Book excerpt: We are pleased to present our readers the Proceedings of the International Symposium "New Perspectives in Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Arteriovenous Hemofiltration, and Plasma pheresis" which was held in Freiburg i. Br. (FRG) during Oct tober 6-8, 1988. The meeting was held on the occasion of opening the new dialysis unit of the University Hospital of Freiburg i. Br .. The topics discussed included membrane biocompatibility, catabolic factors associated with dialysis therapy, phar macological therapy in dialyzed patients, erythropoietin and renal anemia, new developments in CAVH, CAPD and plasmapheresis, renal replacement therapy in acute renal failure, and plasmapheresis therapy in systemic diseases. It was unfortunately impossible in this volume, to include the extended, lively and stimulating discussions which were enjoyed by the participants during the conference. The meeting has provided an unique framework for close interaction between scientists from various disciplines, including nephrology, pharmacology, hematology, cardiology, anesthesiology, surgery, intensive care medicine, and patho logy. We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for all those who have stimulated, encouraged and supported us to hold the symposium in Freiburg. Book Acute Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy

Download or read book Acute Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy written by Emil P. Paganini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial observations of dialytic support were brought from the laboratory and confined to patients with reversible acute renal failure. The thought at that time was one of short term maintenance. It was theorized that removal of waste products from the blood, albeit incomplete and inefficient, might allow these patients time to regenerate damaged tubules and regain renal function. After a dis appointing earlier experience in survival, greater sophisti cation and broader practice refined the dialysis skills and reduced mortality. It also became apparent that long periods of support were possible and successful attempts were then made in utilizing this technology in patients with chronic renal failure. These early young patients were a very select group who possessed only renal dysfunction and no other systemic involvement. Nonetheless, they demonstrated a one year survival of only 55-64%. There are presently over 80,000 patients on dialytic support in the United States and over 250,000 patients worldwide dependent on artificial replace ment. Mortality statistics vary but despite a 20-30% systemic disease involvement and a fifth decade average age in the North American experience, the one year survival has risen to apparently 90%.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internists, surgeons, critical care physicians and nephrologists all treat critically ill patients with renal failure and the multiple system organ dysfunction syndrome. A comprehensive review of the state of the art of this topic is definitely needed both in academic and clinical medicine, and Critical Care Nephrology fulfils this need. It is a useful reference tool for both nephrologists and intensive care specialists and it is therefore no coincidence that the editors of the book are themselves specialists in these particular fields. The book addresses the following: definitions of critical illness, epidemiology, monitoring and diagnostic procedures, pathophysiology of organ systems in relation to kidney function, concepts of renal physiologic and pathologic responses to various derangements, oxygen transport and cardiovascular adaptations, hemodynamic parameters, respiratory parameters, mechanical ventilation and cardiac support, and severity score parameters. The book is also devoted to all forms of acute renal failure with specific reference to intensive care patients. The nature of the multiple organ dysfunction syndrome is discussed with special emphasis on the impact of different organs dysfunction and kidney failure. Kidney function and acute renal failure in patients with kidney, liver and heart transplants is also considered, as well as acute illness occurring in chronic hemodialysis patients. Special emphasis is placed on therapeutic interventions and treatment procedures. Different forms of organ support are discussed including liver, lung and cardiac therapy.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the second millenium is distinguished for the increasing interest in the field of critical care medicine, not only among physicians and clinical scientists but also on the part of the mass media. This is an interdisciplinary area of medicine drawing upon the specialties of anesthesiology, internal medicine and surgery, and relying upon the essential contributions and support from basic research. Advances in critical care medicine depend on the application of new technologies to the clinic, the full integration of computers and informatics, the continual training of physicians and technicians, and the consideration of ethical issues in the clinical setting. Within this complex panorama of complementary approaches and viewpoints, it is apparent that critical care medicine is one of the best examples of evidence-based medicine.

Book International Yearbook of Nephrology 1992

Download or read book International Yearbook of Nephrology 1992 written by Vittorio E. Andreucci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1992 International Yearbook of Nephrology is the 4th in a successful series of yearly books updating practising nephrologists and nephrologists-in-training on rapidly changing areas of nephrology. We were encouraged to proceed in our editorial venture by reviews of the previous issues which have appeared in various Nephrology Journals. These reviews have pointed to the successful use of the International Editorial Board, the broad range of topics of current interest which have been covered and the comprehensive and practical nature of the reviews. The principal aim of the Yearbook remains to provide reviews which are more current than those which appear in Nephrology textbooks and which can be in the hands of the readers a few months after the authors have completed the manuscripts. The appointed authors are always experts in the field, who are asked to give an objective review of the topic, up-dating the readers on the world-wide literature and providing them with a complete, accurate and up-ta-date list of important recent references. We have decided to maintain the successful format of the first three issues. Thus, the volume will continue to be divided into sections; each section will continue to have a different primary focus every year, depending upon what is of greatest interest at the time.

Download or read book Arteriovenous Hemofiltration written by Peter Kramer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovery and Relative Importance of Continuous Arteriovenous HemofIltration Lee W. Henderson Continuous arteriovenous hemofiltration (CAVH) has seen a brisk upswing in popularity in Europe since its introduction by Dr. Kramer and colleagues from Gottingen, West Germany in 1977 [1]. In the United States, the technique re ceived approval as a clinical tool from the Food and Drug Administration in April 1982. This approval flowed, in no small measure, from the extensive expe rience reported from Europe and in particular West Germany [e. g., 2, 3]. Reports of its clinical utility now have begun to appear in the United States [4]. Removal of excess total body water using synthetic membranes in an extracor poreal circuit dates back to the work of Alwall and the artificial kidney that he designed which permitted utilization of a hydrostatic pressure gradient to moti vate water flow across the membrane [5]. Kolffs original rotating drum with its unencased membrane required an osmotic driving force [6]. Hemofiltration, the use of the filtration process to remove uremic solutes with the artificial kidney, in analogy with the glomerulus, was reported in 1967 [7]. This was made possible by the availability of synthetic membranes with far higher hydraulic permeability (approximately 10 times higher) than conventionally used cellulosic hemodialysis membrane. Specific applications of these "high flux" membranes to the removal primarily of excess total body water followed shortly thereafter [8].

Book Acute Renal Failure In Practice

Download or read book Acute Renal Failure In Practice written by Andrew R Allen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-11-12 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acute Renal Failure in Practice, edited by practising renal physicians, is the essential guide to the clinical management of patients with acute renal failure and its complex, life-threatening metabolic sequelae. This book explains the workings of the normal kidney, illustrates the aetiology and pathophysiology of acute renal disease, and provides practical treatment guidelines relevant to the day-to-day needs of the practising clinician. There is a clear emphasis on the underlying pathogenic mechanisms naturally leading to a full understanding of the rationale behind the recommended treatments. Each chapter is illustrated throughout by coloured tables and diagrams, and incorporates unique easy-to-follow “practice points” algorithms which detail, step-by-step, the precise treatment protocols required to succeed in caring for these complex patients. An entire section is dedicated to dealing with patients who develop acute renal failure in specific hospital settings, such as the labour ward or intensive care unit. Doctors working in a wide range of acute medical specialities frequently encounter patients with acute renal failure and will therefore find this an invaluable clinical handbook./a

Book Continuous Hemofiltration in the Intensive Care Unit

Download or read book Continuous Hemofiltration in the Intensive Care Unit written by Didier Journois and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-09-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemofiltration is now recognised as the optimal therapeutic solution for supplying renal function in patients with acute renal failure associated with poor hemodynamic conditions This situation is often observed in patients with severe impairment in the function of one or several other organs Since its introduction in the intensive care units in the 1970s, hemofiltration has been subject to some major improvements regarding the required material and devices such as catheters, lines, filters, or pumps This progress has been accompanied by a better knowledge of the management of patients undergoing the technique, especially concerning nutritional support, drug administration, control of body temperature, as well as fluid and electrolytes balance or cost control Moreover, some additional beneficial effects of hemofiltration have been recently pointed out, suggesting that this technique could provide more than an already efficient renal support by removing some substances responsible for an exagger
