Book Another Sort of Freedom

Download or read book Another Sort of Freedom written by Gurcharan Das and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Another Sort of Freedom is a funny, moving and honest memoir of a man's struggle to break free from expectations. Gurcharan Das was born in Lyallpur, Punjab, during World War II, when Hitler, Churchill and Hirohito were bashing everyone around. His mother noted in her diary, 'This is a restless baby.' By age two he had become 'a difficult child', and by three she was calling him a 'troublemaker'. He discovered one day that he could run, and he has been running ever since. There are strange twists in his journey, from Partition's chaos to misguided attempts at winning over first loves. Setting out to become an engineer, he ends up with a philosophy degree from Harvard University. He then abandons a promising academic career in ivy-covered halls to become a salesman for Vicks VapoRub in India's dusty bazaars. This leads him to the CEO's position of Procter & Gamble India. One day, at the peak of his professional life, his high-powered corporate mask crumbles, and he walks away to become a celebrated writer and public intellectual. Candid, witty and wry, the memoir is filled with moments of deep introspection at every turn alongside wise observations on the author's encounters with history on four continents. This is Gurcharan Das as you have never seen him before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it isn't the official national anthem, America may be the most important and interesting patriotic song in our national repertoire. Sweet Freedom's Song: "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and Democracy in America is a celebration and critical exploration of the complicated musical, cultural and political roles played by the song America over the past 250 years. Popularly known as My Country 'Tis of Thee and as God Save the King/Queen before that this tune has a history as rich as the country it extols. In Sweet Freedom's Song, Robert Branham and Stephen Hartnett chronicle this song's many incarnations over the centuries. Colonial Americans, Southern slaveowners, abolitionists, temperance campaigners and labor leaders, among others, appropriated and adapted the tune to create anthems for their own struggles. Because the song has been invoked by nearly every grassroots movement in American history, the story of America offers important insights on the story of democracy in the United States. An examination of America as a historical artifact and cultural text, Sweet Freedoms Song is a reflection of the rebellious spirit of Americans throughout our nations history. The late Robert James Branham and his collaborator, Stephen Hartnett, have produced a thoroughly-researched, delightfully written book that will appeal to scholars and patriots of all stripes.

  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press

Download or read book Festivals of Freedom written by Mitch Kachun and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 1808, many African Americans began calling for "a day of publick thanksgiving" to commemorate this important step toward freedom. During the ensuing century, black leaders built on this foundation and constructed a distinctive and vibrant tradition through their celebrations of the end of slavery in New York State, the British West Indies, and eventually the United States as a whole. In this revealing study, Mitch Kachun explores the multiple functions and contested meanings surrounding African American emancipation celebrations from the abolition of the slave trade to the fiftieth anniversary of U.S. emancipation. Excluded from July Fourth and other American nationalist rituals for most of this period, black activists used these festivals of freedom to encourage community building and race uplift. Kachun demonstrates that, even as these annual rituals helped define African Americans as a people by fostering a sense of shared history, heritage, and identity, they were also sites of ambiguity and conflict. Freedom celebrations served as occasions for debate over black representations in the public sphere, struggles for group leadership, and contests over collective memory and its meaning. Based on extensive research in African American newspapers and oration texts, this book retraces a vital if often overlooked tradition in African American political culture and addresses important issues about black participation in the public sphere. By illuminating the origins of black Americans' public commemorations, it also helps explain why there have been increasing calls in recent years to make the "Juneteenth" observance of emancipation an American -- not just an African American -- day of commemoration.

Book Celebrating Freedom

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Yood
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 118 pages

Download or read book Celebrating Freedom written by James Yood and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the American Revolution to the Algerian War of Independence, from the civil rights movement to Tiananmen Square, freedom has driven men and women to commit great and tragic acts. 12151791, the arresting centerpiece sculpture of the newly opened McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum, powerfully embodies the passions engendered by this simple yet potent idea. Celebrating Freedom marks that power, as it explores how 12151791 and the Freedom Museum will transform the way we view our liberties today. Created by California artists Amy Larimer and Peter Bernheim, 12151791 is the numeric iteration of December 15, 1791, the day that the Bill of Rights was ratified and became part of the Constitution of the United States. A commanding presence in the museum's entrance hall, 12151791 spirals downward as a tower of suspended steel plates and wire, with 850 engraved quotes woven through it that reflect on the importance of freedom. Drawn from poems, letters, songs, legal documents, and other cultural artifacts, these voices span the landscape of American history, from the first European explorers to the present day. Celebrating Freedom features vibrant color images of the sculpture, as well as striking photographs that capture historic moments when people assembled to protest, pray, report, and petition. Art historian James Yood declares in his essay that 12151791 "is visual and textual, accessible and elusive, solid and transparent, stable and in motion, historical and contemporary." The essential guide to a groundbreaking cultural landmark, Celebrating Freedom reveals the value of freedoms past, present, and future.
