Book excerpt: Complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) are a major cause of hospital admissions and are associated with significant morbidity and health care costs. Knowledge of baseline risk of urinary tract infection can help clinicians make informed diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. Prevalence rates of UTI vary by age, gender, race, and other predisposing risk factors. In this regard, this book provides comprehensive information on etiology, epidemiology, immunology, pathology, pathogenic mechanisms, symptomatology, investigation and management of urinary tract infection. Chapters cover common problems in urinary tract infection and put emphasis on the importance of making a correct clinical decision and choosing the appropriate therapeutic approach. Topics are organized to address all of the major complicated conditions frequently seen in urinary tract infection. The authors have paid particular attention to urological problems like the outcome of patients with vesicoureteric reflux, the factors affecting renal scarring, obstructive uropathy, voiding dysfunction and catheter associated problems. This book will be indispensable for all professionals involved in the medical care of patients with urinary tract infection.

Book Microbiology of Urinary Tract Infections

Download or read book Microbiology of Urinary Tract Infections written by Payam Behzadi and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generally, in accordance with anatomical characteristics, urinary tract infections (UTIs) and in particular recurrent UTIs occur in women; in contrast, UTIs normally occur in men with different predisposing factors. There are several types of UTIs, including asymptomatic and symptomatic, complicated and uncomplicated, acute and chronic with a diversity of microbial pathogens. In pathogens, virulence factors and genes determine the type and severity of the UTIs. Obviously, UTIs are a huge problem in global public healthcare systems with a wide range of predisposing factors, including gender, microbial agent, the host's immune deficiencies, genetic diseases, catheterization, etc. The recent items determine the microbiology of UTIs. Accurate diagnosis and definitive treatment are the key to UTI reduction.

Book Catheter associated Urinary Tract Infection UTI

Book excerpt: A catheter-associated urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of the urinary tract that occurs during or after a tube was used to drain the bladder, also called a catheter. The presence of a catheter within the urinary tract increases the likelihood of urinary tract infection. Third Age Media, Inc. offers this information as part of its online health encyclopedia.

Book Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection

Download or read book Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection written by Anitha Nair and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the literature reviews, urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common healthcare associated infections (HAI) in the United States. Approximately 2 million patients get infections every year while hospitalized, 80% of the nosocomial UTIs are associated with indwelling catheter insertion (Nazarko, 2008). Urinary catheterization is one of the most common causes of UTI in the hospitalized patients known as catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). Implementing guidelines for the indication of urinary catheterization, daily catheter need assessment and early removal of urinary catheter post operatively will help reduce unnecessary catheterization and reduce or prevent infections. Following these interventions can reduce length of stay, improve patient safety and outcome. Preventing CAUTI has become one of the major focuses of the health care providers, reimbursement sources and accrediting agencies. Research shows significant reduction in CAUTI by early removal of the catheter. Even with best care nursing care possible, the risk for infection range from 3% to 10% (Bernard, Hunter and Moore, 2012).Implementing research-based solutions into clinical practice is important to improve patient safety. In order to get approval from the leadership team, one should able to communicate clearly the need for practice change, how the change will improve patient safety, decreasing health care cost and outcome. It is also important to analyze the cost and staff training which needs to be involved in the process of implementation, evaluation, and the time frame for this change in practice to go into effect.

Download or read book Bacterial Biofilms written by Tony Romeo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the biological world, bacteria thrive predominantly in surface-attached, matrix-enclosed, multicellular communities or biofilms, as opposed to isolated planktonic cells. This choice of lifestyle is not trivial, as it involves major shifts in the use of genetic information and cellular energy, and has profound consequences for bacterial physiology and survival. Growth within a biofilm can thwart immune function and antibiotic therapy and thereby complicate the treatment of infectious diseases, especially chronic and foreign device-associated infections. Modern studies of many important biofilms have advanced well beyond the descriptive stage, and have begun to provide molecular details of the structural, biochemical, and genetic processes that drive biofilm formation and its dispersion. There is much diversity in the details of biofilm development among various species, but there are also commonalities. In most species, environmental and nutritional conditions greatly influence biofilm development. Similar kinds of adhesive molecules often promote biofilm formation in diverse species. Signaling and regulatory processes that drive biofilm development are often conserved, especially among related bacteria. Knowledge of such processes holds great promise for efforts to control biofilm growth and combat biofilm-associated infections. This volume focuses on the biology of biofilms that affect human disease, although it is by no means comprehensive. It opens with chapters that provide the reader with current perspectives on biofilm development, physiology, environmental, and regulatory effects, the role of quorum sensing, and resistance/phenotypic persistence to antimicrobial agents during biofilm growth.

Book Decreasing the Risk of Catheter associated Urinary Tract Infection CAUTI

Download or read book Decreasing the Risk of Catheter associated Urinary Tract Infection CAUTI written by Alma A.M. Treskow and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has proven that patients with an indwelling urinary catheter are at a greater risk for the development of a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs were identified as the most common nosocomial infection at 40%, with 80% of UTIs being associated with the presence of an indwelling urinary catheter. The probability of getting an infection rises with the amount of time the catheter is in place. The most effective way to reduce urinary tract infections is to reduce the incidence of indwelling catheters. Through assuring urinary catheters are clinically indicated and reassessing the need, selecting appropriate products, utilizing aseptic technique on insertion, and maintaining proper catheter hygiene, registered nurses can help make a great impact on reducing the amount of catheter-acquired urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). Through daily assessment, prompt removal of catheters no longer indicated, and nurse-led interventions the incidence of CAUTIs can be greatly reduced, providing safer care to patients, reducing length of hospital stays, and decreasing costs of health care.

Book Infections in Surgery

    Book Details:
  • Author : Massimo Sartelli
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2021-01-29
  • ISBN : 3030621162
  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book Infections in Surgery written by Massimo Sartelli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although most clinicians are aware of the problem of antimicrobial resistance, most also underestimate its significance in their own hospital. The incorrect and inappropriate use of antibiotics and other antimicrobials, as well as poor prevention and poor control of infections, are contributing to the development of such resistance. Appropriate use of antibiotics and compliance with infection prevention and control measures should be integral aspects of good clinical practice and standards of care. However, these activities are often inadequate among clinicians, and there is a considerable gap between the best evidence and actual clinical practice. In hospitals, cultural determinants influence clinical practice, and improving behaviour in terms of infection prevention and antibiotics-prescribing practice remains a challenge. Despite evidence supporting the effectiveness of best practices, many clinicians fail to implement them, and evidence-based processes and practices that are known to optimize both the prevention and the treatment of infections tend to be underused. Addressing precisely this problem, this volume offers an essential toolkit for all surgeons and intensivists interested in improving their clinical practices.

Book Recent Advances in the Field of Urinary Tract Infections

Download or read book Recent Advances in the Field of Urinary Tract Infections written by Thomas Nelius and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urinary tract infections (UTI) continue to be under the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Diagnostic and treatment have substantial financial burden on society. In the USA, UTIs are responsible for more than 7 million physician visits annually and about 15% of all community-prescribed antibiotics in the USA are dispensed for UTIs. About 50% of women will experience at least one UTI episode during lifetime, about 1 million emergency department visits due to UTI in the USA alone, resulting in more than 100 000 hospital admissions annually, most often for pyelonephritis. Moreover, UTIs are also the leading cause of hospital-acquired infections, accounting for approximately 40% of all such cases. The majority of these cases are catheter-associated. Therefore, nosocomial UTIs comprise perhaps the largest institutional reservoir for nosocomial antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Beside the economic impact, UTIs affect also significantly the quality of life of the affected population. The aim of this book is to highlight problematic aspects and recent advances in the field of UTIs. The book is divided in three parts.

Book Professional Research Project

Download or read book Professional Research Project written by Mabel Osaghae and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urinary Tract Infection is the most common type of infection associated with patients in an acute care facility (CDC, 2009). According to the Center for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) significant percentages of infections are associated with urinary catheter about 75% in total. Approximate about 15% -20% of patients in an acute setting will receive a urinary catheter. Long term use of urinary catheter will greatly increase the rate of catheter Associated urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI). The aim of this study is to determine how effective nursing assessment on appropriateness of catheter use can help in eliminating and or reducing the incidence of CAUTI thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing cost of care. This project looks at the population of those in the acute care settings with indwelling catheters. Intervention to address problems will be nurses assessing for the appropriateness of use of catheters.
