Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Includes pictures. *Includes a bibliography and footnotes. "Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire." - St. Catherine of Siena A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' Catholic Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of the Church's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. As one of the two patron saints of Italy and one of six patron saints of Europe, it's immediately apparent that Catherine of Siena was one of Catholicism's most important figures, and possibly its most influential woman. Famous today for adhering to the tenets of the Dominican order and living a material-free life, Catherine worked in her day to help reunite the Catholic Church after a schism had brought some of the base of power to Avignon, France. At the same time, she also sought to bring together the disparate Italian states that were constantly at war with each other. However, Catherine's life after death has also been incredibly influential. Revived by the Risorgimento, repurposed into an instrument of Catholic nationalism by 19th century scholars, and eventually embraced by fascism as a symbol of Italian virtues and the embodiment of the idea of Romanita, Catherine of Siena's reputation is both blurred and strikingly sharp, depending on the function she is given by those who remember her. Recognized by the Catholic Church as a saint in 1461, as well as a Doctor of the Church and one of the patron saints of Italy in 1970, Catherine of Siena's life and actions have stimulated the imagination and piety of many since the early 15th century. More than 500 years after her death, her legacy was seized and even untowardly exploited during the early 20th century, leading to a pronounced tendency of scholarly demystification that attempted to strip her of credibility as part of the general process of the deconstruction of fascist symbols and emblems. Scholars trying to distance themselves from their past have questioned even the basic tenets of her hagiography and have attempted to turn her into a second hand figure in Italian history, isolating her from the historical and cultural context from which she stemmed. On the other hand, Catholic believers who relied on her intercession and regarded her as a model of conduct have emphasized her qualities and have sometimes attempted to make the staples of hagiographic writing more palatable to the modern reader. Catherine's extreme ascetic practices, her considerable involvement in the political turmoil of 14th century Italy, and her extensive epistolary exchanges are only a few reasons why she is a compelling figure, and one in need of objective analysis. Catherine's life and legacy are crucial toward understanding female religiosity, mysticism and asceticism during the medieval period. At the same time, the historical sources regarding most medieval individuals can be sketchy, so the sources on her life must be closely analyzed, including her letters and the main hagiographic writings of Raymond of Capua and Tomaso Caffarini, two of her confessors. Although the historical biographies of saints cannot be completely recovered "as they truly happened" there is still great value in studying such narratives, regardless of the reader's confessional orientation. Catholic Legends: The Life and Legacy of St. Catherine of Siena details the remarkable life of one of the Catholic Church's most famous saints, while also covering the controversies over her legacy. Along with pictures and a bibliography, you will learn about St. Catherine of Siena like you never have before, in no time at all.

Download or read book The Road to Siena written by Edmund Gardner and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catherine of Siena’s influence was felt throughout the kingdoms of Europe. She enjoyed the confidence of popes, royalty, and most of all, the common people of Italy. A complicated woman, she was able to speak bluntly to a queen: “Instead of a woman, you have become the servant and slave of nothingness, making yourself the subject of lies and of the demon who is their father”; and also encourage the wife of a simple tailor: “Clothe yourself in the royal virtues.” Her story is told in this landmark biography, first published a century ago and praised by Evelyn Underhill as the best modern biography of a saint ever written. Long out of print, this new edition has been slightly abridged and generously supplemented with the reflections of other biographers, historians, and artists—who shed fresh light on what we know about an amazing woman. “The Road to Siena is a fairly brief-but-concentrated book illustrating a rather brief-but-concentrated life. Our instincts to distrust Catherine’s visions as delusions and her hearty exhortations as mania are natural, but repeatedly Gardner manages to put them down in turn, and all of our modern understanding must be humbled a bit when we read that the invisible stigmata Catherine claimed in her life became manifest and quite visible upon her death, even if her mystical wedding ring did not. Taken together, the book brings the reader into close contact with Catherine’s flame; one feels the heat that singed the consciences of popes and monarchs alike.” —Elizabeth Scalia, Benedictine Oblate, author of the award-winning Strange Gods: Unmasking the Idols in Everyday Life, and Word on Fire Editor-at-Large

Book Saint Catherine of Siena and Her Times

Download or read book Saint Catherine of Siena and Her Times written by Margaret Roberts and published by Sophia Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long time ago in a land not so far away, an imperial Pope repeatedly battled rebel forces. Those wars killed thousands, split Christendom, and spawned anti-Popes who joined the rebel alliance, brazenly challenging the authority of God’s Vicar on earth. Into this corrupt, brutal, turbulent world was born Catherine, the daughter of a modest Siennese cloth dyer. Now famed as the great St Catherine of Siena who changed the course of the Church and of European history, this child was early noted for her simple goodness, her great intelligence, and her remarkable courage – even in the face of the dangers and atrocities that characterized those dark times. St. Catherine of Siena and Her Times tells the moving tale of Catherine, whose call to live a cloistered life of prayer and penance was trumped not only by the social needs of her day (poverty, plague) but by the explicit orders of the Pope, who, hearing of her remarkable powers of reconciliation of enemies, called her out of obscurity to mediate between the warring parties, sometimes even at the risk to her life. Never partisan, Catherine used her access to the Pope to nag – that’s not too strong a word – the Pope to expunge from the Church the vices and luxuries that in those days had corrupted it at all levels. Too, she demanded that he return from the security of exile in France to his proper place in Rome, where the blood of martyrs had consecrated the soil. From letters Catherine sent to popes and politicians, cardinals and kings, as well as from the written accounts of many friends of Catherine, author Margaret Roberts has crafted the moving tale of this holy 14th century woman who rivaled in stature and influence the storied prophets of the Old Testament – and whose life serves as a noble example for Christians in our own turbulent times. In these fascinating pages, you’ll encounter Catherine, The modest young girl torn from her beloved cloistered life, and forced to sustain her life of continual prayer in the courts of dangerous kings and murderous queens, whose fearsome will she was required by the pope to challengeThe passionate, plain-spoken saint who, while sternly rebuking the high and the mighty, remained gravely conscious of her own failings and the need for love to triumph over allThe brave soul who repulsed with quiet words the bloodthirsty mob that rushed in to kill herThe simple Christian, who was repeatedly interrogated by experts, who hoped to convict her of heresy and burn her at the stakeThe woman whose faith remained steady in a world – and a Church – shaken and rocked by corruption, scandal, apostasy, and bloodshed. For Christians, our times are rough, and are likely to get rougher as aggressive secularism comes to dominate ever more aspects of our society. Rather than letting discouragement overtake you or confusion about how to act amidst conflicting demands in ugly times, turn for inspiration to this moving biography of St. Catherine of Siena, one of the greatest political figures of the 14th century and one of the greatest saints of all times.

Book Setting the World on Fire

Download or read book Setting the World on Fire written by Shelley Emling and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of only two patron saints of Italy, the other being St. Francis of Assisi, St. Catherine was ahead of her time. As a political powerhouse in late 14th century Europe, a time of war, social unrest and one of the worst natural disasters of all time--the plague, she worked for peace between Christians while campaigning for a holy crusade against Muslims. She was illiterate but grew into a great writer by dictating to assistants. She was frail and punished herself mercilessly, often starving herself, while offering moral guidance and inspiration to kings, queens and popes. It's easy to see why feminists through the years have sought to claim the patronage of St. Catherine. From her refusal to marry to her assertion that her physical appearance was of no importance, the famous Saint is ripe for modern interpretation. She was a peacemaker during Siena's revolution of 1368, sometimes addressing thousands of people in squares and streets; she convinced Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy to Rome at a time when the Catholic Church was unraveling. How did this girl, the second-youngest of 25 children of a middle-class dyer, grow to become one of the most beloved spiritual figures of all time, a theological giant to rank alongside the likes of Thomas Aquinas? In Setting the World on Fire, Emling gives an intimate portrayal of this fascinating and revolutionary woman.

Download or read book Lay Siege to Heaven written by Louis De Wohl and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-11-29 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing his popular series of novels about saints of the Church, de Wohl devotes his considerable talents to an interpretation of one of the most unusual women of all time, Saint Catherine of Siena. The daughter of a prosperous dyer in fourteenth-century Siena, Catherine never forgot the mystical experience of her extreme youth; at that time she devoted herself to Christ. It was, however, a shock to her family when, refusing marriage, she insisted on giving her life totally to God. Her career was extraordinary. In that confused and dangerous era of history, the Pope was living at Avignon: Catherine persuaded him to return to Rome. The City-States of Italy were at war with each other: Catherine subdued them. There was pestilence: Catherine served and saved. She performed miracles, she received the stigmata, she drew about her a crowd of devoted men and women. A saint who would not let the Lord God alone, she really did lay siege to heaven-and changed the face of her world. This novel, which is also a vivid biography, brings Catherine of Siena to life in a remarkable way. She lives on every page.

Book Saint Catherine of Siena

Download or read book Saint Catherine of Siena written by Mary Fabyan Windeatt and published by TAN Books. This book was released on 1993-04 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Oh, but I must hurry!" thought young Catherine very early one morning as she picked up a loaf of bread and a jug of water from the kitchen. "No one must suspect anything:" Catherine had made up her mind to run away. She wanted to become a hermit in a cave so she could pray and think about God all day long. Catherine slipped out the door and into the court-yard, then out into the cobbled street, then out beyond the city gates. Farther and farther she walked. Several hours went by. The countryside was growing wilder and stranger. "I am miles and miles away from home now;' said Catherine to herself. Suddenly, there it was! A beautiful cave! It looked like the perfect place. Catherine was overjoyed. But was Catherine really old enough to be a hermit? And wouldn't her father come looking for her to take her home? Most of all, was it really God's will for her to be a hermit? This book gives the answers. It also tells how Catherine cut off her hair, how she cared for the rude old woman, how she saved her dear father from Purgatory, and how she advised the Holy Father himself. All in all, this is the wonderful story of how little Catherine became one of the very greatest saints in the Catholic Church.

  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book Catherine of Siena written by Thomas McDermott and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Catherine of Siena was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1970, relatively little attention has been given to her mystical thought, particularly in the English-speaking world. The Dialogue, the famous compendium of her mature thought, is difficult to understand owing to its interruptions, repetitions, overlapping arguments, imagery and undefined terms. Thomas McDermott breaks new ground in his systematic presentation of Catherine¿s teachings. Drawing on the Dialogue and also on Catherine¿s 381 letters and prayers, he explains clearly her principal teachings in relation to spiritual development, and identifies Catherine¿s possible sources as well as her areas of originality. By examining Catherine¿s life and mystical experiences, McDermott shows how she herself grew spiritually and how her growth corresponds to her later teaching on the ¿three stairs¿ on the ¿bridge of Christ crucified.¿ Finally, the author puts forward what he regards as the fundamental message of Catherine¿s life and teaching. Students of mysticism and spirituality will find this book a trustworthy guide through the incredibly rich mysticism of one of the 14th century¿s most amazing women.

This book was released on 2016-12-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) is widely considered one of the greatest saints of all time. She is best known for her mystical "Dialogue" with God the Father, for which she was declared a Doctor of the Church, but her letters are also unmatched in their spiritual power and profundity. Many people do not know that St Catherine was also a stigmatist, bearing the wounds and suffering the passion of Christ for the salvation of souls. She prayed to God to make the wounds invisible so as not to draw attention to herself. Only her confessor, Blessed Raymond of Capua, knew of her sharing in the sufferings of Our Lord until the day the saint died, when the wounds became visible for all to see. This edition of The Letters of St. Catherine, originally published in 1905 (but now in more modern English in this newly revised and edited version), includes an Introduction on the Life and Times of the Saint, a description of Saint Catherine as Seen in her Letters, the Chief Events in the Life of Saint Catherine, and a Brief Outline of Contemporary Public Events.

Book Dialogue of St Catherine of Siena

Download or read book Dialogue of St Catherine of Siena written by St Catherine of Siena and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena contains four of the 14th-century saint's most famous works. During periods of ecstasy, she dictated these often subtle and always insightful essays to her followers, speaking directly to other devout Christians, addressing their spiritual concerns and pitfalls with a loving, though strict compassion. Believers and students of religion will find this book, as eloquent as it is inspiring, accessible and thought-provoking. Italian affiliate of the Dominican Order CATHERINE OF SIENA (1347 1380) dedicated her life to Christ at an early age, declaring a lifelong commitment to virginity at age seven. She practiced severe mortifications of the flesh, including long periods of fasting where she ate only sacrament wafers. Most of her writings were in the form of letters, over 300 of which have survived. "
