Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cecile, Vol. 1 of 3: Or Modern Idolaters I don't allow it, ' retorted Slane (he never did allow anything, and was invariably in opposition to his companion of the hour). Civilisation advances, bosh! The ancients had all we have, exceeded us in virtue, eclipsed us in vice. What can you claim for us? I give you the electric telegraph and railways; the latter the ancients no doubt would have had, but they foresaw the inconvenience that would arise from them, a fact we are slowly opening our eyes to. It's no use going anywhere now, you can't see anything when you get there for the crowd. The Derby is a dream of the past, a thing to read of in the papers, not see. Telegraphs the same. Download or read book Stinky Cecil in Operation Pond Rescue written by Paige Braddock and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes big stories happen in small places. Sometimes big things happen to small creatures. This is one of those stories . . . Cecil is a toad. A toad busy doing what any other toad does with its days--judging the pond splashing contest (Reggie the fly is usually the honorary winner by dint of his five-day lifespan), or visiting his friends, Jeff the free-range hamster, Rayray the lizard, Jeremy the worm, or Sprout the frog. And, of course, trying to keep clear of the local hawk. But when Cecil discovers a freeway construction project aimed right at the pond, he knows he has to come up with a plan to save his home. But what can a small group of amphibians and a reincarnating fly do against construction vehicles and a steady onslaught of hot asphalt? Cecil isn't sure, but he knows they have to try.

Download or read book The Poetic Works of Cecil A Phillips Sr Volume 1 written by Cecil A Phillips Sr and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Words From My Heart Poetry not only comes from the heart, it also emanates from the inner most confines of one's soul. They are a magical force that can express what is sometimes hard to say when it involves things that cannot be seen, or intricate feelings that are internally kept. They can even make an unheard thought or hidden feeling visible. Poetry can be intimate and passionate, joyful and sad, even spiritual and inspiring. But whether good or bad, they can make you realize that when it comes to affairs of the heart, no one is ever singled out. Love is essential in our lives and the key to true happiness is learning how to love yourself. When you have truly learned that lesson, only then will you be able to learn how to love and appreciate someone else. The Poetic Works of Cecil A. Phillips Sr. contains some of my best works to date, and were written from the heart with love in mind. I hope its content will touch every reader's heart and help them to understand that everyone who falls in love sometimes get hurt and that it isn't love that causes the heart to break, instead, it is love that will heal a broken heart.-Cecil A. Phillips Sr.

Download or read book Lord Robert Cecil written by Gaynor Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawyer, politician, diplomat and leading architect of the League of Nations; Robert Cecil, 1st Viscount Cecil of Chelwood, was one of Britain's most significant statesmen of the twentieth century. His views on international diplomacy cover the most important aspects of British, European and American foreign policy concerns of the century, including the origins and consequences of the two world wars, the disarmament movement, the origins and early course of the Cold War and the first steps towards European integration. His experience of the First World War and the huge loss of life it entailed provoked Cecil to spend his life championing the ethos behind and work of the League of Nations: a role for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1937. Yet despite his prominence in the international peace movement, Cecil has never been the focus of an academic biography. Cecil has perhaps been judged unfairly due to his association with the League of Nations, which has since been generally regarded as a failure. However, recent academic research has highlighted the contribution of the League to the creation of many of the institutions and precepts that have, since the Second World War, become accepted parts of the international system, not least the United Nations. In particular, Cecil and his work on arms control lay the basis for understanding this new area of international activity, which would bear fruit during the Cold War and after. Through an evaluation of Cecil's political career, the book also assesses his reputation as an idealist and the extent to which he had a coherent philosophy of international relations. This book suggests that in reality Cecil was a Realpolitiker pragmatist whose attitudes evolved during two key periods: the interwar period and the Cold War. It also proposes that where a coherent philosophy was in evidence, it owed as much to the moral and political code of the Cecil family as to his own experiences in politics. Cecil's social and familial world is therefore considered alongside his more public life.
