A large proportion of this has come from the improvement in VLSI techniques, offering one to two orders of magnitude more devices than previously possible. A second contributing factor in the fast development of the subject is commercialization. The supercomputer is no longer restricted to a few well-established research institutions and large companies. A new computer breed combining the architectural advantages of the supercomputer with the advance of VLSI technology is now available at very attractive prices. A pioneering device in this development is the transputer, a VLSI processor specifically designed to operate in large concurrent systems. Parallel Computers 2: Architecture, Programming and Algorithms reflects the shift in emphasis of parallel computing and tracks the development of supercomputers in the years since the first edition was published. It looks at large-scale parallelism as found in transputer ensembles. This extensively rewritten second edition includes major new sections on the transputer and the OCCAM language. Approximately 125 participants from North America and Europe attended each of the three symposia. The Institute for Computational Studies at Colorado State University hosted the first symposium at Fort Collins, Colorado, August 12-13, 1982. The second annual symposium took place in Lanham, Maryland, and was hosted by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This volume contains the proceedings of the Supercomputer Applications symposium held October 31-November 1, 1984, at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. The purpose of this volume is to provide a forum for users of Control Data's CYBER 205 supercomputer to exchange common experiences and to discuss results of research projects performed on the computer. The unifying theme across the many disciplines is the development of methods and techniques to exploit the computational power of the CYBER 205. Some what surprisingly, these techniques are quite similar and apply to a wide range of problems in physics, chemistry, and engineering.

The principal aim of these workshops is to present the state-of-the-art in scientific large scale and high speed computation. Computational science has developed into a third methodology equally important now as its theoretical and experimental companions. Gradually academic researchers acquired access to a variety of supercomputers and as a consequence computational science has become a major tool for their work. It is a pleasure to thank the Belgian National Science Foundation (NFWO-FNRS) and the Ministry of Scientific Affairs for sponsoring the workshop. Book excerpt: This book is a direct result of the NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Banyuls-sur-mer, France, June 1985. The Institute had the same title as this book. It was held at Laboratoire Arago. Eighty lecturers and students from almost all NATO countries attended. The purpose was to review the state of the art of physical oceanographic numerical modelling including the parameterization of physical processes. This book represents a cross-section of the lectures presented at the ASI. It covers elementary mathematical aspects through large scale practical aspects of ocean circulation calculations. It does not encompass every facet of the science of oceanographic modelling. We have, however, captured most of the essence of mesoscale and large-scale ocean modelling for blue water and shallow seas. There have been considerable advances in modelling coastal circulation which are not included. The methods section does not include important material on phase and group velocity errors, selection of grid structures, advanced methods to conservation in highly nonlinear systems, inverse methods and other important ideas for modern ocean modelling. Hopefully, this book will provide a foundation of knowledge to support the growth of this emergent field of science. The NATO Advanced Study Institute was supported by many organi zations. Therefore, the largest computers available, i.e., the "supercomputers", have usually been acquired by the national meteorological services long before they were used in other fields of research or business. Since the available technology limits the speed of any single computer, parallel computations have become necessary to achieve further improvements in the number of results produced per time unit. This book collects the papers presented at two workshops held at ECMWF on the topic of parallel processing in meteorological models. It provides an insight into the state-of-the-art in using parallel processors operationally and allows extrapolation to other time-critical applications. It also shows trends in migrating to massive parallel systems in the near future.

It is the second volume on Control Data computers. It is focused on the Control Data Corporation’s supercomputer systems which brought to maturity the design principles espoused by Seymour Cray. Later systems, after Cray left CDC, continued the development of families of supercomputers through the mid-1990s. CDC developed and sold supercomputers – some of the fastest machines for over 25 years – for scientific and engineering organizations. CDC’s supercomputer systems continued to be minimalist in their instruction sets, almost RISC-like in some senses. This volume covers CDC supercomputer systems through the demise of CDC as the Cold War ended, describes their system software, their effect on programming language designs, and key applications. As such, this volume strives to bring together a comprehensive, but not exhaustive, view of the capabilities of CDC supercomputer systems.
