Book Biodiversity Monitoring in Australia

Download or read book Biodiversity Monitoring in Australia written by David Lindenmayer and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological and biodiversity-based monitoring has been marked by an appalling lack of effectiveness and lack of success in Australia for more than 40 years, despite the billions of dollars that are invested in biodiversity conservation annually. What can be done to rectify this situation? This book tackles many aspects of the problem of biodiversity monitoring. It arose from a major workshop held at The Australian National University in February 2011, attended by leaders in the science, policy-making and management arenas of biodiversity conservation. Chapter contributors examine what has led to successful monitoring, the key problems with biodiversity monitoring and practical solutions to those problems. By capturing critical insights into successes, failures and solutions, the authors provide high-level guidance for important initiatives such as the National Biodiversity Strategy. Ultimately, the authors hope to considerably improve the quality and effectiveness of biodiversity monitoring in Australia, and to arrest the decline of biodiversity. KEY FEATURES * Engaging style * Practical information that is based on very high quality scientific information

Book Report of the Scientific Advisory Panel on Fire affected Grazing

Download or read book Report of the Scientific Advisory Panel on Fire affected Grazing written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is the report of the Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) convened by Parks Victoria to advise on the information necessary to develop a sound, scientifically-based decision making process to determine when and where cattle grazing should return to the Alpine National Park following the 2003 fires. The Report discusses the impacts of these fires on the natural, or conservation, values of the Alpine National Park, and assesses the risks to these values within the park, and the change in risk over time, in relation to a return of grazing to licenced areas. It considers these issues in terms of the catchments and aquatic ecosystems, the montane and low country terrestrial ecosystems, the high country (alpine and subalpine) terrestrial ecosystems, and the grazing resource. The Report also considers the issue of monitoring, and a decision framework based on the development of environmental benchmarks that could be used in the management of a return of grazing in the Alpine National Park, and associated costs.

Book Biodiversity and Environmental Change

Download or read book Biodiversity and Environmental Change written by Emma Burns and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Long-term ecological data are critical for informing long-term trends in biodiversity and trends in environmental change. The Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) is a major initiative of the Australian Government and one of its key areas of investment is to provide funding for a network of long-term ecological research plots around Australia (LTERN). This book highlights some of the temporal changes in the environment and/or in biodiversity that have occurred in different ecosystems, ranging from tropical rainforests, wet eucalypt forests and alpine regions through to rangelands and deserts. Many important trends and changes are documented and they often provide new insights that were previously poorly understood or unknown. These data are precisely the kinds of data so desperately needed to better quantify the temporal trajectories in the environment and biodiversity in Australia.

Book Fire Ecology and Management of the Major Ecosystems of Southern Utah

Download or read book Fire Ecology and Management of the Major Ecosystems of Southern Utah written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides managers with a literature synthesis of the historical conditions, current conditions, fire regime condition classes (FRCC), and recommended treatments for the major ecosystems in southern Utah. Sections are by ecosystems and include: 1) coniferous forests (ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, and Engelmann spruce-subalpine fir), 2) aspen, 3) pinyon-juniper, 4) big and black sagebrush, and 5) desert shrubs (creosotebush, blackbrush, and interior chaparral). Southern Utah is at the ecological crossroads for much of the western United States. It contains steep environmental gradients and a broad range of fuels and fire regimes associated with vegetation types representative of the Rocky Mountains, the Great Basin, Northern Arizona and New Mexico, and the Mohave Desert. The Southern Utah Demonstration Area consists of contiguous state and federal lands within the administrative boundaries of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Fishlake and Dixie National Forests, National Park Sevice, and State of Utah, roughly encompassing the southern 15 percent of Utah (3.24 million ha). The vegetation types described are similar in species composition, stand structure, and ecologic function, including fire regime to vegetation types found on hundreds of millions of hectares in the 11 western states.

Book Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories

Download or read book Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories written by Nigel Dudley and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2008 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IUCN's Protected Areas Management Categories, which classify protected areas according to their management objectives, are today accepted as the benchmark for defining, recording, and classifying protected areas. They are recognized by international bodies such as the United Nations as well as many national governments. As a result, they are increasingly being incorporated into government legislation. These guidelines provide as much clarity as possible regarding the meaning and application of the Categories. They describe the definition of the Categories and discuss application in particular biomes and management approaches.
