Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catholic Ideals in Social Life Several of the papers in this volume - "St Francis and You," "The Working-man's Apostolate," "The Priest and Social Reform" and "The Idea of Responsibility" - have already appeared as pamphlets or as articles in magazines. I have to thank the Editors of the "Catholic World," the "Tablet" and the "Weekly Register" for their kind permission to reprint these articles. Throughout these papers the reader will perceive a unity of thought and purpose. My desire has been to give expression to the Catholic mind touching some of the most urgent questions of the hour in regard to social life and conduct. I have written not for the student or specialist, but for the ordinary intelligent wayfarer whom these questions concern. Book excerpt: This work contains: The Church and Personal Liberty The Christian State The Education of Woman Marriage The Value of Work The Priest and Social Reform. The Responsibility of Wealth The Idea of Responsibility Religious Aspects of Social Work The Working-man's Apostolate: The Catholic Working-man a Misstoner Conditions essential to the Workingman's Apostolate Duties of the Catholic Working-man at the Present Time S, Francis and You: The Franciscan Vocation The Three Radical Evils in Society at the Present Day The Need of Personal Service The Church and Personal Liberty begins: T HE old things have gone and the new are before us. At every moment in our existence, once we have passed the initial stage, is this saying true. Whilst we live we can never rest in what we have achieved, but every step gained is but an indication of further progress. "To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often"; and that is true of all life, intellectual, social and political. In our time the change has been of so radical a character as to Justify us in regarding the period as one of the most momentous in the history of Christian civilization. For several centuries Christendom has been undergoing a process of disintegration. The system built up by patient and heroic toil during the long medireval period has slowly and violently been shivered and broken up. Today but little of it remains; but out of the destruction has sprung a new order of things. We can see now more distinctly than those who were engulfed in the maze of the transition, whither we are tending; and out. of the contradictions and violences of their struggle we perceive a new system emerging, having a shapely form of its own and imperative in its demand upon our allegiance. Call it what you will-democracy or constitutionalism or any name you like-the thing itself is here and will remain, penneating our whole social life. And the more frankly we recognize the fact the better it will be for us. We cannot go back upon the past, but we can, if we are wise, take our part in shaping the future. And this is manifestly the duty of all Catholics according to the measure of their opportunity.

Book excerpt: “People who take God seriously will not remain silent about their faith. They will often disagree about doctrine or policy, but they won’t be quiet. They can’t be. They’ll act on what they believe, sometimes at the cost of their reputations and careers. Obviously the common good demands a respect for other people with different beliefs and a willingness to compromise whenever possible. But for Catholics, the common good can never mean muting themselves in public debate on foundational issues of human dignity. Christian faith is always personal but never private. This is why any notion of tolerance that tries to reduce faith to private idiosyncrasy, or a set of opinions that we can indulge at home but need to be quiet about in public, will always fail.” —From the Introduction Few topics in recent years have ignited as much public debate as the balance between religion and politics. Does religious thought have any place in political discourse? Do religious believers have the right to turn their values into political action? What does it truly mean to have a separation of church and state? The very heart of these important questions is here addressed by one of the leading voices on the topic, Charles J. Chaput, Archbishop of Philadelphia. While American society has ample room for believers and nonbelievers alike, Chaput argues, our public life must be considered within the context of its Christian roots. American democracy does not ask its citizens to put aside their deeply held moral and religious beliefs for the sake of public policy. In fact, it requires exactly the opposite. As the nation’s founders knew very well, people are fallible. The majority of voters, as history has shown again and again, can be uninformed, misinformed, biased, or simply wrong. Thus, to survive, American democracy depends on an engaged citizenry —people of character, including religious believers, fighting for their beliefs in the public square—respectfully but vigorously, and without apology. Anything less is bad citizenship and a form of theft from the nation’s health. Or as the author suggests: Good manners are not an excuse for political cowardice. American Catholics and other persons of goodwill are part of a struggle for our nation’s future, says Charles J. Chaput. Our choices, including our political choices, matter. Catholics need to take an active, vocal, and morally consistent role in public debate. We can’t claim to personally believe in the sanctity of the human person, and then act in our public policies as if we don’t. We can’t separate our private convictions from our public actions without diminishing both. In the words of the author, “How we act works backward on our convictions, making them stronger or smothering them under a snowfall of alibis.” Vivid, provocative, clear, and compelling, Render unto Caesar is a call to American Catholics to serve the highest ideals of their nation by first living their Catholic faith deeply, authentically.

Book We Hold These Truths

Download or read book We Hold These Truths written by John Courtney Murray and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960 publication of We Hold These Truths marked a significant event in the history of modern American thought. Since that time, Sheed & Ward has kept the book in print and has published several studies of John Courtney Murray's life and work. We are proud to present a new edition of this classic text, which features a comprehensive introduction by Peter Lawler that places Murray in the context of Catholic and American history and thought while revealing his relevance today. From the new Introduction by Peter Lawler: The Jesuit John Courtney Murray (1904-67) was, in his time, probably the best known and most widely respected American Catholic writer on the relationship between Catholic philosophy and theology and his country's political life. The highpoint of his influence was the publication of We Hold These Truths in the same year as an election of our country's first Catholic president. Those two events were celebrated by a Time cover story (December 12, 1960) on Murray's work and influence. The story's author, Protestant Douglas Auchincloss, reported that it was "The most relentlessly intellectual cover story I've done." His amazingly wide ranging and dense--if not altogether accurate--account of Murray's thought was crowned with a smart and pointed conclusion: "If anyone can help U.S. Catholics and their non-Catholic countrymen toward the disagreement that precedes understanding--John Courtney Murray can." . . . Murray's work, of course, is treated with great respect and has had considerable influence, but now it's time to begin to think of him as one of America's very few genuine political philosophers. His disarmingly lucid and accessible prose has caused his book to be widely cited and celebrated, but it still is not well understood. It is both praised and blamed for reconciling Catholic faith with the fundamental premises of American political life. It is praised by liberals for paving the way for Vatican II's embrace of the American idea of religious liberty, and it is

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catholic Social Guild Pamphlets: Third Series This first important principle Of Christianity brings us already some way to a conception of its general attitude towards the Woman Question. The Church is con cerned primarily with the soul; now the practical question for every woman (as indeed for every man) is to save her soul, and if she succeeds in doing that, it matters little for lzar as an individual that during life she has been the victim of male tyranny; in fact, the injustice she endured may have made her salvation better worth having and more secure. But, whilst keeping this truth ever in mind, the Christian woman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
