Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caxton's Eneydos, 1490: Englisht From the French Liure Des Eneydes, 1483 This curious little book was printed by Caxton, and specially dedicated to Prince Arthur, eldest son of King Henry VII. It is a translation into English by Caxton himself of a French version of the Aeneid, ' and is a folio, as usual without any title-page but Caxton in his colophon at the end gives the date of the translation as June 22ud, 1490, that being probably the period at which he completed it. There are, according to Mr. Blades in his Biography and Typography of William Caxton, ' eighteen or nineteen copies extant, of which three are in the British Museum, three at St. J ohn's College, Oxford, one at Trinity College, Cambridge, one in the Hunterian Library, Glasgow, and the rest in private libraries. The first and eighth leaves out of a total of eighty-six are blank, but the first is not reckoned in the signature, and the Prologue begins on the second, signed at. The lines are spaced to an even length, measuring four and three-quarter inches, and thirty-one go to a full page. N 0 other edition is known. Caxton englisht his Eneydos either from the French lime des eneydes printed at Lyons by Guillaume Le Roy on Sept. 30, 1483, or from a more correct ms. Of it. A fairly full collation of Mr. Alfred Buth'e copy of the French print has been made by Dr. Furnivall - misprints and all - and will be found at p. 188-214 below. Book English Humanism and the Reception of Virgil C 1400 1550

Download or read book English Humanism and the Reception of Virgil C 1400 1550 written by Matthew Day and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Humanism and the Reception of Virgil c. 1400-1550 reassesses how the spread of Renaissance humanism in England impacted the reception of Virgil. It begins with the first signs of humanist influence in the fifteenth century, and ends at the height of the English Renaissance during the mid-Tudor period. This period witnessed the first extant English translations of Virgil's Aeneid, by William Caxton (1490), Gavin Douglas (1513), and the Earl of Surrey (c. 1543). It also marked the first printings of Virgil's works in England by Richard Pynson (c. 1515) and Wynkyn de Worde (1510s-1520s). Through a fine-grained analysis of surviving manuscripts and early printed editions, Matthew Day questions how and to what extent Renaissance humanism impacted readers' and translators' approaches to Virgil. Building on current scholarship in the fields of book history, classical reception, and translation studies, it draws attention to substantial continuities between the medieval and humanist reception of Virgil's works. Humanist study of Virgil, and indeed of classical poetry more generally, continued to draw many of its aims, methods, and conventions from well-established medieval traditions of learning. In emphasizing the very gradual pace of humanist development and the continuous influence of medieval scholarship, the book comes to a more qualified view of how humanism did and (just as importantly) did not affect Virgilian reading and translation. While recognizing humanist innovations and discoveries, it gives due attention to the understudied, yet far more numerous examples of consistency and traditionalism.

Book English in Print from Caxton to Shakespeare to Milton

Download or read book English in Print from Caxton to Shakespeare to Milton written by Valerie Hotchkiss and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English in Print from Caxton to Shakespeare to Milton examines the history of early English books, exploring the concept of putting the English language into print with close study of the texts, the formats, the audiences, and the functions of English books. Lavishly illustrated with more than 130 full-color images of stunning rare books, this volume investigates a full range of issues regarding the dissemination of English language and culture through printed works, including the standardization of typography, grammar, and spelling; the appearance of popular literature; and the development of school grammars and dictionaries. Valerie Hotchkiss and Fred C. Robinson provide engaging descriptions of more than a hundred early English books drawn from the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the Elizabethan Club of Yale University. The study nearly mirrors the chronological coverage of Pollard and Redgrave's famous Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640), beginning with William Caxton, England's first printer, and ending with John Milton, the English language's most eloquent defender of the freedom of the press in his Areopagitica of 1644. William Shakespeare, neither a printer nor a writer much concerned with publishing his own plays, nonetheless deserves his central place in this study because Shakespeare imprints, and Renaissance drama in general, provide a fascinating window on the world of English printing in the period between Caxton and Milton.
