Book A History of the Diocese of Charleston

Download or read book A History of the Diocese of Charleston written by Pamela Smith - SSCM PhD and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1820, the Catholic Diocese of Charleston was established, and Bishop John England arrived from Ireland. His new diocese encompassed North and South Carolina, Georgia and, for a time, Haiti. From 1859 to 1885, when Patrick Lynch and Henry Northrop were bishops of Charleston, the diocese included the Bahama Islands. However, the history of Catholics in the diocese--which now covers all of South Carolina--began much earlier. The arrival of Spanish settlers and missionary priests dated back more than 150 years before there was a diocese on American soil. Sister Pam Smith charts the history of the diocese from the first words of prayer uttered on Santa Elena in the sixteenth century through the interfaith singing of a reformed slaveholder's hymn at a painful funeral in the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "First published in 1979, Wrestlin' Jacob offers insights into the intersection of black and white religious history in the South. Erskine Clarke provides two arenas - one urban and one rural - that show what happened when white ministers tried to bring black slaves into the fold of Christianity. Clarke illustrates how the good intentions - and vain illusions - of the white preachers, coupled with the degradation and cultural strength of the slaves, played a significant role in the development of black churches in the South. The author's new introduction discusses the growth of interest in Southern religious history and reviews the scholarly developments in the field since the book's original publication."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the ways a particular religious tradition and a distinct social context have interacted over a 300-year period, including the unique story of the oldest and largest African American Calvinist community in America The South Carolina low country has long been regarded—not only in popular imagination and paperback novels but also by respected scholars—as a region dominated by what earlier historians called “a cavalier spirit” and by what later historians have simply described as “a wholehearted devotion to amusement and the neglect of religion and intellectual pursuits.” Such images of the low country have been powerful interpreters of the region because they have had some foundation in social and cultural realities. It is a thesis of this study, however, that there has been a strong Calvinist community in the Carolina low country since its establishment as a British colony and that this community (including in its membership both whites and after the 1740s significant numbers of African Americans) contradicts many of the images of the "received version" of the region. Rather than a devotion to amusement and a neglect of religion and intellectual interests, this community has been marked throughout most of its history by its disciplined religious life, its intellectual pursuits, and its work ethic.

Book The Scorpion and the Frog a Natural Conspiracy

Download or read book The Scorpion and the Frog a Natural Conspiracy written by William A. Borst and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004-11-22 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To deny that conspiracies exist is to deny history. While there are several chapters on traditional conspirators, from the Masons through the Bilderbergers, the book unveils the ideas that have unified conspiracies into a coherent rendition of evil. This book is an intellectual history of the City of God versus the City of Man, in the ultimate culture war. It does not take a cadre of men in some secret room to effect a unified conspiracy. Like the scorpion in the fable, their ideas become second nature to liberals, socialists, or communists and they act in accordance with their nature.
