Book Celebrated Criminal Cases of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Celebrated Criminal Cases of America Classic Reprint written by Thomas Samuel Duke and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebrated Criminal Cases of America The hundred and ten cases presented in this volume should prove interesting to the general reader because of the psycho logical and, in many cases, the historical interest which attaches to them. This book also contains a brief history of the San Fran cisco Police' Department from the date of its organization; an accurate history of the far-famed Vigilance Committee; the Kearney riots; the life of Chief Justice Terry, including the famous duel in which he killed United States Senator Broder ick and his tragic death while assaulting Justice Field of the United States Supreme Court; also a synopsis of the police and municipal history of the great earthquake and fire, which contains much information which has not heretofore been published. While this volume will show that in some instances fabu lous amounts of money have been unlawfully obtained, it will also show that retribution invariably overtakes the professional criminal and brings with it untold misery and degradation. Although there are isolated cases where the perpetrator of an atrocious crime succeeds in escaping the iron hand of the law, there is one court he cannot escape, and that is the one whose findings are incontrovertible and whose sessions are held in the chambers of his own breast. The dread of discovery is constantly with him by day and by night, and who can doubt but that he finally concludes that even an ignominious death on a scaffold would be preferable to such a miserable existence. Book Celebrated Crimes Vol 6 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Celebrated Crimes Vol 6 Classic Reprint written by Alexandre Dumas and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebrated Crimes, Vol. 6 This great movement was in no sense planned or carried out by him. He foresaw it, but never sought to help it forward, and there was no we when it would have been possible for him to check it. He was not one of those men who devote their whole lives to the service of a cause, and all that he did was done to acquire and augment a power of which he was at once the architect and the beneficiary. He never could see anything but himself in the whole universe, he loved none but himself, and worked for none but himself. He bore in his heart the seed of all the passions, and devoted his whole life to their development and gratification. His character is sufficiently described in that statement and his actions were simply the natural consequences of his character try ing conclusions with circumstances. Few men have been more thoroughly consistent, or better suited to the atmos phere in which they lived; and as a personality is the more striking, the more completely it sums up in iwelf the ideas and morals of the time and country in which its possessor lived, the figure of ali-pacha is certainly one of the most interesting if not of the most brilliant in contemporary history. Book Celebrated Trials of All Countries

Download or read book Celebrated Trials of All Countries written by J. Jay Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebrated Trials of All Countries: And Remarkable Cases of Criminal Jurisprudence It is believed that the collection supplies a striking deficiency in the library of the lawyer, physician, and, general reader. Much care and caution have been exercised in the compilation, to make it not only an acceptable but a necessary adjunct to the books already accessible, and the reader is confidently referred to the table of contents for the evidence of the variety and value of the materials. Should this work meet with public approbation, it is the design of the publishers to issue other volumes in succession, for which the most ample matter has been accumulated to this end many distinguished jurists have voluntarily offered to contribute the most remarkable cases which have come under their observa tion. The present may therefore be considered an avant courier of much that deeply concerns the American reader. No expense will be spared in completing a design having for its object the preservation of separate trials, which, by being scattered in every possible shape, are too often entirely lost, or of difficult access. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famous Crimes the World Forgot Volume II uncovers more amazing true crimes that exploded into the national news, shocking Americans from coast to coast-crimes that were eventually forgotten-until now. Each one of these stories transports you back to the time they happened, propels you through all the suspense-filled developments, and explores each one with an in-depth look into the actions of humans so evil, it's hard to believe they were real. They include: a serial poisoner who laughed when thought he got away with murdering a brother and sister, but cried when he was arrested; a woman with a history of being robbed by two men until the third time it happened when they killed her husband, or so she said; a mail-order bride lured to her death 3,000 miles away by a man with a wife and five children; a serial-rapist and possible serial-killer who murdered two sisters on their way to church; a five-time loser turned drifter who gunned down four men for $40 inside a hermit's shack; an escaped convict turned serial-killer with a taste for red-heads; the mysterious car bomb murder of a wealthy Texas socialite which churned up a cast of sordid characters who captivated an audience for what was America's first live-televised murder trial; and Milwaukee's first serial-killer who stabbed young girls with a seven-inch stiletto.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survivors Tales of Famous Crimes Many volumes are in existence which deal entirely with records of crime, but I believe that none amongst them is composed solely of narratives related by persons who were actually associated with famous criminal cases. Personal records have a peculiar fascination and interest, because they bring us into intimate touch with the subject dealt with; and such stories have an added attraction when they relate to murder mysteries, for they involve the most violent passions of human nature - love, hatred, lust, and greed of gold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Forty Years: Being an Account at First Hand of Some Famous Criminal Lunacy Cases, English and American, Together With Facsimile Letters, Notes, and Other Data Concerning Them Although I have breathed the atmosphere of lunacy for a period extending over sixty years, and can there fore chronicle events dating from that period, the real tragedy Of my life, -if I may use this expression, -com menced from the year of my qualification in 1869 thus am I able to give a forty years' record of practical knowledge Of lunacy. Every legal case mentioned by me became public property at the time of the trial. Certain facts, however, I have given in connection with these which have never previously seen the light of day. I have been careful to avoid all mention of treatment, the book being entirely one Of a social nature and not a professional record. I have endeav oured to express my views fairly but unflinchingly on public matters, and only to condemn where I think such condemnation was well deserved. The book is written for the world at large; but at the same time I have no doubt in my own mind that many of my own profession will benefit by the perusal of its pages, as there are certain lessons to be learnt therein. Download or read book Unprepared To Die written by Paul Slade and published by Soundcheck Books. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gory Stories Behind The Murder Ballads Cheerfully vulgar, revelling in gore, and always with an eye on the main chance, murder ballads are tabloid newspapers set to music, carrying word of the latest ‘orrible murders to an insatiable public. Victims are bludgeoned, stabbed or shot in every verse and killers often hanged, but the songs themselves never die. Instead, they mutate – morphing to suit local place names as they criss cross the Atlantic and continue to fascinate each generation’s biggest musical stars. Paul Slade traces this fascinating genre’s history through eight of its greatest songs. Stagger Lee’s “biographers” alone include Duke Ellington, James Brown, Bob Dylan, Dr John, The Clash and Nick Cave. No two tell his story in quite the same way. Covering eight classic murder ballads, including “Knoxville Girl”, “Tom Dooley” and “Frankie & Johnny”, Slade investigates the real-life murder which inspired each song and traces its musical development down the decades. Billy Bragg, The Bad Seeds’ Mick Harvey, Laura Cantrell, Rennie Sparks of The Handsome Family and a host of other leading musicians add their own insights.
