Book The Siege of Reading

Download or read book The Siege of Reading written by M. C. Barrès-Baker and published by eBooksLib. This book was released on 2004 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 1643 a Parliamentarian army commanded by the Earl of Essex set out to besiege the Royalist stronghold of Reading as a preliminary to attacking Charles I's capital of Oxford. Although the army succeeded in taking Reading, a combination of inadequate supplies, poor weather, epidemic disease and Royalist raids prevented the hoped for advance on Oxford and eventually led to the virtual disintegration of what its commander described as "the bravest Army in Christendom." Using contemporary accounts by eyewitnesses and Parliamentarian and Royalist journalists wherever possible, this book tells the story of the failure of the Earl of Essex's 1643 spring offensive, concentrating in particular on a day-by-day account of the 12-day siege of Reading, now largely forgotten but on which "the eye of the whole kingdom was fixed" in late April 1643. Malcolm Barres-Baker was born in London and educated at Dr. Challoner's Grammar School, Amersham, Wadham College Oxford and King's College London. After spells as a teacher and proofreader he now works for a museum in West London. Although he has written historical articles for several magazines, produced a number of pamphlets on places in the London Borough of Brent and contributed a small box on the Special Operations Executive to a guidebook to Albania, this is his first book. He has been interested in military history since childhood, and in the English Civil War since studying it for 'A' Level between 1974 and 1976.

Book excerpt: The third novel in the New York Times bestselling Thursday Next series is “great fun—especially for those with a literary turn of mind and a taste for offbeat comedy” (The Washington Post Book World). “Delightful . . . the well of Fforde’s imagination is bottomless.”—People “Fforde creates a literary reality that is somewhere amid a triangulation of Douglas Adams, Monty Python, and Miss Marple.”—The Denver Post With the 923rd Annual Bookworld Awards just around the corner and an unknown villain wreaking havoc in Jurisfiction, what could possibly be next for Detective Thursday Next? Protecting the world’s greatest literature—not to mention keeping up with Miss Havisham—is tiring work for an expectant mother. And Thursday can definitely use a respite. But peace and quiet remain elusive for Thursday, who soon discovers that the Well itself is a veritable linguistic free-for-all, where grammasites run rampant, plot devices are hawked on the black market, and lousy books—like Caversham Heights—are scrapped for salvage. This book was released on with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by Advaita Ashrama, a publication house of Ramakrishna Math, Belur Math, this is Volume 9 of the nine volume series constituting 'The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda'. In these volumes we have not only a gospel to the world at large, but also, to its own children, the Charter of the Hindu faith. For the first time in history, Hinduism itself forms here the subject of generalization of a Hindu mind of the highest order. What Hinduism had needed was the organizing and consolidating of its own idea, a rock where she could lie at anchor, and an authoritative utterance in which she might recognise herself. What the world had needed was a faith that had no fear of truth. Both are found in the words and writings of Swami Vivekananda. It is the latest gospel of a modern Prophet of religion and spirituality to the mankind.

Download or read book Radio Empire written by Daniel Ryan Morse and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially created to counteract broadcasts from Nazi Germany, the BBC’s Eastern Service became a cauldron of global modernism and an unlikely nexus of artistic exchange. Directed at an educated Indian audience, its programming provided remarkable moments: Listeners in India heard James Joyce reading from Finnegans Wake on the eve of independence, as well as the literary criticism of E. M. Forster and the works of Indian writers living in London. In Radio Empire, Daniel Ryan Morse demonstrates the significance of the Eastern Service for global Anglophone literature and literary broadcasting. He traces how modernist writers used radio to experiment with form and introduce postcolonial literature to global audiences. While innovative authors consciously sought to incorporate radio’s formal features into the novel, literature also exerted a reciprocal and profound influence on twentieth-century broadcasting. Reading Joyce and Forster alongside Attia Hosain, Mulk Raj Anand, and Venu Chitale, Morse demonstrates how the need to appeal to listeners at the edges of the empire pushed the boundaries of literary work in London, inspired high-cultural broadcasting in England, and formed an invisible but influential global network. Adding a transnational perspective to scholarship on radio modernism, Radio Empire demonstrates how the history of broadcasting outside of Western Europe offers a new understanding of the relationship between colonial center and periphery.

Book Geological Hazards in the UK

Download or read book Geological Hazards in the UK written by D.P. Giles and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK is perhaps unique globally in that it presents the full spectrum of geological time, stratigraphy and associated lithologies within its boundaries. With this wide range of geological assemblages comes a wide range of geological hazards, whether they be geophysical (earthquakes, effects of volcanic eruptions, tsunami, landslides), geotechnical (collapsible, compressible, liquefiable, shearing, swelling and shrinking soils), geochemical (dissolution, radon and methane gas hazards) or georesource related (coal, chalk and other mineral extraction). An awareness of these hazards and the risks that they pose is a key requirement of the engineering geologist. The Geological Society considered that a Working Party Report would help to put the study and assessment of geohazards into the wider social context, helping the engineering geologist to better communicate the issues concerning geohazards in the UK to the client and the public. This volume sets out to define and explain these geohazards, to detail their detection, monitoring and management and to provide a basis for further research and understanding.
