Book excerpt: This dissertation provides a grammatical description and sociohistorical account of the Cavite variety of Philippine Creole Spanish (PCS), also known as Cavite Chabacano (CC); and analyzes how this language informs standard typological characterizations of contact languages. CC is one of three surviving varieties of Chabacano, a Spanish-lexified contact language of the Philippines. The unique status of Chabacano as the only Spanish-lexified creole in Asia presents a number of typological challenges to standard views of colonial contact languages based on prototypical plantation creoles. Most work on Chabacano assumes that it is a creole language, and only a few recent works on the Zamboanga variety of Chabacano have questioned this classification. The current work reexamines the status of Chabacano as a creole language by providing linguistic data from an understudied Chabacano variety and examining it from a typological perspective. On the descriptive front, the dissertation provides a sketch grammar that constitutes the most complete description of the language to this date. The linguistic description is supplemented with a sociohistorical reconstruction that proposes different stages in the development of CC: an initial period of koineization, a period of hispanization or ‘decreolization’, and a latter period in which more Tagalog forms were incorporated from the adstrate. Comparative linguistic evidence from CC and two other Chabacano varieties supports this account. The latter part of the dissertation evaluates the CC using typological accounts of contact languages. It is argued that the language poses two main challenges to previous models of language contact outcomes; first, it shows continuity between the lexifier and the creole, and second, it shows that the language's classification into a category such as koiné or creole may shift during the development of the language. A model of radial categories (Lakoff 1987) is suggested as an alternative to more restrictive categorizations of language contact outcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cavite Chabacano is one of the Philippine Creole Spanish varieties that emerged during the Spanish colonial occupation of the Philippines. It is a Spanish-lexified, Tagalog-substrate contact language spoken in Cavite City in the Manila Bay region. An evaluation conducted by Lesho and Sippola (2013) using the UNESCO framework for assessing language vitality indicates that the creole variety is critically endangered. The number of Cavite Chabacano speakers is currently in decline due to the position of Tagalog being the majority language in Cavite City. Pronominal variation in the speech of Cavite Chabacano speakers and language shift from Cavite Chabacano to Tagalog in Cavite City are explored in this dissertation. That said, the objective of this dissertation is multifaceted. First, it presents support to theoretical claims on codeswitching as a socially motivated act. Second, it assesses the role of codeswitching in language shift. In particular, it investigates Matrix Language turnover hypothesis by Myers-Scotton (1998), which puts forward that intrasentential codeswitching may cause language shift. Third, it provides an assessment of the degree of language shift within the community, and the speakers' attitudes towards the languages spoken within it and towards codeswitching. Fourth, it documents a critically endangered creole variety. Variationist analysis of recorded dyadic conversations between speakers of Cavite Chabacano and quantitative analysis of their language use and attitudes using a survey questionnaire were employed to carry out this work. The results show that the social factor groups of age, topic of conversation, education, and language use at work; and linguistic factor groups of number, and person are found to be significant in the pronominal variation in Cavite Chabacano. Although the use of Tagalog pronouns in Cavite Chabacano is at a low rate, the significant variables in these factor groups suggest that Cavite Chabacano is converging to Tagalog. In addition, the results indicate that although speakers have a positive attitude towards the creole variety, it shows to be of no aid in maintaining it. Notwithstanding, speakers deem that learning the creole variety is valuable and that it should be a requirement in the school curriculum.

It is the common name for the six dialects of what is formally known in Linguistics as Philippine Creole Spanish. The word "Chavacano" is derived from the Spanish language meaning "poor taste," "vulgar," "common," "of low quality," "tacky," or "coarse." The Chavacano language is the only Spanish-based creole in Asia. It has survived for more than 400 years, making it one of the oldest creole languages in the world. It is the only language to have developed in the Philippines (a member of Philippine languages) which does not belong to the family of Austronesian languages, although it shows a characteristic common to the sub-classification of Malayo-Polynesian languages, the reduplication. This creole has six dialects. Their classification is based on their substrate languages and the regions where they are commonly spoken. The three known dialects of Chabacano which have Tagalog as their substrate language are the Luzon-based creoles of which are Caviteno (spoken in Cavite City), Ternateno (spoken in Ternate, Cavite) and Ermiteno (once spoken in the old district of Ermita in Manila and is now extinct). Zambongueno Chavacano emanated from Caviteno Chavacano as evidenced by prominent Zambongueno families who descended from Spanish Army officers, primarily Caviteno mestizos, stationed at Fort Pilar in the 19th century.
