The TRP Chapbook Series ... from “Each Day a New Round of Sadness” Islands of the Hawaiian archipelago are connected to each other under the surface of the sea. Under the surface of the sea something roils like a volcano preparing to explode. To explode sometimes suggests a solution to the situation of constraint, ubiquitous as fear these days, when stasis is a prize. A prize, that is, compared to illness. Can’t wellness sink its teeth deep into me to feel acutely as a wound? A wound is what the dream delivers with an image of my mother wreathed in Hawaiian flowers— tuberose releasing its cloying daylong ennui.

Book excerpt: More than sixty percent of emerging infectious diseases that affect humans are caused by zoonotic pathogens. Over the last two centuries, there have been many examples of zoonotic microorganisms that have caused important epidemics or pandemics around the world. However, currently, zoonotic emerging infectious diseases are still or are even a higher threat for global health, including animal, public and environmental health, probably due to factors such as globalization, the increasing temperature of global health, intensive agriculture or industrialization have favored the emergence or re-emerging of these diseases, among many others. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking collection that explores human–animal relations and deaths with depth and hope When Animals Die is an innovative collection of essays that delves into the intricate and uneasy dynamics between humans and other-than-human animals, particularly concerning animal deaths, which are predominantly caused by humans. This groundbreaking book brings together prominent scholars from various disciplines to address the challenging field of animal death studies, incorporating perspectives from social sciences, humanities, biological sciences, and perspectives from beyond academia. The collection explores profound questions about the experience of animal death for both animals and humans. It examines how humans rationalize animal deaths and utilize deceased animals, and sheds light on the interconnectedness of animal death with issues like race, colonialism, gender, capitalism, and other systems of inequality that humans have established and perpetuated. By confronting these pertinent issues, When Animals Die seeks to deepen our awareness of the relationship between animal death and humanity’s involvement in it. While grappling with the reality of humans’ impact on the earth, the collection offers hope for an alternative future that does not entail the mutual destruction of human and other-than-human animals.

Book Shakespeare on the Ecological Surface

Download or read book Shakespeare on the Ecological Surface written by Liz Oakley-Brown and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-01-31 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare on the Ecological Surface uses the concept of the ‘surface’ to examine the relationship between contemporary performance and ecocriticism. Each section looks, in turn, at the 'surfaces' of slick, smoke, sky, steam, soil, slime, snail, silk, skin and stage to build connections between ecocriticism, activism, critical theory, Shakespeare and performance. While the word ‘surface’ was never used in Shakespeare’s works, Liz Oakley-Brown shows how thinking about Shakespearean surfaces helps readers explore the politics of Elizabethan and Jacobean culture. She also draws surprising parallels with our current political and ecological concerns. The book explores how Shakespeare uses ecological surfaces to help understand other types of surfaces in his plays and poems: characters’ public-facing selves; contact zones between characters and the natural world; surfaces upon which words are written; and physical surfaces upon which plays are staged. This book will be an illuminating read for anyone studying Shakespeare, early modern culture, ecocriticism, performance and activism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research shows that a highly stressed brain does not absorb or remember information, causing learning to essentially shut down. Today’s students are more stressed and anxious than ever, and classrooms have become tense places. Educators require knowledge and skills to facilitate and teach students stress-management techniques and find creative ways to embed them in the classroom culture and daily routines. Calming Student Stress is a synthesis of empirical-based mind-body practices that have been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, help students remain centered and focused, and connect with the learning and each other. Various methods, techniques, and strategies that draw from mindfulness, yoga, tai chi, breathwork, and visualization are clearly defined, situated within current research, and geared towards both elementary and secondary students. Suggestions on how to introduce mind-body practices to students, as well as administrators and parents, are also provided within this helpful guide.
