Book The Causes and Cures of Criminality

Download or read book The Causes and Cures of Criminality written by Hans J. Eysenck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title that the authors have chosen for this book, The Causes and Cures of Criminality, suggests that it may be just another book specu lating on the sociological evils that need to be put right for "everything in the garden to be lovely." If this is the expectation, the reader could not be more mistaken. The recurrent theme, in fact, is a strong accent on psychological experiments. Both authors have tackled the theoretical and practical side of crime through an exhaustive literature review of past experi mental work. Hans J. Eysenck has concentrated on the constitutional and biological theory of criminality, whereas Gisli Gudjonsson has con cerned himself more with a review of ongoing research into therapy and possible prevention of antisocial behavior. Part I goes into considerable detail on the causes of criminality, stressing much of the strangely neglected area of individual differences in personality. Research studies point to a very heavy involvement of heredity in the causation of criminality, but the authors are careful to acknowledge that much can be done environmentally to discourage a life of crime once those persons who are at risk have been identified.

Book Crime Its Causes and Remedies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Crime Its Causes and Remedies Classic Reprint written by Cesare Lombroso and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime, Its Causes and Remedies is a work of criminology by author and Professor of Criminal Anthropology, Cesare Lombroso. Lombroso was a professor at the Italian University of Turin, and thus all of his works were written in Italian. This book, translated by Henry P. Horton, was not released in English until after Lombroso's death. It was selected by the American Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology for translation and deemed vitally important in the understanding of crime and criminals. Part one examines the factors that contribute to crime, paying more attention to the individual than to environmental factors. Part two looks at ways in which crime can be reduced and avoided, highlighting both effective and ineffective measures that have been used. Part three applies the lessons of the first two parts to propose a detailed system for dealing with crime and criminals, from the penalties that criminals should face to the appropriate institutions they should be held in. If nothing else, Crime, Its Causes and Remedies is a case study on how far a field of science can progress in 100 years. Much of the content of this book is hopelessly out of date and many of the theories forwarded in this book would be highly controversial if presented today, including equating epileptics and criminals, and the heavy reliance on racial profiling. This book is valuable mostly for the historical insights it provides into criminology and moral attitudes rather than as a source of textbook knowledge about the subject. Book The Cause and Cure of Crime

Download or read book The Cause and Cure of Crime written by Charles Richmond Henderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cause and Cure of Crime The emphasis of Professor Henderson upon the fact that crime is not a disease is refreshing in view of many recent utterances, and indicates the sane view of the author upon the cause and cure of crime. This little book is offered in the expectation that it may present an outline of the problems and at the same time offer some suggestions to police officers, students, and members of courts on the matter of jails, influences of surroundings, and lack of education and right home conditions upon the creation of criminals. The well-known work of the author, Prison Reform and Criminal Law, should make this book equally welcome.
