Book Cavalry Reconnaissance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cavalry Reconnaissance Classic Reprint written by W. W. Norman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cavalry Reconnaissance This work has been written with a view to assisting young cavalry officers to study the art of reconnaissance, and to instruct their men. A number of historical examples have been given in the introduction with the double object of bringing out the importance of information in war, and of providing a series of incidents from actual war which may be of use to make troop and squadron lectures more interesting. For the rest it has been sought to illustrate and amplify those excellent principles laid down in our regulations, and to bring forward certain details on which they are, for want of space, silent, and on which there are no guides for the young officer. In Chapter III, exception has been taken to instruction in road reports, the collection of statistics in regard to supplies, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Scout, Spy and Soldier of Forrest's Cavalry Of that charge, of course, neither knew. But one was terribly uneasy in regard to himself and so was the other feeling bad for his friend's situation. It was this, one had been wounded, shot in the face, was discharged from the army. At that time, 1861, a discharge was easy. The Confederate authorities were not particular in having dis figured, maimed or any kind of cripples on the fighting line. Book Studies in Applied Tactics

Download or read book Studies in Applied Tactics written by Georg Von Alten and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Applied Tactics: Part I. Reconnaissance; Part II. Cavalry Outposts; March and Combined Outpost Since the applicatory system of instruction in the art of war has come into such favor, and justly so, a great many books have appeared based on this system. All those producing these books are disciples of General von Verdy, and have imitated him more or less successfully. The more nearly they have succeeded, the better their results have been. It is believed that the following pages devoted to research in this field will be found both valuable and interesting. The first part will appeal particularly to cavalry officers, as it deals with cavalry reconnaissance, especially that of smaller bodies. The second part will appeal to all officers studying troop-leading of the division and array corps. The author kindly consented to his work being translated and changed in so far as found desirable in adapting it to our own Army organization. Therefore it must be remembered, for example, that a troop of cavalry is assumed to contain 100 men, divided into 4 platoons. These changes were made to facilitate a study of the problems. Whenever practicable, our own Field Service Regulations are quoted and referred to by foot-note. This happens quite frequently, the similarity between the German and our own doubtless being due to the former having been freely consulted in formulating the latter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cavalry Life in Tent and Field I take pleasure in directing attention to the kind and affectionate tribute paid my husband, Captain Orsemus Bronson Boyd, and contained in the Appendix of this volume. It is from the pen of a former classmate, the gifted writer, Colonel Richard Henry Savage. I trust my readers will not think this introduction too lengthy. The perusal of it seems necessary to a proper understanding of my reasons for describing, in the following pages, the pains, perils, and pleasures experienced by land and sea in the various peregrinations of a cavalry officers wife. With Colonel Savages testimonial it furnishes a completeness to the narrative that would otherwise be lacking. Book Lectures on Cavalry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Cavalry Classic Reprint written by Paul Trapier Hayne and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Cavalry I Have two lectures and one conference in which to discuss the employment or use of cavalry. There is a good deal on this subject scattered through the F.S.R., and certain paragraphs of the C.D.R. have been assigned for conference. But what is given in both F.S.R., and C.D.R. is in general so condensed that it does not clear up the situation much unless one has a good mental picture of the situations the authors had in view. I shall try to go more into detail, so that the application of the principles given in the C.D.R. and the F.S.R. may be more clear. The whole matter of the employment of cavalry is so little a matter of rule that it may be said there are no rules for it. In regard to some questions there are various opinions, and the details of how cavalry was handled in war to accomplish certain results are hard to obtain. But there are a number of general principles as to which there is very little question, though the methods of applying these principles may vary. More new ideas on the subject of the employment of cavalry were brought out and put into practice in our Civil War than in any war since, and, up to the present time, there is no better source of information as to how cavalry should be handled - also, from this same war numerous examples of how cavalry should never be used.
