Book Weakly Interacting Molecular Pairs Unconventional Absorbers of Radiation in the Atmosphere

Download or read book Weakly Interacting Molecular Pairs Unconventional Absorbers of Radiation in the Atmosphere written by Claude Camy-Peyret and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Research Workshop entitled “Weakly Interacting Molecular Pairs: Unconventional Absorbers of Radiation in the At- sphere” was held in Abbaye de Fontevraud, France, from April 29 to May 3, 2002. The meeting involved 40 researchers from 14 countries. The goal of this meeting was to address a problem that the scienti?c community is aware of for many years. Up now, however, the so- tion for this problem is far from satisfactory. Pair e?ects are called unconventional in the title of this meeting. In speci?c spectral domains and/or geophysical conditions they are recognized to play a dominant role in the absorption/emission properties of the atmosphere. Water vapor continuum absorption is among the most prominent examples. Permanently improving accuracy of both laboratory studies and ?eld observations requires better knowledge of the spectroscopic features - tributable to molecular pairs which may form at equilibrium. The Workshop was targeted both to clarify the pending questions and, as far as feasible, to trace the path to possible answers since the underlying phenomena are yet incompletely understood and since a reliable theory is often not available. On the other hand, the lack of precise laboratory data on bimolecular absorption is often precluding the construction of reliable theoretical models. Ideally, the knowledge accumulated in the course of laboratory studies should correlate with the practical demands from those who are carrying out atmospheric ?eld measurements and space observations.

Book High Sensitivity Absorption Spectroscopy of Molecules of Atmospheric Interest

Download or read book High Sensitivity Absorption Spectroscopy of Molecules of Atmospheric Interest written by Yun Ding and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is devoted to the recording and anlysis of highly excited vibrational state of molecules of atmospheric interest with several high sensitive absorption techniques : intracavity laser absorption spectrometry (ICLAS) based on a Vertical External Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VeCSEL) near 1 æm, Fourier transform spectroscopy and cw-Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy in the mid-infrared region. For 13CO2, the rotational analysis and vibrational assignments of the observed upper states have been performed on the basis of predictions of the effective Hamiltonian. New global fittings of the line positions of by gathering the present line positions with prévious measurements were performed for 13C16O2 and 16O13C18O. The parameters of the reduced effective Hamiltonian were derived. Line intensities of seven 13C16O2 bands were also recorded. The vibrational structure of SiHCI3 and rotational analysis of other molecules (H70GeD3, DOCI and H2S) are also presented. Their rovibrational parameters are obtained and strong interactions are evidenced and analized for most of the studied bands.

Book Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy in Nitrogen oxygen Mixtures in the Presence of Alpha Radiation

Download or read book Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy in Nitrogen oxygen Mixtures in the Presence of Alpha Radiation written by Sidney John Gautrau and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was part of an effort to experimentally validate computational models under development for radiation-induced atmospheric effects. Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy (CRDS) was used to measure the concentration of chemical products generated as a result of radiation interactions in a controlled atmosphere. Experiments were conducted in a vacuum chamber interfaced with a gas introduction system that controlled the initial atmospheric composition. A quadrupole mass spectrometer and tunable dye laser were integrated to confirm initial atmospheric composition, and provide wavelength flexibility for detecting a variety of chemical products generated by radiation interactions. CRDS measurements were made for ozone production resulting from alpha radiation interactions in nitrogen-oxygen mixtures while the Polonium 210 alpha sources were cycled between being shielded and exposed. The beginning of this thesis will provide brief reviews of ionizing radiation and ozone formation, along with explanations of Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy and CRDS. This is followed by a description of the existing vacuum and optical system, as well as the modifications required to integrate the mass spectrometer and dye laser. Another chapter details the modifications made to the existing software, as well as new software developed for the mass spectrometer and dye laser. Finally, results are presented showing the rapid production of ozone following exposure of the alpha radiation to the controlled atmosphere. Results also show ozone concentrations rapidly decreasing when the source was re-shielded, but when the source was re-exposed, the ozone concentration started at the previous concentration and continued to increase. This indicates the presence of a possible ozone catalyst. --Page ii.
