Download or read book The History of the Reformation of the Church of England Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Gilbert Burnet and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Reformation of the Church of England, Vol. 2 The favourable reception which the former part of this work had, together with the new materials that were sent me from noble and worthy hands, have encouraged me to prosecute it, and to carry down the History of the Reformation of this Church till it was brought to a complete settlement in the beginning of queen Elizabeth's reign; which I now offer to the world. The great zeal of this ago for what was done in that, about religion, has made the History of it to be received and read with more than ordinary attention and care: and many have expressed their satisfaction in what was formerly published, by contributing several papers of great consequence to what remained. And since I found no part of the first volume was more universally acceptable, than that wherein I was only a transcriber; I mean the Collection of Records and authentic Papers, which I had set down in confirmation of the more remarkable and doubtful parts of the History; I continue the same method now. I shall repeat nothing here that was in my former preface; but refer the reader to such things as concern this History in general, and my encouragement in the undertaking and prosecution of it, to what is there premised to the whole work: and therefore I shall now enlarge on such things as do more particularly relate to this volume. The papers, that were conveyed to me from several hands, are referred to, as the occasion to mention them occurs in the History, with such acknowledgments as I thought best became this way of writing, though far short of the merits of those who furnished me with them. The King did not know what to make of it. Danby, though inclined to use anything he could for party purposes, hardly credited this amazing revelation. Yet, incredible as it may appear, no means seem to have been used at the outset to sift the matter to the bottom.1 Therefore the tale came to be looked at as credible, and. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Catholic, Revival in the Nineteenth Century, Vol. 2 of 2 The violent clamour at the end of 1850, occasioned by the "Papal Aggression," had been directed as much against the Puseyites as against the Catholics. Lord John Russell, in his famous "Durham Letter," had held them up to Protestant hatred, and in this he had been anticipated by the Bishops, many of whom, nevertheless, were looked upon as having High Church sympathies. On November 2, 1850, Blomfield, Bishop of London, and Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford, renewed the attack on Pusey which they had directed against him after Newman's conversion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of England, Vol. 2: In the Colonies and Foreign Dependencies of the British Empire The publication of this Volume has been delayed by causes which I could neither foresee nor control; and it is only left for me to hope, that, if God so will, the remainder of the work may be completed with greater expedition. It has been found impossible to bring down the history in this Volume beyond the end of William the Third's reign; a period, which falls far short of that which I had once hoped to reach. But a careful survey of the ground which has been here traversed, will show, I trust, that I have not tarried too long by the way. Book The Dawn of the Catholic Revival in England Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Dawn of the Catholic Revival in England Vol 1 of 2 written by Bernard Ward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of the Catholic Revival in England, Vol. 1 of 2: 1781-1803 But the period of nearly a quarter Of a century dealt with in the present volumes may be considered the most important of all, for it was during this time that it may fairly be said that the tide turned; when the gradual shrinkage of the Catholic body which had been proceed ing steadily for over two centuries ceased, and a future began to open out before the Catholics Of England in a manner to which their forefathers had been strangers. This period may therefore be appropriately called the Dawn of that Catholic Revival which has been proceed ing ever since. The number and variety of influences at work, the abolition of the Penal Laws, the influx of the French Refugee Clergy, the return of our Colleges and Convents to English soil, and other influences as well, combine to fill it with instructive historical lessons. It has been endeavoured to present a history of the Eng lish Catholic body in general, together with a detailed account of their development in London and the home counties, - the old London District, as it was called. For obvious reasons no attempt has been made to de scribe the Catholic missions throughout the country. In many cases this has been done by books published locally by the priests of the missions they concern: in at least one instance a whole county has been covered in a single book. The work of the Catholic Record Society has in many cases rendered valuable assistance towards research of this kind, and it is much to be hoped that histories of other missions or districts may continue to be written. He was among the first to leave France, and is called by Plasse1 the Precursor. A short account of his history and antecedents will be our best introduction to his remarkable personality. Count Jean Francois de la Marche was born at Quimper, in Brittany, in 1729. When a youth he was destined by his parents for a military career, and he fought in the War of the Austrian Succession. Being wounded in the battle of Piacenza, like another St. Ignatius, he forthwith determined to resign his commission, and devote himself to the service of the Church. During the twelve years which have intervened, the writer has been so constantly called to the fulfilment of other literary engagements that he has only recently found time for putting into shape the materials which he had long ago collected for this second volume. The delay has, however, enabled him to go on adding to those materials, and he has thus been able to present the work to the reader in a more complete form, and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Church of England, Vol. 2: From the Abolition of the Roman Jurisdiction This book is one of the most valuable additions to our ecclesiastical literature. One of its chief merits is that it deals with incidents trivial in themselves, but sometimes ending in momentous transactions, incidents which have been forgotten or passed over by previous historians. It is a book which must strike the most casual observer as the work of a skilful and thoughtful man. There are records which have never been collected in one volume, or series of volumes; nor hitherto given to the world in so able, so painstaking, and so excellent a manner. We consider that this history is one of the most important and valuable books of the dam - Sou London Gazette, March 9th, 1879.
