This book was released on 2013-06-16 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi- Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi is his full name but Mevlana is his popular name known in his homeland, Konya-Turkey. In the English-speaking world, however, he is popularly known as Rumi. He lived in the 13th century, 1207 - 1273.The day he died is known by all in the Sufi world as Sheb-iArus, the wedding night, the night he met his Beloved. It is a well-known legend that he said these words:"Do not cry after me.Tonight it is my wedding night.I am going to the Beloved."Rumi had many titles such as poet, jurist and theologian but he is most well-known as a Sufi mystic. In the Sufi world it is also known that he became who he is after being the disciple of Sems-I Tebrizi, another famous Sufi mystic.Rumi was a well-educated and a learned scholar loved by all but after meeting Sems he went through a change by tasting the real love of God which is the basis of Sufism. This ecstatic love turned him from an accomplished teacher and jurist into an ascetic. Rumi believed love and longing for God is the only path for reaching God. For true seekers of God, love is their only religion. The truth and love vibrating through his work made him heard by people all around the world over the past seven centuries. His teachings are so universal that his poems can be heard in churches, synagogues, Zen monasteries, and in art/performance/music scenes.Rumi's works are originally written in Persian and have been translated into several languages. In 2007, he was described as, "The most popular poet in America."His works advocate unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness, charity, and awareness through love. For him, all religions have the same value and he looks with the same eye on Muslim, Jew and Christian alike. His peaceful, tolerant teaching has appealed to people of all sects and creeds. With his work and life-style, Rumi tried to spread the idea that people of all religions and backgrounds can live together in peace and harmony. His visions, words, and life teach us how to reach inner peace and happiness. The "INNER PEACE AND HAPPINESS" is the most essential thing.Masnavi, which is the source for this selection of work, weaves fables, scenes from everyday life, Qur'anic revelations and exegesis, anecdotes and stories full of secrets of liberation of the soul and enlightenment.Among these selected stories you will find the basis of Sufism and the message it carries out into the world. During the translation process no interpretation is added to the stories. The stories are kept true to the originals but some foot notes are given to clear the meanings under the guidance of a Sufi master. These stories seem to be written for children but they are written for the many (adult) spiritual seekers. If you just read between the lines you will find messages that will help guide you to inner peace and divine love. All readers will love wandering through Rumi's fables and tales of wisdom. No matter what religion, the truth and delight of Rumi's writings penetrates that wordless place of knowing within every great teaching and every longing heart."Knowing God starts with knowing yourself and accepting who you are."

Book Nightingales and Pleasure Gardens

Download or read book Nightingales and Pleasure Gardens written by Talat S. Halman and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest turkish verses, dating from the sixth century A.D., were love lyrics. Since then, love has dominated the Turks’ poetic modes and moods—pre-Islamic, Ottoman, classical, folk, modern. This collection covers love lyrics from all periods of Turkish poetry. It is the first anthology of its kind in English. The translations, faithful to the originals, possess a special freshness in style and sensibility. Here are lyrics from pre-Islamic Central Asia, passages from epics, mystical ecstasies of such eminent thirteenth-century figures as Rumi and Yunus Emre, classical poems of the Ottoman Empire (including Süleyman the Magnificent and women court poets), lilting folk poems, and the work of the legendary communist Nazim Hikmet (who is arguably Turkey’s most famous poet internationally), and the greatest living Turkish poet, Fazil Hüsnü Daglarca. The verses in this collection are true to the Turkish spirit as well as universal in their appeal. They show how Turks praise and satirize love, how they see it as a poetic experience. Poetry was for many centuries the premier Turkish genre and love its predominant theme. Some of the best expressions produced by Turkish poets over a period of fifteen centuries can be found in this volume.

Book excerpt: The Masnavi, written by Mawlana Jalal Al-Din Muhammad Rumi at age 54 in 1258 until his death in 1273, is one of the most famous and best-loved Sufi texts ever written. Comprised of six books and over 25,000 verses, The Masnavi is a collection of poems and stories that teaches Sufis how to reach their Union with God. Rumi described the book as "the roots of the roots of the roots of the Faith." Filled to the brim with stories, anecdotes, lessons, and beautiful poetry, this version of The Masnavi contains the six books abridged, and was translated by E.H. Whinfield in 1898. JALAL AD-DIN MUHAMMAD RUMI (1207-1273) was a Persian Muslim theologian, poet, jurist, and Sufi mystic who taught peace between all religions, promoting tolerance and harmony. Born in the village of Wakhsh in greater Balkh (now Tajikistan), Rumi lived out most of his life in the Anatolian city of Konya. After his father's death, Rumi became the head of a madrassa, or religious school, and continued to learn and preach his father's mystical doctrines. Rumi taught that man had been separated from God, but his greatest desire was to reach God once more through music, dance, poetry and art, all of which is reflected in his many writings. His most famous work is the Matanwiye Manawi, or Spiritual Couplets, regarded by many as the Persian Qu'ran. Rumi's grave is still a place of pilgrimage in present-day Turkey.

Book excerpt: Follow a Michigan town from the time families from New York and Pennsylvania settled Potawatomi land in the 1830s to the Civil War. Cameron flourished as a farm market while Michigan grew rich on lumber. Local industries expanded when Detroit built automobiles, stoves and refrigerators. The diverse community suffered when conglomerates bought the plants, laid off workers, and then moved production to Mexico. Camerons history is the story of people who moved west or north, spent a few years or a few generations, then moved on. Potawatomi are now in Oklahoma and Kansas. Peabodys and Fitches were replaced by Germans and Dutch who remigrated from the Delaware river valley. Then came immigrants from Pomerania and Bavaria, followed by Italians and Ukrainians, then refugees from the Balkans and Baltics. Later, Blacks moved from Pensacola and Spanish speakers from Brownsville. Today, doctors arrive from India. Cameron, a microcosm of Michigan and Midwestern history. A special place, an anyplace that could be your hometown, your family.
