Book Revised System of Cavalry Tactics

Download or read book Revised System of Cavalry Tactics written by Joseph Wheeler and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revised System of Cavalry Tactics: For the Use of the Cavalry and Mounted Infantry, C. S. A Much has been said regarding the relative advantage of single and double rank formation. We have seen that the depth of formation has been gradually decreasing during the last two thousand years from ten or even sixteen ranks to the present system. The most prefect system of formation is that which enables the commander to do the most service with a given number of men. We will suppose a Cavalry Brigade of four regiments to be drawn up to charge the enemy. With the single rank formation the Brigade will be formed in four lines and inflict upon the enemy four successive shocks, each of which would be nearly as severe as a charge in two ranks, and the number of shocks being double, the amount of execution would certainly be much greater. Another advantage in single ranks, is the grater facility with which troops can be handled and reformed, after the confusion of a charge, and what is of more importance, disorder or confusion are less liable to be incurred. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Fifth West Virginia Cavalry: Formerly the Second Virginia Infantry, and of Battery G, First West Va; Light Artillery It IS well to state, perhaps, that these pages are not intended as a history in full of any of the battles or campaigns mentioned, or of the armies that took part in them, but rather of the part our own regiment took in them. Other commands, no doubt, did as good service as our own, and they are not given the prominence they would have in a more general history, because this is intended solely as a regimental history. Book Cavalry in Modern War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cavalry in Modern War Classic Reprint written by F. Chenevix Trench and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cavalry in Modern War IT has been said that a great general, like a great poet, is born, not made; and if this be true at all in any peculiar sense, it is true of the cavalry general, who must be well endowed with the gifts of nature before he begins to develop them by study and practice. But there is another saying, quite as true as the first, that genius consists in a capacity for taking trouble. One might drive a coach and six through either of these sayings, but there is an element of truth in both of them. No short-sighted, slow-thinking, muddle-headed man can make a good officer of any kind, least of all a good cavalry officer. But it would be quite as great an error to expect great things from one whose mind never rises above field sports and athletics. As a matter of fact, the Frederics and N apoleons of history have been thorough students as well as practical soldiers, and an officer who does not read can never, in these days, hope to excel. Army The decisive power of cavalry lies in its mobility and its rifle. The main value of cavalry now, as in the past, lies in oppos ing Infantry. The term Mounted Infantry should be no longer one of reproach. On foot, the cavalry of today, man for man equal to infantry, can attack positions, with the same determination, the same resolution, as infantry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventy Problems: Infantry Tactics, Battalion, Brigade and Division These problems and papers are in the main those given to the classes at the Army School of the Line during the five years I was charged with the conduct of the Military Art Department. They were not written with any idea of publication nor do they form a connected series. Each was intended to inculcate some tactical lesson or lessons which the class at that time seemed to need. My friend and colleague at the Leavenworth Schools, Captain A. L. Conger, has asked permission to publish these problems in book form, believing that they will be of use to our officers who are studing tactics. I have agreed that he may do so provided he will do the work of preparing them for the printer and reading the proofs, tasks for which I could not now spare the time even had I the inclination. It needs to be recalled in reading the problems that they were written while the 1904 Infantry Drill Regulations were still in force and while the company, with a supposed war strength of 128 men, was divided into two platoons of two sections each. Thus the commands and forms of orders will sometimes be found not in accord with present regulations. However, clerical technique is after all a minor consideration and presents no difficulties. The main need of our officers is a knowledge of the fundamental principles of tactics and how to apply them. This knowledge is to be gained, not by studying rules, formulae or "normal" schemes, but by practice in solving problems. Such practice, combined with knowledge of human nature and common sense, is what makes the tactician. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minty and the Cavalry: A History of Cavalry Campaigns in the Western Armies To my comrades in arms, who may differ with me in the ac counts herein contained, I would call to mind the difficulty of getting any considerable number to agree upon all the circum stances Of even the most trivial incident in camp or field; and while I do not pretend to give all the notable or even important events which transpired in our field Of Operations, I do claim to have sought earnestly to state the exact facts in those noted. In treating of the independent regiments, or parts of regiments, I have, by extensive correspondence, extending over a number of years, arrived at the conclusions given, while in tracing the ope rations of the brigades and the divisions, I have carefully followed the official reports and official correspondence written at the time. In the accounts Of charges and battles, I have uniformly given credit to those leading the advance, without, in any wise, however, detracting from the important service rendered by those in rear or in reserve. Book Lectures on Cavalry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Cavalry Classic Reprint written by Paul Trapier Hayne and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Cavalry I Have two lectures and one conference in which to discuss the employment or use of cavalry. There is a good deal on this subject scattered through the F.S.R., and certain paragraphs of the C.D.R. have been assigned for conference. But what is given in both F.S.R., and C.D.R. is in general so condensed that it does not clear up the situation much unless one has a good mental picture of the situations the authors had in view. I shall try to go more into detail, so that the application of the principles given in the C.D.R. and the F.S.R. may be more clear. The whole matter of the employment of cavalry is so little a matter of rule that it may be said there are no rules for it. In regard to some questions there are various opinions, and the details of how cavalry was handled in war to accomplish certain results are hard to obtain. But there are a number of general principles as to which there is very little question, though the methods of applying these principles may vary. More new ideas on the subject of the employment of cavalry were brought out and put into practice in our Civil War than in any war since, and, up to the present time, there is no better source of information as to how cavalry should be handled - also, from this same war numerous examples of how cavalry should never be used.
