locations in Bangladesh, but their interpretation will be unique to them. In some ways, however, these unique individual experiences combine to present a complete picture of the experience of the country from the point of view of a visitor to Bangladesh. The book is available to purchase online on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing worldwide and 50% of any proceeds will be used to promote selected cultural and heritage projects in Bangladesh. First and foremost, this is a project to commemorate the birth of Bangladesh. But if we can use it as a vehicle to give back, then that's great too but the main aim is to capture a unique perspective on Bangladesh to mark the 50th Victory Day event by bringing people together and making it available to all Bangladeshis and interested parties across the world. And at a time when separation and division increasingly threaten to define us, a project that unites us rather than divides us and a unique invitation to open up to different perspectives could just be the tonic that we all need right now.

Book Politics and Governance in Bangladesh

Download or read book Politics and Governance in Bangladesh written by Ipshita Basu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its Independence in 1971, Bangladesh has made remarkable progress in terms of reducing poverty levels, achieving high levels of economic growth over a sustained period of time, and meeting its Millennium Development Goals (MDG) targets set by the United Nations. With some justification, Bangladesh is considered an international development success story, and the country appears to be well on track to meet its policy target of becoming a middle-income country by 2021, the same year the country will celebrate 50 years of Independence. This book explores the central issue of Bangladeshi politics: the weakness of governance. The coexistence of a poor governance track record and a relatively strong socioeconomic performance makes Bangladesh an intriguing case which throws up exciting and relevant conceptual and policy challenges. Structured in four sections - Political Settlement, Elites and Deep Structures; Democracy, Citizenship and Values; Civil Society, Local Context and Political Change; Informality and Accountability – the book identifies and engages with these challenges. Chapters by experts in the field share a number of conceptual and epistemological principles and offer a combination of theoretical and empirical insights, and cover a good range of contemporary issues and debate. Employing a structurally determinist perspective, this book explains politics and society in Bangladesh from a novel perspective. Academics in the field of governance and politics in developing countries, with a focus on South Asia and Bangladesh will welcome its publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s neighbourhood has witnessed crucial developments in the last decade: complex security challenges, looming economic crises, socio-political unrest, border clashes, China’s expanding engagement, India’s rising profile, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the last eight years, India has advocated the “Neighbourhood First” policy which ‘focuses on creating mutually beneficial, people-oriented, regional frameworks for stability and prosperity’. India’s neighbourhood presents complex dynamics, and the challenges demand attention and serious consideration in its policy options. The versatile neighbourhood also offers opportunities for India to extend cooperation at the regional level and address common strategic, economic, social and security concerns. India’s Neighbourhood: Challenges and Opportunities with insights of leading experts is a timely contribution to academia, practitioners, and keen readers. The book fills a critical void in the domain of neighbourhood studies and comprehensively analyses India’s bilateral relations with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Iran, the Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The book assesses the traditional security challenges like terrorism, examines crucial non-traditional security issues (hydro-politics and climate change), scans the emerging dynamics of rare earth elements and evaluates the wider possibilities of India’s role in stirring regional cooperation in these key areas. Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan)

Book Recounting the Memories of Bangladesh s Liberation War

Download or read book Recounting the Memories of Bangladesh s Liberation War written by Smruti S. Pattanaik and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-08 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book encapsulates the creation of Bangladesh with stories of some of those who made it happen —from the perspectives of people who fought for recognition of Bangla as one of the state languages of Pakistan, those who brought the stories of war to life as it progressed through the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendro, operations by valiant military men, sacrifices of Birangonas (women of valour) whose contribution to the liberation of Bangladesh has often been neglected, martyrs who laid down their lives for the birth of the nation, and those who worked among the freedom fighters and refugees and kept their morale high. The emergence of Bangladesh in 1971 shaped both the nation and its narratives that revolved around partition of the subcontinent earlier in 1947. The history of Bangladesh was rewritten from the people’s perspective. The struggle of individuals and families who contributed to the liberation of Bangladesh is etched in blood and it is but natural that their perspectives would inform those interested in studying the history of liberation in a larger context. More than fifty years have passed since Bangladesh was liberated. Yet stories of individual suffering, sacrifices and contributions illustrate how people endured the repression inflicted by the Pakistan Army on them and yet fought gallantly. Three million were killed, 2 million were raped and 10 million became refugees in India. Bangladesh’s liberation war also represents the struggle of a people to preserve their culture and identity. This book captures all these and much more, bringing in reminiscences of what 1971 represented to those who contributed directly to the war of liberation. The book will be of interest to scholars and researchers of politics and international relations, partition studies, South Asian studies and refugee and diaspora studies. The chapters in this book were originally published in Strategic Analysis.

Book Democratic Governance in Bangladesh

Download or read book Democratic Governance in Bangladesh written by Nizam Ahmed and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-07 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of government in the governing process of Bangladesh. It primarily focuses on the dilemmas and constraints faced by the successive democratic governments elected since the early 1990s. Bangladesh has had a new democratic beginning since the early 1990s and formally remained a democracy for the last the three decades. Despite impressive performance in the economic and social fields, the country has lagged far behind most of the new democracies in the political realm. This book identifies how representative institutions of governance have gradually declined under democratic governments in Bangladesh, and how disagreements on the ‘basic rules of the game’ have made the task of governing extremely difficult and democratic consolidation problematic. This book is a significant and comprehensive analysis that identifies and explains the implications of the crises in governance for democratic consolidation in Bangladesh. It will be of interest to academics studying Area Studies, in particular South Asian Studies, and the increasingly researched areas of governance, public policy, and administration.
