Book excerpt: Corrosion of Steel in Concrete: Understanding, Investigation and Repair is a guide for designing, constructing and maintaining reinforced concrete structures, such as buildings and bridges which are subject to reinforcement corrosion. It presents the basics of theory and practice in steel corrosion in concrete and reviews the latest research and developments, such as progress on measuring the corrosion threshold for chloride-induced corrosion. This third edition compares the currently proliferating major national and international standards and guidance documents. New developments are considered, such as hybrid anodes for electrochemical treatment and the latest research and developments in assessment, such as the use of ground penetrating radar to measure the chloride content of the concrete cover. It overhauls coverage of electrochemical repair and rehabilitation techniques and outlines recent innovations in structural repair and construction and investigates their implications for durability. The book is ideal for practitioners and graduate students in structural engineering and concrete technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of Steel in Concrete provides information on corrosion of steel in atmospherically exposed concrete structures and serves as a guide for those designing, constructing and maintaining buildings, bridges and all reinforced concrete structures. This new edition incorporates the new European standards as well as USA and other international standards. It also covers developments in galvanic and impressed current cathodic protection, new electrochemical techniques such as electro-osmosis, and stainless steel clad reinforcing bars. The corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete is a major problem facing civil engineers and surveyors throughout the world today. There will always be a need to build structures in corrosive environments and it is therefore essential to address the problems that result. This is a book to educates about and forms a guide to the problems of corrosion, its causes and how to find solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION 1.1 ELECTROCHEMICAL CORROSION BEHAVIOR OF STEEL REINFORCEMENT AND CATHODIC PROTECTION IN CONCRETE Concrete is a durable construction material. Reinforcing steel is added to concrete to form a stronger and more durable material. Generally concrete because of its high alkalinity (pH = 12.6) gives protection to steel by creating a passive environment. Concrete infrastructures generally undergo deterioration from either lack of concrete durability or from corrosion of reinforcements [1,2]. Nonhomogeneity of the metal surface, effects of applied stress, depassivity, and surface contamination are the factors responsible for the deterioration of reinforcements. Coastal/marine environments with more salts account for extensive damage to concrete bridges, decks, offshore platforms, piers, vessels, and harbor facilities. Such type of failure is found only when critical quantities of corrosive ions particularly chloride ions penetrated to close to reinforcements

Book Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Structures

Download or read book Cathodic Protection for Reinforced Concrete Structures written by Paul M. Chess and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathodic protection of reinforced concrete structures is a technique for rescuing corrosion damaged structures and, in certain instances, preventing them from corroding in the first place, and its use is growing. This book is for specialist contractors, large consultants and owners of corrosion damaged structures, and looks at international experience with this technique. It examines why corrosion is occurring, the differences in the application of CP with the stark dichotomy in its success and failure, and finally ways in which its performance can be improved on future installations. Information is valuable, as the success or failure of the CP system has a marked effect on the service life of the structure.

Book Corrosion of Steel in Concrete

Download or read book Corrosion of Steel in Concrete written by Luca Bertolini and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel-reinforced concrete is used ubiquitously as a building material due to its unique combination of the high compressive strength of concrete and the high tensile strength of steel. Therefore, reinforced concrete is an ideal composite material that is used for a wide range of applications in structural engineering such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, harbor quays, foundations, tanks and pipes. To ensure durability of these structures, however, measures must be taken to prevent, diagnose and, if necessary, repair damage to the material especially due to corrosion of the steel reinforcement. The book examines the different aspects of corrosion of steel in concrete, starting from basic and essential mechanisms of the phenomenon, moving up to practical consequences for designers, contractors and owners both for new and existing reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. It covers general aspects of corrosion and protection of reinforcement, forms of attack in the presence of carbonation and chlorides, problems of hydrogen embrittlement as well as techniques of diagnosis, monitoring and repair. This second edition updates the contents with recent findings on the different topics considered and bibliographic references, with particular attention to recent European standards. This book is a self-contained treatment for civil and construction engineers, material scientists, advanced students and architects concerned with the design and maintenance of reinforced concrete structures. Readers will benefit from the knowledge, tools, and methods needed to understand corrosion in reinforced concrete and how to prevent it or keep it within acceptable limits.
