Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedral and University Sermons Enter not into judgment with Thy servant, for in Thy sight shall no man living be justified. For He cometh, for He cometh to judge the earth and with righteousness to judge the world, and the people with His truth. The Lord, even the most mighty God, hath spoken; and called the world from the rising up Of the sun, unto the going down thereof. Out Of Sion hath God appeared in perfect beauty. Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence; there shall go before Him a consuming fire, and a mighty tempest shall be stirred up round about Him. He shall call the heaven from above, and the earth, that He may judge His people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of Consolation: University and Cathedral Sermons To this object I am sure he contributed very materially, and this volume may be a welcome solace to many perplexed as well as sorrowing hearts. It would be out of place for me to say much of him in other capacities. But I cannot but add that in all the duties of a member of a Cathedral Chapter, he was an admirable colleague, and that as a companion and friend he was warmly beloved. He had to endure much suffering of late, and we are thankful, amidst our deep regrets, that he rests in peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons for the Christian Year The sermons included in this volume have mostly been preached in Cathedral Churches. One is a University Sermon, but the rest have no academic character. I have tried first to select sermons which contain either thoughts, or ways of expressing thoughts, that may not be familiar and, secondly, to avoid subjects with which I have dealt in earlier books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University and Other Sermons The sermons of Dr. Creighton that remain in' a condition fit for publication can at best only give an imperfect idea of the nature of his preaching. As a rule he preached extempore, and reports of his sermons were only taken on occasions of public importance, and even then were naturally printed in a condensed form. Of the sermons which contained his regular teaching, delivered in his Northumbrian parish or in Worcester Cathedral, no record remains save his own very scanty notes. Book Sermons on the Church Preached Before the University of Oxford Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons on the Church Preached Before the University of Oxford Classic Reprint written by Edward Hawkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Church, Preached Before the University of Oxford The danger had commenced in 1833 with the adoption and eager propagation, by a few individuals, of "Church principles," so called, much too closely allied to the system of Rome; and gradually advancing to the palliation of Romish errors, and their ultimate approval, the result appeared in 1845, in the open defection of many members of the Church of England from the pure truth of the Gospel. But so early as 1841, the growing uneasiness in several minds at the inconsistency between their acquired principles and those of the Church to which they had subscribed, seems to have led to a notable attempt to retain them within her communion, or even in her ministry, by reconciling Roman tenets with subscription to the Articles of the English Church. For a while even ingenuous minds were deceived by a specious theory; and the integrity of Subscription was sensibly impaired. Happily the mists are rolling away, although the horizon is not yet clear. This slight reference to the controversies of the day will account for expressions in these Sermons which might otherwise, perhaps, be obscure. Book Twelve Cambridge Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book Twelve Cambridge Sermons Classic Reprint written by John E. B. Mayor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Cambridge Sermons IT was Professor Mayor's usual practice, after preaching in his College Chapel or the 'university Church, to print the sermon, with abundant annotations, and distribute copies among his friends: Twelve of these sermons are here reprinted, just as he issued theml, with all the notes and all the quotations. Neither could be spared. If the notes are an embellishment, the quotations are of the very tissue of the work. Mayor delivered the utterance of other men with much more emphasis and expression than he could bring himself to put into his own, and even when he used the same passage a second time, there was always something in the setting that gave it distinction. The business of the editor has merely been to select and see through the Press such discourses as exhibit in clearest light the preacher's mind at different stages in his long ministry. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Sermons Preached in St. Paul's Cathedral, and Before the University of Oxford Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh. - 1 Timothy iii, 16. At length, my brethren, the Advent season has reached its close, and we are at Christmas eve. The period of expectation is over, and we are almost entering upon the early hours of that great and blessed festival on which the Christian Church keeps the birthday of her Founder; the day upon which He whom Christendom names the Saviour of the world was born of a human mother and entered this world to take His place among the things and scenes of Time. The Apostle's words to Timothy put before us forcibly and concisely the great master-truth which gives Christmas its meaning Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh. It is not the birthday Of a mere Sage and Philanthropist, which we celebrate to-morrow. That might be in itself reasonable and natural enough; but Christmas means much more than that. Christmas means the entrance into the human world of One who was at once its Architect and its Judge, under conditions which made Him the peer Of the poorest and youngest amongst us. It is the introduction of a new principle of life - into humanity which we thus commemorate. It is in fact nothing less than a new starting point in the world's history. It is the opening of a new fountain of salvation for man, unknown to him before. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in the Spirit and Truth of Christianity

Download or read book Studies in the Spirit and Truth of Christianity written by William Temple and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Spirit and Truth of Christianity: Being University and School Sermons AT the end of my first two years at Repton various friends urged me to publish a volume of Repton School Sermons. It then seemed better, if I was to publish at all, that I should publish the whole series as I had preached them. In this volume I have not followed that course, but have selected some that, in a small degree at least, find completion in one another and so give to the collection an element of unity. The volume consists of three University sermons, one sermon preached in Manchester Cathedral, which belongs to the same type, and a selection from my school sermons between September, 1912, and July, 1914. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunday Afternoons at the Parish Church of an University City A voice, often heard in our church, was that of John Knox, the greatest and most energetic of Scotch R'eformers. It is said, on doubtful authority, that from listening toa sermon he preached in it, a multitude hastened over the short Space between and wrecked the cathedral. Probably what Knox wished was that the grand building should be cleared of images and other things of specially Roman cha racter: but when you set in motion a furious mob. Book The Church and the Saints Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Church and the Saints Sermons Classic Reprint written by Wentworth Beaumont Hankey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Saints Sermons The sermons contained in this volume are the sermons of one whose life was passed in the constant contemplation of the invisible. His relation to God and to the objects of faith was a greater and more constraining reality to him than his relation to that visible world in which for the moment he lived. He seemed instinctively to see what to others is so often a matter of dim and uncertain perception, with the result that his teaching exhibits in a very remarkable degree that simplicity and directness and that clear intuition of the things of God which is so marked a feature of Mr. Keble's Parochial Sermons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Sermons: Preached Before the University But in every Church and in every age the Party of Growth has to contend with two other parties, the Party of Destruction, who would destroy every thing, and the Conservative Party, who would pre serve everything as it is; and these two Parties will always make themselves more easily intelli gible than the first - the Party of Progressive Truth. To retain everything exactly as it is, or to destroy everything root and branch - either of these has the merit of being a plain policy, appreciable by the laziest of minds in the laziest of humours; and this in itself is no small commendation in a busy age which finds desul tory reading far more attractive than thought or study. The policy of the Party of Growth, necessarily involving partial destruction and par tial conservation, obliges them to give reasons for destroying some things and preserving others, and to justify their discrimination. But to dis criminate, how tedious! And to justify discrimi nation, how dull for the reader of the justification Not half so amusing, after dinner, as a slashing demonstration in some magazine (which everybody will read and talk about) that everything is naught, nor half so intelligible as next month's rejoinder, set off with epigrams, that whatever is, is good! Book Fresh Views of Old Truths

Download or read book Fresh Views of Old Truths written by Hugh Allan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fresh Views of Old Truths: Church Sermons T is undeniable that there is often a wearisome sameness about Sermons which has afforded sad occasion for the contempt only too readily expressed for them by an irreligious world. The Author hopes and believes that he has at the least avoided this fault. The repelling element of constantly recurring religious common-places, and the stock phrases which are meant to cover, but never really conceal from the intelligent, poverty or confusion of thought, will not be found in these Sermons. Very early in the days of the world they became a just cause of complaint. Even by the godly Job they were found intolerable: and he signified his impatience of them in the plainest language. How forcible (says be) are right words. But what doth your arguing reprove? I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all! Shall vain words have an end? I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. But I would strengthen you with my mouth. The conventional terms too, so appropriate to systematic theology, are but very sparingly introduced; the Author considering them out of place in Parochial Sermons, as inconsistent with the simplicity of the Gospel, and irrelevant to the plain teachings that the Preacher should be setting himself to gather in a practical form from the passage before him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Sermons: Preached Before the University of Oxford Whether therefore ye eat, or drank, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Christianity, like every other system, has its own end and object; and this end and object is identical with that for which the universe was formed - the promotion of the glory of God. For this the Father created the world, for this the Son redeemed the world, for this the Holy Ghost still abideth with the Church to sanctify its members. Such is the unity of design which pervades the works of nature and the words of reve lation, a unity of design which we should expect, a priori, when we remember that both proceed from the same divine source, the one and only God. And this, too, be comes the aim, the object, the design of every man, who, renewed and sanctified by the eternal Spirit, is a partaker of the divine nature - his ultimate end, his peculiar work.
