Book excerpt: Channel Catfish are widely distributed across North America and highly valued as a sport fish and for food. While most Channel Catfish fisheries are managed under liberal harvest regulations, the Red River of the North (Red River) in Manitoba, Canada is managed with restrictive harvest regulations to promote a trophy fishery. Two barriers (dams) are present on the main stem of the Red River and may fragment the population to some degree. My objectives were to: 1) analyze population dynamics of the trophy Channel Catfish population on the lower Red River, 2) compare population characteristics of Channel Catfish in selected reaches throughout the Red River in Manitoba, and 3) determine movement characteristics of Channel Catfish and the permeability of a dam on the lower Red River. We compared our results to the most recent studies on Channel Catfish in the Red River, and also to range-wide age, growth, and mortality statistics. Channel Catfish in the lower Red River commonly reached ages > 20, grew slowly, and had a low mortality rate. Trophy Channel Catfish were most abundant below the dam on the lower river. The size structure within the most upstream reaches we studied were predominantly comprised of small- and intermediate-sized Channel Catfish. We determined the dam is passable by large Channel Catfish (>600 mm), but may be an impediment to small Channel Catfish. My mark-recapture data indicated Channel Catfish can move long distances, where upstream movements > 500 kilometers were common for large Channel Catfish. This research provides insight into the age, growth, and mortality of a trophy fishery for Channel Catfish. We believe restrictive harvest regulations are adequately maintaining the desired age structure and size structure of Channel Catfish in the lower Red River and by consequence, sustaining one of the premier fisheries in North America.

Book excerpt: The popularity of catfish Ictaluridae nationally as a sport fish is well documented and angling for catfish on the Missouri River in Nebraska (NMR) is especially popular. Catfish monitoring program by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) began in 1974 and several short-term evaluations of Channel Catfish population dynamics have been performed. However, no long term analyses of population characteristics have been conducted since the early 1990s. The focus of this research was to summarize the status of Channel Catfish populations in the NMR and give recommendations for future management. I summarized population characteristics, modeled length limit regulations, and assessed the feasibility of a survey design aimed at gathering effort and catch data from setline anglers. Population characteristics varied among the four reaches studied. Channel Catfish in the upper unchannelized reach had relatively low mortality, moderate population densities and a long life span. The lower unchannelized reach had a population of small, slow growing Channel Catfish with high mortality rates. Population characteristics in the upper channelized reach were similar to those of the lower unchannelized reach except relative abundance was greater. The lower channelized reach had the highest mortality and the fastest growing, shortest lived fish in the study. Modeling revealed all reaches except the lower unchannelized reach could benefit from a 380-mm minimum length limit. In all cases, mean total length, mean weight, and yield would increase with a minimum length limit. A maximum length limit would likely not be effective for growing trophy sized fish in the upper unchannelized reach. Setlining is an unknown aspect of the Missouri River catfish fishery, and methods described in this study appear to be a feasible alternative to traditional creel surveys for estimating setline effort and catch.

Book excerpt: Understanding the trophic dynamics of large, riverine ecosystems is complex and requires knowledge from several inputs and outputs of the ecosystem. Most riverine ecosystems have been altered in some way whether through damming, channelizing, or diverting water. The Missouri River is not immune to these anthropogenic alterations. The river has dams throughout its middle portion and is channelized from Sioux City, Iowa to its confluence with the Mississippi River. Flathead Catfish pylodictus olivarius are one of the most ecologically harmful introduced species but little research has looked at the influence native populations of Flathead Catfish have on native prey populations where river modification has occurred. I collected Flathead Catfish diet samples and analyzed potential and realized prey caloric content to answer questions on how this abundant, apex predator influences prey populations within their native range. Flathead Catfish had similar diets among three distinct seasons (spring, summer, fall), selected for three fish species (Common Carp, Flathead Catfish, and Shovelnose Sturgeon) and two macroinvertebrate taxa (Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera), and consumed prey resources in similar quantities to introduced populations. The caloric values for prey items varied but selected species did not have highest nor lowest values. Using our diet indices and consumption rates, I estimated that Flathead Catfish consumed on average 175.3 ± 2.1 kcals (dry weight) per individual per day, equivalent to around 220.9 kg of biomass consumed by the entire sample population daily. This research will help researchers better understand the trophic dynamics within the Missouri River ecosystem.
