Katherine D. Moran traces historical celebrations of Catholic missionary histories in the upper Midwest, Southern California, and the US colonial Philippines to demonstrate the improbable centrality of the Catholic missions to ostensibly Protestant imperial endeavors. Moran shows that, as the United States built its continental and global dominion and an empire of production and commerce in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, Protestant and Catholic Americans began to celebrate Catholic imperial pasts. She demonstrates that American Protestants joined their Catholic compatriots in speaking with admiration about historical Catholic missionaries: the Jesuit Jacques Marquette in the Midwest, the Franciscan Junípero Serra in Southern California, and the Spanish friars in the Philippines. Comparing them favorably to the Puritans, Pilgrims, and the American Revolutionary generation, commemorators drew these missionaries into a cross-confessional pantheon of US national and imperial founding fathers. In the process, they cast Catholic missionaries as gentle and effective agents of conquest, uplift, and economic growth, arguing that they could serve as both origins and models for an American civilizing empire. The Imperial Church connects Catholic history and the history of US empire by demonstrating that the religious dimensions of American imperial rhetoric have been as cross-confessional as the imperial nation itself.

The First World War in particular resulted in nearly disastrous losses for the world mission movement. Christian countries were engaged in fratricidal conflict, missionaries were forced to return to their homelands, and traditional sources of mission funding dried up.In response to the missions crisis, American Catholic youth devoted themselves to a program of "prayer, study, and sacrifice"--the Catholic Students' Mission Crusade. Beginning with less than fifty members, the movement grew to over one million youth, and worked to foster support for missionaries in the field, promote missionary vocations, and educate youth about the needs of the church throughout the world. In the course of their "crusade," the movement's youth were exposed the complexities and challenges of diverse religious, political, and cultural worlds, including illiteracy in rural America, communism in China and Eastern Europe, and famine and disease in sub-Saharan Africa. In light of this experience, as well as the Second Vatican Council's reformulation of the Catholic Church's approach to missions, by the late 1960s the movement began to question its goal of converting the world, leading to the Crusade's crisis of faith and eventually to its disbanding.By exploring the fascinating story of the Catholic Students' Mission Crusade, this study offers new insights into the growth of the church amidst contemporary obstacles and historically non-Christian cultures, providing a bridge to understanding the current challenges to Christian globalization.

Book excerpt: In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to be English and Catholic was to face persecution, financial penalties, and sometimes death. Yet some English Catholics prospered, reconciling their faith and loyalty to their country. Among the most prominent was George Calvert, a talented and ambitious man who successfully navigated the politics of court and became secretary of state under King James I. A conforming Protestant from the age of twelve, Calvert converted back to Catholicism when a political crisis forced him to resign his position in 1625. The king rewarded Calvert by naming him Baron of Baltimore in Ireland. Insulated by wealth, with the support of powerful friends, and no longer occupied with court business, Baltimore sought to exploit his land grants in Ireland and Newfoundland. Seeking to increase his own fortune and status while enlarging the king's dominions, he embarked on a series of colonial enterprises that eventually led to Maryland. The experiences of Calvert and his heirs foster our understanding of politics and faith in Jacobean England. They also point to one of the earliest codifications of religious liberty in America, for in founding Maryland, Calvert and his son Cecil envisioned a prosperous society based on freedom of conscience. In English and Catholic, John D. Krugler traces the development of the "Maryland Designe," the novel solution the Calverts devised to resolve the conflict of loyalty they faced as English Catholics. In doing so, Krugler places the founding and early history of Maryland in the context of pervasive anxieties in England over identity, allegiance, and conscience. Explaining the evolution of the Calvert vision, Krugler ties together three main aspects of George Calvert's career: his nationalism and enthusiasm for English imperialism; his aim to find fortune and fame; and his deepening sense of himself as a Catholic. The Dollar and the Vatican is no exception--Avro was not just limited to writings on political topics however, he was also quite the painter, poet, and philosopher who contributed greatly to the advancement of the power of the rational mind. I found it criminal while being a student in University that Avro Manhattan's works are never brought up in political science courses--especially his 1949 classic The Vatican in World Politics which ran through over 15 editions and was published in over 10 languages. This book The Dollar and the Vatican was censored and killed off at the time of its release so we are very fortunate to be able to get it back in print. Like most books that the powers that be don't want the public to read--Avro Manhattan's books in print are very hard to find and are quite expensive--the current cheapest copy of the 1957 edition of The Dollar and the Vatican for sale before this edition was made is $650 and therefore highly un-accessible for the layman. From going to the online CIA reading room library and searching in Avro Manhattan in the search bar we see The Dollar and the Vatican being censored on emotional rather than rational grounds. The Independent in February 1966 reported: "New Republic publisher Gilbert Harrison was personally offended by the title "The Dollar and the Vatican" by Avro Manhattan in an ad. Without seeing the book, he insisted that the title be deleted. When this information was published, he was embarrassed to the point that he barred all future advertising." In Avro's 1967 book Catholic Power Today he writes about the suppression of this book by the national and Catholic press alike, and how many readers who ordered a copy of this book never received it. The information contained in this great book will put fear into the powers that be--if there is one thing that the elite do not want, it is process of the masses beginning to truly educate themselves. Even though The Dollar and the Vatican was written in 1957, it is still as relevant today as it was when it was first published. Like swarming locusts...the Vatican and the high-powered Dollar forces are looking to subjugate all of humanity to their dominion in their plans for enacting a technocratic New World Order. We as humans therefore need to be alert because if this dangerous partnership continues to flourish then the light of liberty and freedom will surely be put out forever.
