Book 300 Years of the French in Old Mines

Download or read book 300 Years of the French in Old Mines written by Mark G. Boyer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The village of Old Mines is the oldest settlement in the state of Missouri. Lead miners were in Old Mines as early as 1719. The founding of Old Mines in 1723 coincides with the land grant awarded to Philippe Francois Renault by French authorities on June 26, 1723, to mine lead. Thus, the oldest village in Missouri began as a mining town. In 2023, the village marks three hundred years of the French in Old Mines. This book narrates the history of people in remote Louisiana and how they have kept alive a French heritage of culture and customs. The history of Old Mines is tightly bound to the Catholic faith the French settlers brought with them, the parish they founded, and the church, schools, rectories, and convents they built. The decade of the 2020s is filled with over twenty anniversaries to be marked and celebrated in the oldest mining town in Missouri, itself marking its Bicentennial in 2021. This is not a scholarly writing of history; it is a thirty-chapter narrative, grounded in research, of the continual presence of the French in Old Mines for three hundred years.

Book Ten Generations

Download or read book Ten Generations written by David More and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TEN GENERATIONS is a family saga that follows the Watt family, generation by generation, from Edinburgh in the late 1500s to colonial New York, through the American Revolution, back to the Channel Islands, and then to Canada, where the family settles in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The family rises to prominence in Edinburgh, then emigrates to colonial New York in the early 1700s. There, they are at the pinnacle of society, but are torn apart by Revolution and war. Forced into exile in Britain, the descendants of one branch return to the continent and settle near Montreal, where they once again become important in the cultural and political life of Quebec and Canada in the 1800s and 1900s. The author uses primary source materials such as personal letters, anecdotes, and illustrations from family collections and fits these expertly into the historical context of the times to provide a dramatic, readable and entertaining account of the family's history -- of fortunes made and lost, of war and revolution, of personal tragedy and triumph. Ten Generations provides an intriguing personal window into the real history of the times and into the lives of this interesting family.

Fehrenbach Award, Texas Historical Commission, 2004 Since the early 1700s, women of Spanish/Mexican origin or descent have played a central, if often unacknowledged, role in Texas history. Tejanas have been community builders, political and religious leaders, founders of organizations, committed trade unionists, innovative educators, astute businesswomen, experienced professionals, and highly original artists. Giving their achievements the recognition they have long deserved, this groundbreaking book is at once a general history and a celebration of Tejanas' contributions to Texas over three centuries. The authors have gathered and distilled a wide range of information to create this important resource. They offer one of the first detailed accounts of Tejanas' lives in the colonial period and from the Republic of Texas up to 1900. Drawing on the fuller documentation that exists for the twentieth century, they also examine many aspects of the modern Tejana experience, including Tejanas' contributions to education, business and the professions, faith and community, politics, and the arts. A large selection of photographs, a historical timeline, and profiles of fifty notable Tejanas complete the volume and assure its usefulness for a broad general audience, as well as for educators and historians.

She ruled over Egypt from 51 BC until her death in 30 BC, and was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic dynasty. Cleopatra was the daughter of Ptolemy XII Auletes, and she became queen at the age of 18. During her time as queen, she had relationships with two of the most powerful men in ancient Rome: Julius Caesar and Mark Antony. Her involvement with these two men led to her downfall and ultimately, her death. Cleopatra was known for her intellectual curiosity and her ability to speak multiple languages. She was also a skilled diplomat, and was able to maintain her power by forming alliances and negotiating with other leaders. Her reign saw the growth of Egypt's economy and a resurgence of its cultural and artistic traditions. Cleopatra was also a patron of the arts, and was known for her love of music, poetry, and literature. Despite her many accomplishments, she was viewed by many of her contemporaries as a dangerous woman who used her beauty and intelligence to manipulate those around her.
