One boy answered, "I can speak a little Norwegian and a little German, and I understand horses and cows." That is the very object in writing this book. We want to make the language of cows a little better understood by the dairymen of this country. To know about cows, the farms and the best farm practices in different parts of our great country will make a man a better farmer on his own farm. With the reading of this book we hope that farmers may have their vision broadened and perhaps a suggestion will be found that will change a practice so that a little more money may be made and saved. At the time of writing this preface farming is said to be in a bad way. The lawmakers and the others are all busy trying to help the farmer. Some good will come of their efforts. We think, however, that the most good will come through the efforts of the farmer himself. He will build for himself on his own farm and will build for himself and for his neighbors when he joins with them in the community and state enterprises which he will help to build, at the foundation first, in his own community. Co-operative effort will make for "better farming, better business and better living." The dairy farmer is the best off of all. Conditions in Wisconsin and New York and the other dairy states show that. This is no time for anything but optimism because the demand for milk and dairy products is growing and the market for these is the foundation of the business. With the market for milk and dairy products becoming increasingly good the market for surplus dairy cattle will become better. The object in writing this book is to help some with all this. Breeders and dairymen appreciated that nothing of this sort had ever before been prepared for their benefit - a series of practical articles giving explicit directions on the important question of how to feed their dairy cows most efficiently and most economically. In addition, it was written not only from the standpoint of the ordinary dairyman, but from the point of view of the Holstein breeder as well - the breeder who is anxious to make the most of his opportunities. In short, the book of Savage articles comprised the most complete, understandable and up-to-the-minute text-book of Holstein feeding information ever put together. The first edition was quickly snapped up by the breeders, and likewise by agricultural colleges and schools, who bought these books in quantity for text-book use. In view of this enthusiastic reception, backing up our judgment in the matter, we are issuing a third edition, revised and brought down to date. The entire subject of feeding dairy cattle, as handled by Professor Savage, is based upon actual methods in use by successful dairymen. This book differs from the ordinary text-book in the important respect that every theory is made to deliver the goods in actual practice before it is accepted. Professor Savage is recognized as an authority on feeding matters. His ideas have proven successful not only in his own experience, but in the hands of dairymen and breeders who have put them into practice. He is in charge of the foundation courses in Feeds and Feeding at Cornell University, and has done considerable experimental and research work in feeding in that institution. Several cows with records of 30 to 35 pounds have been bred and developed in the university herd, and one of these cows, Glista Ernestine, has made seven different 30-pound records. The handling of these cows forms the basis of an interesting chapter in this book. The details of the care and feed of a number of the leading producers, in both short and longtime tests, as given by the men in actual charge, form the basis of other chapters, invaluable to the man who is interested in getting the greatest possible returns from his test work. Altogether we can commend this book to our Holstein friends in full confidence that its careful study will result in added knowledge of the subject of feeding that will be of practical service to them in their business as Holstein breeders and dairymen. Dadd, Professor of Anatomy and Physiology, both of the Boston Veterinary Institute. If this chapter contributes anything to promote a more humane and judicious treatment of cattle when suffering from dis ease, I shall feel amply repaid for the labor bestowed upon the whole work. For the latter class of young men, tuition in farmin and information from books, are as re uisite as for the former. Those w 0 have constantly seen farming from in ancy can never be said to have been young farmers for, by the time they are fit to act for themselves, they are proficients in farm ing. Having myself, for a time, been placed precisely in the position of the first descri tion of oung men, I can bear sincere testimony to the truth of the di cultice have described as having to be encountered in the first year of apprenticeship. I felt that a ghide-book would have been an invaluable monitor tome, but none such existed at the time. N o doubt it is quite reasonable to expect of the farmer ability to instruct the pupils committed to his charge in a. Competent manner. This is certainly his duty; which, if rightly performed, no guide-book would be required by pu ils; but very few farmers who receive pupils undertake the onerous task of instruction. Practical farming they leave the pupils to acquire for themselves in the fields, by imperfect observation and slow experience, as they themselves had previously done theoretical knowledge, ver few, if any, are competent to impart. The pupils, being thus very muc left to their own application, can scarcely avoi being beset with difficulties, and losing much time. At the same time it must be acknowledged that the practice gained by slow experience is, in the end the most valuable and enduring. Still, a book on farming, expressly written to suit his circum stances, might be a valuable instructor to the young farmer; it might guard him against the difficulties which learners are apt to encounter; and it would recompense him for loss of time, by imparting sound professional information.
