Book excerpt: Micaceous vermiculite was found to be ubiquitous in soils, sediments, and aerosol mineral dusts and to adsorb fission product ions, particularly 137Cs and 9°Sr/sup 2 +/. Crystallographic wedge zones (imaged by ultramicrotomy and electron microscopy) in micaceous vermiculite effected tight fixation of Cs+. Lowering of mica layer charge occurred in local areas, electronoscopically imaged by use of blister-swelling cations. Nuclear fission particle tracks of U enhanced translayer diffusion of elements, measured mica layer charge and age. Iron-aluminum hydrous oxide coatings adsorbed divalent cations of the alkaline earth, transition, and heavy metal elements from trace concentrations in the presence of 1 M NaNO3. Global deposition of dust by rainfall accounted for the wide distribution of Cs-fixing micaceous vermiculite in soils. Origin of the dust was traced through a method developed for isolation of fine quartz silt (1 to 10 .mu.m diameter). Mass spectrometry of its 18O/16O isotopic ratios showed distinctly higher (delta18O = 17 to 22%0) and lower (delta18O = 9 to 15%0) ranges in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, respectively. This difference was traced to the relative proportions of quartz from low-temperature authigenic (chert) vs igneous-metamorphic origin in the respective latitudes, hinging on trans-equatorial continental drift.

Book excerpt: Determination of layer charge of micas by 235U fission particle tracks (thermal neutron activated) was completed by a development of a unique method of UO/sup 2 +/ saturation at pH 2.4 and removal of excess salts physically. The U content and age-dating of soil micas was also accomplished by fission particle counting. Thermodynamic metastability of micaceous vermiculite in soils with reversible mica-vermiculite reactions were found to result in extremely tenacious natural fixation of Cs in soil fine fractions and weathering rock, a model for 137Cs+ retention. Visual models for Cs+ fixation were obtained as structural layer images of micaceous vermiculite wedges in clays, including kaolinites. Diverse divalent cations were found to adsorb specifically (i.e., in lM NaNO3) on hydrous oxides of Fe and Al, materials common in soils and capable of ''holding up'' 9°Sr/sup 2 +/, 45Ca/sup 2 +/, and other fission products from free movement in groundwaters. Aerosol size quartz (1 to 10 .mu.m), from dusts containing Cs+ fixing micaceous vermiculites, was characterized by oxygen isotopic ratio analysis and the ratios found useful in tracing dust provenance. Quartz of chert origin was revealed electron microscopically as clusters of fine subhedral crystals. Of the 20 elements measured in Cretaceous shales La, Sm, Ba, and Hf showed trends in concentration from igneous shore line to central basin, correlative with change in oxygen isotopic ratio.

Book excerpt: The problem of hydrolysis of UO2/sup 2 +/ during the determination of surface charge of micas was eliminated by the washing with 0.01M UO2(NO3)2 of pH 2.4 and then blotting off the liquid. The replica method of determining the 235U fission tracks induced by thermal neutrons was developed to give a constant HF etching time to make the tracks visible. The replica method was also applied to the determination of the U concentration in micas and their age-dating. Diverse divalent cations in trace concentrations were found to adsorb specifically (i.e., in 1M NaNO3) on hydrous oxides of Fe and Al. The results with 9°Sr/sup 2 +/ and 45Ca/sup 2 +/ were published; those with Cd, Zn, and other transition and heavy metals were submitted for publication. Insight into fixation of cations such as 137-Cs was provided by determination of the kinetics of the mica-vermiculite reaction in relation to partial pressure of CO2, and by high resolution electron microscopy, revealing images of interlayer wedge configurations. Aerosol size quartz had less variable oxygen isotopic ratios in eolian than fluvial systems; also, its trace element concentrations as well as isotopic ratios were useful in assigning provenance. Quartz of chert origin was revealed electron microscopically as clusters of subhedral crystals.
