Book APM Archeologia Postmedievale 18 2014 Archeologia dei relitti postmedievali Archaeology of Post Medieval Shipwrecks

Download or read book APM Archeologia Postmedievale 18 2014 Archeologia dei relitti postmedievali Archaeology of Post Medieval Shipwrecks written by Carlo Beltrame and published by All’Insegna del Giglio. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Archaeology and Architecture of the Military Orders

Download or read book Archaeology and Architecture of the Military Orders written by Mathias Piana and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As elite communities in medieval societies the Military Orders were driven by the ambition to develop built environments that fulfilled monastic needs as well as military requirements and, in addition, residential and representational purposes. Growing affluence and an international orientation provided a wide range of development potential. That this potential was in fact exploited may be exemplified by the advanced fortifications erected by Templars and Hospitallers in the Levant. Although the history of the Military Orders has been the subject of research for a long time, their material legacy has attracted less attention. In recent years, however, a vast range of topics concerning the Orders’ building activities has become the object of investigation, primarily with the help of archaeology. They comprise the choice of sites and building materials, provision and storage of food and water, aspects of the daily life, the design and layout of commanderies, churches and fortifications, their spatial arrangement, and the role these buildings played in their environmental context. This volume contains ten articles discussing the archaeology and architecture of buildings erected by the three major Military Orders in different geographical regions. They cover most countries of Western Europe and include a number of important fortifications in the Levant. These studies break new ground in the investigation of the built fabric of the Military Orders. Written by noted international scholars this publication is an important contribution to modern research on these institutions, which, in their association of monasticism and knighthood, were so typical for the Middle Ages.

Book The Countryside Of Hospitaller Rhodes 1306 1423

Download or read book The Countryside Of Hospitaller Rhodes 1306 1423 written by Anthony Luttrell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Countryside of Hospitaller Rhodes 1306–1423 explores the main themes of settlement, population and defence of the countryside of Rhodes from 1306 to 1423, approximately halfway through the period of Hospitaller rule. Based largely on the Hospital’s Rhodian archive, this book is the scientific presentation of 208 documents brought together with detailed English summaries to help readers understand the documents and their technical features. While the majority of research into this subject has previously been focused on the town of Rhodes, this book concentrates instead on the late-medieval countryside, providing a new angle from which to view this complex period. Through a corpus of Hospitaller texts, it presents many aspects of the Hospitaller Order’s history as well as exploring other crucial developments in the period, including both a discussion of Cristoforo Buondelmonti’s description of Rhodes, and a section dedicated to the sources used within this work. The Countryside of Hospitaller Rhodes provides an ideal for academics and postgraduates of the crusades.

Book International Mobility in the Military Orders twelfth to Fifteenth Centuries

Download or read book International Mobility in the Military Orders twelfth to Fifteenth Centuries written by Helen J. Nicholson and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Mobility is an anthology of essays by an international team of experts on the travels of the brothers of the international military religious orders: the Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonic Knights and others, during the Middle Ages. The military orders, particularly the Templars and Hospitallers, depended on intense West-East contacts and networks of extensive geographical proportions (from Spain to the Middle East, from Scotland to Northern Africa) for the exchange of personnel, resources, and monies. To date there has been no comprehensive study of the international contacts, networks and mobility of these orders. The essays collected here consider these questions from a variety of perspectives: general aspects and individual cases; the mobilization of resources for the East; regional studies - mobility and the military orders in the West; and national considerations in the international arena.
