Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales Of all our great ecclesiastical edifices there is none, with the exception of Westminster Abbey, that is more linked with the events Of English history than the cathedral of Canterbury. It is not merely that it is one of our chief works of art, and Of which we may be justly proud, but it has been the scene of important episodes, and it stands as a memorial of one of the most momentous of them in our annals. For many generations it was regarded as hallowed, and when we consider how opinions change, it might be possible for it to be regarded SO again. Download or read book The Cathedrals of England and Wales written by Francis Bond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales: Being a Fourth Edition of English Cathedrals Illustrated The book has been re-illustrated in a much more comprehensive manner, only a few examples of detail being retained from the earlier editions. The exception of the ground plans, the illustrations are from photographs, the sources of which are given in the note of acknowledgment. The more important features of each cathedral are represented, and it is hoped that this will tend materially to elucidate and increase the interest of the text: neither the text, however, nor the illustrations are intended as a sub stitute for personal study of the cathedrals on the spot, which it is the purpose of the book to foster and facilitate. Book The Cathedrals of Great Britain

Download or read book The Cathedrals of Great Britain written by P. H. Ditchfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of Great Britain: Their History and Architecture In this volume I have attempted to give an architectural description of all the cathedral churches of England, Wales, and Scotland, together with a brief history of each see. In order to include any adequate account of each church and bishopric in one volume of portable size, which may be of use to visitors in their travels, much compression has been necessary, but it is hoped that nothing of importance has been omitted which might be useful to those who would read aright the architectural history of our great churches. On account of their immense importance in the history of Gothic art, it has been thought well to include in this volume some account of the churches of Westminster and Beverley. At the close of each history of a cathedral will be found a record of the principal building dates and dimensions, and also a brief account of the chief places and churches of interest in the city or neighbourhood which it is advisable to visit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedrals, Abbeys and Churches of England and Wales, Vol. 1: Descriptive, Historical, Pictorial The differences also in plan are considerable; these are less conspicuous in the older cathedrals, though even there a distinction may often be noticed. In those of Norman date in England the dominant ground-plan is almost always a Latin cross with well-developed arms. There is no trace whatever of the basilica type, though possibly this may once have been visible in the churches of earlier date in this country, as it is certainly more permanently impressed on those of France. But when we come to the cathedrals built in the Pointed styles, the difference is even more persistently marked. Contrast, for example, the ground plans of the Cathedrals of Paris, Amiens, Rheims, or Chartres with English buildings. All of these, even the last, cover spaces of ground large in proportion to their length; their area being in the case of Notre Dame (the smallest), feet, and of Amiens (the largest), feet. Salisbury, which is rather longer than Notre Dame, covers less ground by full feet; and York, which is quite fifty feet longer than Amiens, and is one of the most spacious of our cathedrals, occupies an area but slightly greater. Book The Cathedral Churches of England and Wales Vol 8

Download or read book The Cathedral Churches of England and Wales Vol 8 written by Thomas George Bonney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral Churches of England and Wales, Vol. 8: Descriptive, Historical, Pictorial The chief architectural distinctions will be presently noticed. There is, how ever, another which should not be entirely forgotten - the distinction of site. The French cathedrals, as a rule, stand in the heart of the towns; they are hemmed in with houses, which in many cases actually rested against, and were encrusted upon their walls, an encroachment which seems to have been per mitted from a very early period. Thus, as it has been often remarked, not withstanding all that has been done of late years to clear away these encumbrances, it is extremely difficult to Obtain any good general view of the exterior, and it is only when at a distance from the town we see the huge mass of sculptured stone rising high above the subordinated roofs that we can fully appreciate its grand preportions and its vast dimensions. English cathedrals, on the contrary, are generally surrounded by ample Open Spaces; this may be in part due to the fact that they were almost invariably connected with some great monastery, that they were not only the mother churches of a diocese, but also what we might call college chapels, as is still the case with the Cathedral of Christ Church at Oxford. This connection appears much more rare in France except it be for an episcopa palace, one treads, on quitting the door of a French cathedral, upon the pavements of the streets, and passes abruptly from the peace within to the turmoil of the city. In this there may be a gain as well as a loss; perhaps we may have in it some ground for the mutual insulation, once very marked, of the cathedral and the townsfolk. But whether or not because they so commonly were incorporated into the spacious precincts of an important monastic foundation, the fact remains that the English cathedrals stand in spaces far more open than is usual in France, and frequently occupy sites remarkably beautiful. The differences also in plan are considerable; these are less conspicuous in the older cathedrals, though even there a distinction may often be noticed. In those of Norman date in England the dominant ground - plan is almost always a Latin cross with well-developed arms. There is no trace whatever of the basilica type, though possibly this may once have been visible in the churches of earlier date in this country, as it is certainly more permanently impressed on those of France. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedrals, Abbeys and Churches of England and Wales, Vol. 2: Descriptive, Historical, Pictorial The situation of the church is hardly less fine. The town is built upon a hill, of which the castle occupies one edge. From it the ground shelves upwards, to form a broad and moderately level plateau; and on the highest part of this a church was built, which has for centuries been the mother-church of the town. Thus, from far and wide, from windings of the valley, from many an undulation of the neighbouring district, its lofty tower forms a conspicuous landmark, indi cating the position of the county town, and calling up memories of a family whose power at one time was little less than regal. Download or read book The Cathedrals of England and Wales Vol 1 of 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales, Vol. 1 of 2: Their History, Architecture, and Associations; With a Series of Rembrandt Plates and Many Illustrations in the d104 No apology need be offered for yet another work upon those monuments of "petrified piety" which among material things arc the chief glory of our land. The great age of architecture, indeed, is past, never probably to return; but none the less is it true that never were our cathedral churches so prized and treasured as they are now. In this respect the present generation need fear comparison with none of those that had their little day when architecture was a living organism. The Early English builders felt no compunction in making away with the Norman work of their predecessors, and although, out of deference to some great master-builder whose influence survived his death, an unfinished scheme was occasionally continued in accordance with the original conception, the same indifference to earlier work which characterised the creators of the first Pointed style was betrayed by those who built in the later styles, and most of all by the Perpendicular builders. That this should be so was inevitable. While the Gothic was passing through its predestined phases it was not to be expected that men would properly appreciate work which they looked upon, rightly or wrongly, as but rudimentary. Theirs was the joy of creation; and the sense of antiquity which is now so sedulously cultivated only became possible when the period of evolution was succeeded by an era of comparison and imitation. Yet we of these later days may easily plume ourselves over much upon our reverence for the work of past ages. Admirable as are the pious zeal and liberality that have made possible the restorations recorded in the following pages, who can maintain, on a survey of church restoration as a whole, that it has not been carried too far? In many instances the architect has indulged in reconstruction when reparation would have sufficed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales, Their History, Architecture and Associations, Vol. 2 of 2: With a Series of Rembrandt Plates and Many Illustrations in the Text The documentary history of Lichfield Cathedral is unusually imper fect, and the date of the building of the first church on the Site can only be determined approximately. But from the Venerable Bede we learn that St. Chad's remains were translated from the mother church at Stowe to the new church of St. Peter, the first of the three cathedrals to be reared on the present site. This church of St. Peter must there fore have been in existence some time before the year 735, when Bede died. It was no doubt a comparatively small and humble structure. After the Conquest this work of English hands was replaced by a Norman church on a grander scale, but here again the exact date of the re building is uncertain. This church also, with the exception of a few fragments, has vanished. It was gradually rebuilt, after it had stood for rather more than a century, the western part of the choir, the oldest portion of the present cathedral, being probably begun about the year 1200. The south transept was next taken in hand, followed some few years later by the north transept; for one at least of these is known, from an old grant giving a right of quarrying stone, to have been in progress about the year 1235. Next the nave was rebuilt, the work being begun about the middle of the same century; and the west front, which does not appear to have been constructed quite continuously with the rest, is dated about 1275. The architects now again took in hand the eastern part of the choir. The work executed at the beginning of the century was destroyed, and the present presbytery and Lady Chapel were erected, the latter being the earlier, and the work being completed about the year 1325. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales, Vol. 2 of 2: 120 Photographs, With Short Notes; Southern Section St. Albans - This cathedral was built by the Normans, with Roman tiles originally in the walls of Verulamium. The nave is in three styles, viz., Norman, Early English, and Decorated, and on some of the Norman work there are paintings of probably the same date. In the triforium of the south transept may be seen some Saxon balusters taken from the second church on the site. The reredos is fine, resembling the one at Winchester. Chichester. - Oi late years the building has been much restored, but contains some good Norman work which exhibits much of the cable moulding. The nave, like Manchester, has five aisles formed by the addition of side chapels. The Bell Tower or Campanile is the only instance in England of the tower being separated from the cathedral.
